I'm not convinced we were about to make some great hire because AU has kind of conditioned me in that way, so I felt like the staff continuity and giving SP a chance made as much sense as cobbling together some search that could run the gamut from a Porter Moser to a Chris Jans to a Bucky Mcmillan type hire.
That's just my two cents from behind my bludgeoned O&B glasses

Relying on staff continuity was the only selling point but at this point burgo no longer looks like some genius play caller, Prewett is already gone, Ira isnt doing that great at recruiting, and Marquis is only tracking information. I question just how valuable our staff is.'

Damn the 3 point defense. If you want mediocrity just keep parroting the above. The fans will never travel again.

This is stolen from another board but this is proof that in the real world some coaches can actually have a resume beyond being coach's kid. Having a strong resume doesnt assume D1 success but it should still be a necessary qualification before heading to our gatekeeper.
1.) Jerrod Calhoun
-pretty young at 44
-Bob Huggins disciple, assistant coach for 5 years
-HC 5 years at Fairmont State, 7 years at Youngstown St, 2nd year at Utah St
-48-11 record, Horizon coach of the year 2023, MEC regular season champion 2017, Horizon regular season champion 2023.
-about to win MWC conference title, consistent top 20 offense, really good system with not a lotta talent
2.) Eric Olen
-from mobile, AL
-was HC at UC San Diego for 12 years. just became head coach at UNM
-had one of the best defenses last year and carried it over to UNM within a year transition period
-probably will be my favorite candidate to take over the next couple of years. just has a team that always fights hard and follows the system. will be an extremely tough out in the tournament this year- keep an eye on them
-got an unranked freshman Jake Hall playing like one of the best wings in the entire MWC
3.) Josh Schertz
-hes a D2 coach background like bruce, mostly through high point before they went up to d1 and also queens
-3 years at Indiana St and 2 years at Saint Louis
-this will probably be his first year ever making the NCAA tournament, still early in his career as a d1 coach so more risky
-he always has unique players that stand out ie Robert Avila. also always has young fr/soph that turn into good players.
-another team that will be extremely fun to watch in the

What makes this year worse is the entire conference is down and we're still struggling to stay above water. What happens when the conference rebounds next year but our roster is likely less talented? Idk but it looks like we are about to find out. It's frustrating but other than Bruce idk who to realistically blame. It's not Cohen's fault and it's not Steven's but they're the ones calling the shots so it's up to them to fix it

quote:You are ramblimg about as if we hadn't already hired SP. Yes, we could have made another hire. However that discounted ship has sailed because the replacement $$$ after firing a one year coach goes up dramatically. If you're wanting that proven low risk head coach.

You can't seriously think Auburn is going to spend that sort of dollars?

And where did comes from: "some here pretending we need Bruce to be right about his son"?
I've missed that sentiment....but could be wrong.

Definitely not the first time you have been wrong.
Anybody begging us to give Steven a chance is out of their mind right now.

Not as crazy as firing SP this year.
edit: and the begging is you wanting him fired
That's not even realistic.

What did Virginia do when their great coach abruptly left and how are they doing now?

Yes it is. That obligation should have never been there.

A final 4 program being nepotistic is unrealistic for any serious basketball program.

I think you are kinda making a reach thinking anyone is following Virginia enough to know. To help everyone out, Jang is referring to Virginia hiring an assistant coach after Bennett retired, the assistant sucked as head coach for one year, then they fired that guy after one year and hired VCU's head coach, who has them back kicking butt at 25-3 right now.
His point being that it certainly has been done, and quite recently. There is obviously zero shot Steven is let go after this season due to the family connection, but after next season he should be fair game based on his performance in year two.
