To be fair this is how you beat a zone you attack it. We did some things to get Heron in position in the paint which I liked. I'll never defend Pearl for having a great executing team. I'll be the first to say he lacks this on offense and defense. I doubt we'll ever play good defense / sound offense with Pearl but like he says hopefully our 10 can beat your 5.

Just read up on Bruce Pearl's Modified Flex offense which seems to match what I remember us running. MCT can correct me but it seems like Purifoy is the one out of position a ton (which matches him constantly looking frustrated)

Also, it is completely based on beating man defense. Not super helpful vs the zone

I don't know the in's and out's of the flex well enough to say. I know the philosophy behind it is to spread the other team out and create driving lanes.

Teams can look a little ugly during the OOC portion of the schedule. There is very minimal game planning or scouting involved and you rarely see set plays. I counted 3 last night. It's a time most work on the basics and run almost exclusively their base offense/defense.

ETA this quote from Mark Murphy:

I think we could see Austin Wiley join the Auburn team in December. It is not 100 percent, but in my opinion it is going to happen

Writeup on the basics of Bruce Pearl's modified flex offense. Interesting read

Pretty easy to recognize a ton of those basic concepts in Auburn's offense

Based on the above, it looks like our offense is at its best if we score in the first 15 seconds of the shot clock, not the last.

Interesting read man, thanks for finding it.

That definitely explains the lack of offensive sets. Hopefully as our young players become more comfortable/experienced with each other we'll see an uptick in offensive efficiency.

MCT's point about not really gameplanning makes sense too. It will be interesting to see how we look by the end of OOC play compared to these first 3 games.

I don't mind not having set plays and letting it flow, but our players look a little lost and it struggles vs the zone. Even when we run things well, our players don't seem confident on shot selection, often skipping decent shots to continue running the O

Take a look at diagram 6, I've seen us run something similar a few times and got quality open looks. Granted, Bryce Brown bricked some of the looks but still. Heron isolated in the post with Purifoy/Brown/Lang as 3pt options if they double him is pretty awesome

The offense is just a vehicle. There's opportunities for him to drive and take open shots. It's up to the player to find them.

Any offense can work against a zone. Just play more spread out with quicker ball movement.

Wouldn't any offense have a higher percentage in the first half of the shot clock?

I meant it as the offense excels in transition not as well out of the half court

Purdue beat Ga State by 64-56. Ga State was up 12 with 6:30 left before Purdue went on a 20-0 run to close out the game.

I'd say Dayton and Temple are the big names.

Dayton definitely the biggest name and Temple has been great since Fran Dunphy took over.

Thats a pretty strong field and it'd be big to get a win over either of those 2.

Purdue needed a 20-0 run to put away Ga State last night. PU trailed with about 3 minutes to go. I know it's pointless to compare scores, but interesting none the less.

Purdue has a center from the Gadsden area... Isaac Haas. He's a solid player.
