THE CASE FOR TENNESSEE

“Tennessee has quietly hung around in the background throughout Sheffield’s recruitment. The Vols’ previous staff was actually the first school to offer the St. Simons native a scholarship, and the staff change actually helped Tennessee. Sheffield is close with quality control analyst Tino Sunseri, formally one of the athlete’s main recruiters at FSU. The two talk regularly and there’s plans for Sheffield to visit the Vols with his family before making a decision. There’s no doubt Tennessee is playing catch-up behind Auburn and Ohio State, but they feel like they have a real shot if they can get the Under Armour All-American back on campus.” – Jesse Simonton, Volquest.com

THE VERDICT

“With a teammate committed to Auburn now and many thinking he has been a lean to the Tigers for a long time, you have to think Sheffield will commit to Auburn and keep the pipeline rolling.” – Mike Farrell, Rivals.com National Director of Recruiting

Three-Point Stance: The Grayson Four, NFL Draft steals and surprises (Rivals)
quote:

1. The Grayson Four

The Grayson Four committed on Tuesday and here’s my breakdown of what each commitment means:

LB Owen Pappoe – This is a huge get for Auburn and a kid who could grow into the next Roquan Smith-undersized linebacker in the SEC. He’s been a star since middle school, he’s a huge name in this class so he will help recruiting and he hurts UGA as he was coveted by the Dawgs. His name recognition alone will boost recruiting and will help Auburn’s efforts in Georgia. As recently as the beginning of this year, it appeared Georgia was the team to beat, so this is a great recruiting job.

OL Wayna Morris – I like Morris a lot and think he has a very high ceiling. Once he fills out his frame, especially his upper body, he will be elite as his technique is off the charts. This is a huge get for Tennessee as it will help recruiting efforts in the Atlanta area and give the Vols quite a bit of momentum for the 2019 class. This hurts Auburn as it made a serious run at Morris and thought it had taken the lead.

DB Kenyatta Watson – Watson is a tall, athletic defensive back from the Southeast so that’s a huge deal for Texas as it attempts to recruit the area. Texas doesn’t need to recruit nationally, but it helps to land players from the Southeast and this will draw more interest from Georgia recruits to the Longhorns. This hurts not only Florida State, where he was previously committed, but also Notre Dame, which made a very strong push. But I can't stress enough the importance of this commitment for future recruiting in the Southeast; this is huge.

DE Kevin Harris – Harris was all over the map in his recruiting looking at LSU, Miami and others before he chose Alabama. He’s a hybrid and reminds me a bit of Tim Williams and I especially like his motor. The kid never stops moving. As he fills out, his length and speed will remain and he could be a terror off the edge. This hurts Miami especially as the ‘Canes were thought to be the team to beat even as recently as a few days prior to his commitment.

KN had article up on 5* OT Devontae Dobbs last night. Dobbs told UGA 247 he wants to return on a trip to AU. Says he fell in love with AU when he was a freshman & has always wanted to go back even after Hand left. Says he's developing a relationship with Grimes. Right now says Ohio State is recruiting him the hardest. Would like to have decision before the season but admits that might not be possible

KN also had a note on 4* OG Keiondre Jones. Hearing that SCAR might not be as hard after him anymore. Sounds like this has really turned into a AU/UF battle. He's visited the Plains 4 times this year but UF signed his cousin Emory Jones last class

John Garcia, Bama guy but covers southeast for 247, posted these tidbits about on Coynis Miller this morning
quote:

- He said he reports May 28
- He said he was around 295 lbs right now
- He said he has been steady with Auburn's physical plan for him and has been following workouts as he focused on wrapping up his academics
- He said he will room with Harold Joiner

Owen Pappoe's called "The Freak" for many reasons (Rivals)
quote:

Yes, we all know Owen Pappoe tests off the charts. He blazes through the 40 yard dash time after time. He is about as explosive as they come. He is shifty and agile for his size.

There are many reasons he has picked up the nickname "The Freak".

The No. 21 prospect in the country committed to Auburn over Georgia Tuesday night, so the freak athlete is headed for the Plains.

Why is he called The Freak? Some say because of his athleticism and some say because of the way he plays the game of football.

We caught up with a few players that have competed against the 6-foot-1, 210 pound linebacker out of Loganville (Ga.) Grayson and here is what they had to say.

Andrew Booth, 2019 DB, Archer HS: "Owen is a great competitor. He won't settle for good. He is not much of a talker — he Just does it."

