As documented last class our commits had a net 100 spot combined jump up in the last rankings of the class. Also 2 or 3 classes ago we had a number of commits get a good bump in final class rankings.

Do you remember how Eli Stove fell out of the top 247 at the last moment despite being in the top 100 throughout most of his recruiting process. That was a BS drop.

Yes & agreed. Still not the norm for AU commit rankings movements. The norm has been a net gain in final rankings & throughout. Remember also a good number of our 4*s in the 2017 class were 3*s this time last year. The AU commit drop is a myth some in our fan base choose to hold for some reason. Sure it happens sometimes but it's not the norm.

I think it is less a thought that our commits get dropped as it is bamas get bumped.

If Marquis McClain plays the "Big Slot WR" role at 6'2 225lb, should we just call him a TE?

It is the closest we'll ever have to a TE running routes under Gus

I'll allow it. I really hope he gets some good playing time this year. His skillset is really unique. Would be nice to have a WR on the edge that has the size to be a good blocker so we aren't always rotating our wR's out depending on run vs pass.

2020 4* WR Kobe Hudson has set commit date of April 13. AU thought to be the favorite. Teammates with 2020 AU commit Andy Boykin and 2019 Bama commit King Mwikuta

There is still some merit with the veracity of the bumps.

Auburn tends to get the guys that were 3* bumped up to fringe or just inside of the top 250 types.

Bama, on the other hand, tend to get the inside of the top 100 bump.

There is definitely a difference.

I would trust Nick Saban's player evaluations more than say 247/Rivals..... seems like 247/Rivals do too

Most of the "Bama bumps" seem to come after summer camps at schools when "new to the scene" recruits or players who had huge development earn scholarships. There are huge developments/growth that happens from end JR season to SR season, which is extremely difficult for recruiting sites observe and monitor for every recruit

At that point in time, recruiting sites w/ limited info either have to decide to trust a program's eval or risk being late in identifying a recruit.

.... Well recruiting sites get punished for being late in identifying a star, no one bats an eye when a recruit slides down rankings due to "unexpected inconsistent performance"

5-star OL Clay Webb, No. 1 prospect in Alabama, updates his recruitment, sets tentative decision timeline (SECCountry)
quote:

State of Alabama’s No. 1 target updates timeline

ATLANTA — When Clay Webb isn’t busy being the No. 1 football prospect in Alabama, he’s wrestling.

Webb helped Oxford (Ala.) High to the AHSAA state duals title this spring. Wanting to place all his focus into that, Webb hasn’t done much with his recruitment since the fall. He expects that to change soon with a few upcoming visits, but he has nothing set yet. For Auburn, keep an eye on the April 7 spring game as his most likely return date.

The quick-twitch offensive lineman re-established himself on the recruiting circuit Sunday at the Atlanta Opening regional. He earned an Opening finals invite following the camp.

With his attention fully turned to football and recruiting, Webb still doesn’t expect to make his decision in the immediate future. He will be an early enrollee, however.

“December, most likely,” Webb said. “I’m going to take my time. I just got out of wrestling season, so I’m about to start on spring practice.”

Webb has been most closely linked to Auburn and Alabama, though Georgia, Florida and Clemson are out-of-state programs keeping Webb interested. He will take a few visits this spring and fall — perhaps a few Midwest and West Coast official visits — but it’s likely to come down to an Iron Bowl recruiting battle.

What will he be looking for?

“Show me how I fit in,” Webb said. “Let me get with the players and show me what it’s like, getting to know the coaches better.”

Digging into the Auburn-Alabama battle for Clay Webb

Webb has been the top player in Alabama for two cycles, and both in-state schools have been recruiting him since his freshman year.

Even with the out-of-state pushes, Webb admits the Crimson Tide and Tigers have a bit of an advantage.

“Oh yes sir, just because of their radius and distance to me,” Webb said.

Webb has two in-state friendships that will weigh heavy in this decision.

At Alabama, it’s fellow offensive line target Pierce Quick, a vocal leader in the Crimson Tide class.

“He wants me to come there and play with him. He wants me to be his little buddy, stay with him there the entire time,” Webb said. “Oh yes [it helps Alabama], I’ll already have an upper edge on knowing somebody there and get straight to the program with someone I know.”

At Auburn, the head of the class Bo Nix and his high school teammate K.J. Britt have been the main player recruiters.

The message from Nix is a fairly simple one.

“Hey, Clay, why don’t you come here and block for me, all right?” Webb said, laughing. “He wants me to go there.”

As for the coaching relationships, Alabama holds an edge. Webb said his closest bond is with Crimson Tide offensive line coach Brent Key, who he referred to as “like a really, really, really close uncle.”

Auburn isn’t completely starting from scratch, however, through its O-line coaching change.

Webb knew J.B. Grimes during the early stages of his recruitment, and they’ve reconnected since Grimes’ return to the program. That will only help the Tigers as they battle it out with the Crimson Tide for the state’s top prospect.

“I feel like I kind of have an advantage with that since I’ve already known the guy for a while. … I like him, just his coaching style,” Webb said. “I already like the team, all the players, how they come together automatically like brothers, the way the team just carries itself.”
