Why a recruiting rival’s wide receiver plan signals positive outcome for Auburn (SECCountry)
quote:
Why a rival’s WR plan should help Auburn recruiting
I wrote extensively two weeks ago about Auburn’s plan at wide receiver going forward.
With Kyle Davis’ dismissal, the Tigers were out a big-bodied receiver. Fear not, there are three left in the 2018 class — Justyn Ross, Seth Williams and Tommy Bush — who have interest in Auburn, and that sentiment has been reciprocated by the coaching staff.
But with all three, especially Ross and Williams, the insecurity of in-state recruiting battles with Alabama creeps in. Ross, Williams and Bush have been linked to both Auburn and Alabama.
Ross is in for an Auburn, Alabama and Clemson battle down the stretch, though it’s actually the out-of-state school favored. Williams has been a mystery. The Tuscaloosa native hasn’t visited Auburn this season despite the Tigers feeling like their the likely candidates to land him. Bush is trying to figure out which schools want him as much as he wants them.
In all three cases, Alabama and Auburn are major factors. But the Crimson Tide could end up doing the Tigers wide receiver recruiting favors as the cycle closes down.
So far, Alabama has one wide receiver committed — Shaun Shivers’ high school teammate Xavier Williams. If you count athlete Slade Bolden, that’s two. In Alabama recruiting reporter Chris Kirschner’s mock recruiting classes, he has Alabama taking two or three wide receivers. Even if you leave Bolden as an athlete, it doesn’t look like there will be much room left at wide receiver.
Jaylen Waddle is set to visit Alabama this weekend, and the Crystal Ball trends show the Crimson Tide look like a heavy favorite. With Jim McElwain’s departure from Florida, a Jacob Copeland flip from Florida to Alabama seems likely. There are others suich as Joshua Moore who are also high on the Crimson Tide.
But Waddle, Copeland, Bolden, Moore and others fit a similar build. None of them are the 6-foot-4 or taller type like Ross, Williams and Bush. Whether or not that’s a preference by Alabama or its new offensive staff is unknown, but it looks like they’re keying in more on the smaller, quick-twitch wide receivers than the big-bodied guys.
Auburn already has two of the quicker-twitch type players committed with Shedrick Jackson and Matthew Hill (though they’re both around 6-2). But for the rest of the class, aside from 4-star WR Anthony Schwartz, Auburn is only in the market for the tall, physical type of receiver. With Ross and Williams especially, it’s a boost for the Tigers that their in-state recruiting rival appears to be mostly in the market for the different style.
With Ross, I’ve been told Alabama and Auburn both believe he’s a Clemson lean at this time. Auburn feels it can pull it off down the stretch with a strong finish to the season. The Alabama receiver trend has to signal positive news for Auburn with Williams. As for Bush, Auburn’s best shot will be to score an official visit, which may be more likely to Auburn than Alabama if the Crimson Tide add Waddle or Copeland soon.

Auburn recruiting plan at quarterback
It’s been the popular question in my Facebook Live chats and recruiting mailbag calls: Is Auburn going to take a second quarterback in the 2018 class?
Since 5-star quarterback Justin Fields chose Georgia, that’s been the thought on most Auburn fan’s minds. As it turns out, that question has also been on the mind of the Tigers coaching staff. That’s a big reason why Gus Malzahn and Chip Lindsey went to see Joey Gatewood play in person last week — because they’re trying to figure out if they feel the need to take a second quarterback in 2018 when it’s likely the Tigers will be the front-runner to get Bo Nix in the 2019 class.
I’ve spoken with two of Auburn’s potential quarterback targets going forward — James Foster and A.J. Curry — and they’ve received slightly different messages from the staff about the quarterback plan going forward.
Curry said after the Ole Miss game that Lindsey told him the plan is to take two quarterbacks. Whether or not Curry became the leader remains to be seen. Foster said Lindsey is still working to figure out if Auburn wants/needs a second quarterback in this class. If Auburn takes two, he feels an offer could come from the Tigers.
As I’ve always stated, my sources have told me the choice is a fluid decision-making process that’ll likely run into December when official visits take place. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Curry and Foster — and potentially others — take official visits to Auburn that help determine whether or not the staff feels strongly enough about a second guy.
Regardless, Auburn will only take a second quarterback if there’s a high level of confidence in his skill level and ability to be developed.
Personally I would love for us to scoop up Foster if possible

TigerPaw,
Foster is really maturing this year, a lot of upside.
But only if we get the offensive line guys I want, need I go through the list again. Just kiddin, but I really would like to hear some good news on that front.

Agreed. Hill is visiting for UGA and good chance he will be back for Iron Bowl. Still like our chances but beating one of UGA/BAMA would really help. He's been very upfront about playing for a winner
Don't feel good about either Traore or Wonnum. Honestly Traore might be higher on my want list just because he could play day one. We will see what happens

AU had a pretty sick graphic they sent out for Halloween to recruits
FWIW AJ Curry got one too which is interesting

Paw,
Does Traore have three to play three? I agree with you, and hopefully he sees that he could have playing time early and often.
Also any chance Stutts plays tackle at the next level?

He has two years to play two I believe. Will be an EE
I doubt Stutts plays tackle. Doesn't have the length, built more like a guard. I think he's gonna be a monster inside though one day. If there's one thing we can recruit under Malzahn it's big run blockers in the interior OL

FWIW Bama 247 has Martin in Bama's mock class. Hank South says one source has told him doesn't think Martin signs with AU but sounds like that's because they think coaching change happens
Also surprisingly had Andres Fox in their projection as well

Not a huge surprise but 2019 4* LB Owen Pappoe did not include AU in his top 3. UGA/CLEM/NEB made the cut. Kinda surprised NEB made it over BAMA but sounds like he's all Dawg anyway
UGA will more than likely sign the #1 class in 2019 unless something starts heading downhill for Smart. We need to beat them in the worst way in 2 weeks

Hope we're still in contact with Pierce.

Agreed. I think tho if Malzahn keeps job Martin sticks. He's very close with Lindsey

So bama is going to get Emory Jones despite having Tua. How do these coaches convince these kids to come sit for 2-3 years?

Both Wolk & KN CB'd Channing Tindall to UGA today. Dawgs are absolutely killing it on recruiting trail

No idea but it's crazy how Bama recruits purely dual threat guys now. Huts, Tua & now Jones will give them 3 straight dual threat QBs. They will probably get Tua's little bro as well who is a dual threat

Great time for us to convert to a traditional offense and tap the pro style QBs.