Warren Burrell, 2019 CB, North Gwinnett HS: "Owen is just a different type of linebacker. He's not as tall as they usually are but he's really fast and athletic. He's just a handful for a lot of offenses."

Robert Cooper (FSU signee), 2018 DL, South Gwinnett HS: "Owen is a heck of a player. I've been going against him since he was a freshman and he hasn’t lost a step. He's just been getting better. He’s definitely going to be a great one, no doubt about that."

Joshua Ezeudu (North Carolina signee), 2018 OL, Archer HS: "Owen is a very fast player. He comes off the edge very fast. He is the definition of a sideline to sideline player. He also is not afraid of contact."

Matthew Hill (Auburn signee), 2018 ATH, Brookwood HS: "He’s a dog. He’s going to attack the ball regardless of the play."

Jalen Perry (Georgia commit), 2019 DB, Dacula HS: "He is a great player overall. He has great speed at the linebacker position which allows him to run sideline to sideline. Also his speed allows him to be a very effective pass rusher. He plays physical and can tackle well in space."

Derrick McLendon, 2019 DE, Tucker HS: "He's the freak because he's very athletic athletic... As you can see and this is only his fourth year really playing football. He hasn't even reached his full potential."

Nolan Smith, 2019 DE, IMG Academy: "The freak is something we always called him because if you look at him, you think he was made in a lab."

Didn’t we just sign a big time back last year?

Beat out Alabama for Asa Martin

We missed on our top targets who I believe were Master Teague and Dameon Pierce. Pierce was at least my top target.

Also signed a bigger back in Herold Joiner

I doubt Joiner gets much PT at RB. Horton has hinted around that he'll play some TE some WR some Hback

If Joiner and we were smart, we would use him in a similar capacity to what Indianapolis used Dallas Clark, however with the ability to give him some runs as well. Joiner coming out of the backfield on routes against LB's and S's won't be fair.

Pretty sure Pierce & Martin were in the same tier for AU. Agreed on Teague tho

JLee seems to believe Andrew Booth will be at BCW. That would be big for AU

Also ND 247 says that AU coaches will visit Luke Deal on Friday

If y'all want a good laugh and insight as to how uga fans think, you should listen to the portion of this podcast discussing Pappoe. Host discusses OP's comments that he wanted to play with "dogs" and basically suggests that AU has no "dogs". References Simpson, Morris and Sheffield in there but essentially says they arent "dogs" because uga didnt recruit them. These guys are donuts they have their heads so far up their own arses.

Ya the Dawgnation "journalists" are insane homers. Also guest he has on there is former Bama OL. I think AU has plenty of "dogs" already on defense (as they should know considering how offense fared overall against AU last year). Pappoe will be joining a defense that will at least returns guys like Moultry, Monday & Big Kat. Plenty of good defensive talent on Plains already & Pappoe can hopefully help us add some more

That thread is glorious. Love this quote:

quote:

Sidenote, I was scanning the Bama board yesterday after Pappoe's commitment. I saw one of their "mods" Kirk McNair say he saw OP's family "felt most comfortable" at Auburn. He put in quotes like that to insinuate that they were greased. For one, for their mod to say that is ridiculous. Two, Bama is hilarious. Like they don't do the same thing! ????

Or maybe, he put it in quotes as he was quoting their exact words?

I just cracks me up - like "dogs" is some quantifiable certainty I've never seen a fanbase that has so little self-awareness. I really think its a product of UGA not having any counterpart worth a damn in the State (GT, pfft). Every other state in the SEC (other than LA) hs multiple programs that keep one another in check, particularly in the media. UGA and the state media is just a constant circle jerk, and no one will discuss any negatives or faults.

Here's another gem:

quote:

So Alabama and Auburn and Clemson pay recruits, but we don’t?

Think about it like the freeway- Some of us drive nicer cars without neon lights, spinners, and whited out messages across the front and back windshields. Right now, like Bama, we’re driving an S class with a V12. We can cruise 10 miles over and folks still notice and hop in.

Then you have Auburn, they get the Camaro, paint it two-tone orange and blue, and get on your nerves as they weave in and out of lanes going 20 over with nobody riding shotgun. They also make use of the latest radar detector and it serves them well. They can always find a kid who’ll take a shotgun seat over the backseat in the Benz and then realize they screwed up when they are circling Mangum street looking for a parking spot while we pull in to the preferred lot at Mercedes Benz stadium.

Then you have Ole Miss. They put nitrous boosters on the Mini Cooper and cause a huge commotion as everyone notices the ridiculousness as they max out at 104mph in the right lane and are quickly pulled over.
