Basically there are 3 possible outcomes with not fair catching it on the 5.

1) Perfect bounce and the kicking team downs it between the 1 & 5.
2) Punt hits and the receiving team gets a favorable bounce and the ball ends up in better field position.
3) Ball takes a hard bounce and goes into the end zone for a touchback.

2 of those are positive outcomes for the receiving team. Where the defenders are on the field should never be consideration ever.
