I can relate to this in a very real way.

I bet several of us thought the same thing reading that

I am saying all of this as a guy who wanted Freeze before he was hired...
If we are serious about competing next year, then our portal recruiting needs to pop off over the next 2 weeks. So far it has been meh. I like the guys we have gotten, but I think we need at least 10 impact players if we want to do more than be a scrappy team. I was very down on Harsin when he let certain positions go unaddressed or poorly addressed in the portal. But if I'm being fair, Harsin did more in the portal than Freeze has done so far.
We need at least 3 more offensive linemen. A center, a guard, another tackle, and then some quality depth. Our staff has been super active in this area and I have no complaints about the energy I see here. However, the Tulsa kid was a layup so we will see how it goes for transfers with no Auburn connection.
We need a game changing linebacker. Some will say we need 2. The guys mentioned so far feel like Koy Moore level transfers. I'm fine taking them, but they don't move the needle much.
We need a proven wide receiver. I don't trust anyone currently in the wide receiver room to step up. RaRa was exactly what I was looking for. Are we going to take a cast off with potential, or are we going steal a P5's best pass catcher?
We need a QB... this has been discussed to death. Counting on Robby is foolish. If he ends up being the guy, fine, but make him beat out someone really good.
We probably need defensive linemen. I'm fine with rotational pieces, but once again, if we are serious about winning we should grab two sure fire starters from somebody. Nobody currently on our line strikes fear into any opponent.
I don't have an opinion about safety. Sounds like we are looking at someone from Baylor (another layup).
We might need an RB, but this feels like the one position group we have recruited well. Still, if Hunter gets hurt the bottom could fall out of our running game.
As some have mentioned before, we have to overpay. The money guys got their coach, so now it's time to brute force our team back to relevancy with cold hard cash. I can't think of a single position group on this team that is a known quantity going into next season. We will be picked near the bottom of the league, and rightly so. When journalists look through returning starts and production, we are going to look dismal. Killing in the portal is our only hope for relevancy. We don't just need depth, we need starters.

Not sure I’d call Wade a layup. We beat out USC who had his former position coach.
The reason you aren’t blown away by the names you are hearing is because there haven’t been that many big names enter except for a couple QBs.
Reminder to everyone that the vast majority of people who we will be after in the portal are guys from small schools who were successful (like Wade) and then guys at big schools who either weren’t producing or weren’t getting the PT they wanted. There will be a handful of guys like Caleb Williams and Jordan Addison, but those are going to be few and far between and will likely be just about NIL. Hopefully we will be able to compete for those guys whenever they pop up.

Baylor transfer OG Micah Mazzccua is in Auburn today. This one would be big! Kid started ~10 games this past season and has several years of eligibility. Massive guy with plus athleticism and powerful run blocking.

I agree with some of this, we have gotten some solid pieces in the portal so far, but unfortunately have not hit on any of the big name guys we were in the running for. Ra Ra Thomas, Dillon Johnson, the Rhode Island tackle, and Grayson McCall, were all portal guys we were after that didn't pan out for one reason or another. Landing a few of those guys would have been huge.
As for the receivers, I think adding one big time receiver would be huge, but I don't think the receivers are as bad as they may have looked. Brown and Johnson I think are more than capable of being a solid 1-2 punch in the SEC in the right offense. More than anything the receivers struggled from poor scheme, and lacked a QB to deliver them the ball. I think we have fixed the first issue, but Freeze and Montgomery are going to have their work cut out for them to turn Robby into a consistent SEC QB.
I think we need to find a QB and some LB', and then fill in some more depth pieces on the OL and DL. RB and secondary are the current strengths of this team.

Would be great
Former 4* LB DeMario Tolan entered the portal from LSU. AU was a major contender in his recruitment last year

The thoughts of fixing an already mediocre roster of ~45 open spots with a first year recruiting class and the current transfer portal have always been a bit pie in the sky. Even just getting to a point where the roster is called solid.
I will say (as have others), regardless of other positions, I think we can make waves next season is we somehow get lucky with a QB.

Damieon George, Bama OL will visit this weekend

George has 2 years of eligibility remaining
quote:
At Alabama, George played in 17 games. He started three games in 2022, including wins over Auburn and Arkansas.
George is the fourth transfer offensive lineman confirmed to visit Auburn this week. Eastern Michigan’s Marcellus Johnson, Western Kentucky’s Gunner Britton and Baylor’s Micah Mazzccua also are visiting the Tigers.

On Gunner Britton —
Johnson, the Eastern Michigan LT also has just a year of eligibility
quote:
Britton this season started every game at tackle for Western Kentucky. He played the first six games at right tackle before switching to left tackle the final six games. He was a second-team All-CUSA selection.
Britton has one year of eligibility remaining.
Johnson, the Eastern Michigan LT also has just a year of eligibility

Geez how many bama OL have entered the portal this year?

Cohen, Brockermeyer, Bowles, George, and Kight

Harsin did more in the portal than Freeze has done so far.
If you mean he had more signed or committed than yes, but "Impact" players. Maybe only 2-3 out of the 21' and 22' signees combined. Some depth with others and plenty of misses. Let's finish the recruiting season and portal signees and than make a judgment. We still have Spring where more will enter.
We have a severe drought of players at several positions created by the last two coaches. QB is the biggest need now along with some other OL, LB and DL I can agree for depth and ready to make contributions.

He really didn’t. Ok, maybe he sent a lot of players to the portal. You win. And Freeze is still working the portal for the current class.. How can you already make such a claim?
Harsin didn’t effectively replace players with the portal. He doesn’t deserve credit for Moore when he didn’t effectively replace Hudson. He gets credit for DJ James but also gets credit for a whole bunch of holes on our roster that he created too. If Harsin utilized the portal as a means of strategically piecing together our team then he would’ve gotten credit with the portal. But he didn’t. The USCe Gamecocks- that was a team that deserves credit with the portal. Harsin deserves credit for growing a fighter with no punch.

If you count Leota, in addition to James and our Nose Tackle. That's a decent start. I agree it doesn't go far beyond that. I think there was a guy from Kansas St on the defensive line who played. The wide receiver from Georgia was decent. I hope Freeze can significantly exceed this in just one class.
