I hate to interrupt the non recruiting info, but are the UVA OTs any good? I haven’t watched a Virginia game this year.

Is it outside the realm of possibility that Gus wasn't being picky enough and was taking guys that didn't have a high enough ceiling to develop into SEC players?

This is a interesting statement. Not pointing at you Poker, I totally understand your statement. But it does somewhat lie in the same realm with the ones who always stated that Gus loaded up the recruiting classes with higher ranked players that were poorly evaluated and were not SEC players

So what I ask is, who are these players? What players did Gus bring in that were not only highly ranked (you know to pump up the rankings) that were not also offered by some of the other bigger SEC programs? It would be interesting to see who those players were

My only point here is that Malzahn did not bring in guys that were ranked high just to boost the rankings. That is total mouth breathers stating that. The issue was always development and bad luck at times, with these guys. We brought in guys that either we had shitty luck with and some that purely did not get developed which is a coaching problem, not a recruiting issue

When I say shitty luck, Im talking guys like Kyle Davis, Christian Westerman, etc. Guys with shite loads of talent but for some reason, just could not get out of their own way.

Maybe Gus' problem was an evaluation one and not player development?

I think its both and I think every coach faces it. Harsin will as well. His 3rd highest ranked player from last year just hit the portal. There is no avoiding it

If you’re talking about Harvey — Gus’s staff recruited him and he signed before Harsin was hired.

I do agree with your post, though. So much goes into players panning out that it can’t be reduced to one reason.

22 spots on the field. We bring in 25ish guys a season. Most don’t work out. Goes back to what I’ve been saying lately. Talent acquisition business. Load and reload

I get it but we kept his commit and going by some here, that means he was not developed?

If you look at the talent being brought in by Kirby, how much of that talent "wont be developed"? A ton of it. A ton will transfer. Goes to your statement, keep reloading. Its the only way

He signed. He committed back in August 2020. Literally signed binding paperwork before Harsin was hired.

If you need a name for your weird scenario of blame here then you can use Steele instead He was in charge that ESD

These types of under the radar players are probably the best ones in the portal usually. We signed 2 top rated guys last year from other big time programs that were not that good: Finley and Roberson. The guys who played the best came from lesser programs: Leota, Harris, Fair.

It doesnt matter when he came and it fits my explanation exactly. You are just being too biased to want to see it. Nobody is blaming anyone, just a explanation of what every coach faces

Wait what am I being biased about? It’s just a simple fact. Harvey signed binding paperwork with Auburn after Gus was fired and before Harsin was hired.

That’s not me taking a side or coming in with a point to make. It’s just literally what happened.

Harsin did actually recruit guys after he was hired and he did sign players on NSD. Harvey just wasn’t one of them
