Auburn and Georgia first to offer 2020 DL (Rivals)
quote:

THE LATEST: There is a new name to know in the state of Georgia. Myles Murphy was scouted by Rivals last weekend and he impressed. Murphy stood out the minute Powder Springs (Ga.) Hillgrove at 6-foot-5, 240 pounds. He has long arms, he is athletic and he is going to explode as a recruit in the coming months.

Auburn and Georgia had him on campus over the summer — both offered him.

IN HIS OWN WORDS: "I went to camps at Georgia, Auburn and Clemson this summer," said Murphy. "Georgia and Auburn offered me and Clemson told me they were going to keep watching me and they want me to come back next summer.

"I was surprised by the offers, but excited about them too."

IN-STATE SCHOOL OFFERS FIRST: "When I went to Georgia's camp, it was my first time there. I worked out the first day and we worked on fundamentals and coach [Tray] Scott put me in a group with top guys.

"I stayed over night and I just hung out with the coaches on the second day. They offered me before I left and that was my first offer. I really liked coach Scott, how he coaches and how he communicates with his players.

"I will be back to Georgia for a game this season."

GARNER STOOD OUT: "Like Georgia, Auburn offered me when I was there for camp. I jumped out to them coach [Rodney] Garner told me. I liked it over there and coach Garner was impressive. He has like 31 guys playing in the NFL, so he has done some great things with guys he has coached.

"Other than coach Garner, I liked the dorms at Auburn and the atmosphere was cool too. I am working on finding a game to get to there."

ANOTHER SEC WAS CHILDHOOD FAVORITE: "I was always a fan of Alabama growing up. I have watched them for a while and I like their defense, I like how they have dominated and I like how Nick Saban has coached his guys up. I went there my freshman year and I liked it a lot."

LOCATION MATTERS: "My dad has talked to me about this and he said that all schools are going to offer a great education, so that I know. I am going to see who I like, but one thing I know, I would like to stay home."

RIVALS REACTION: It is just the beginning of Murphy's recruitment and more offers are expected in this fall. Clemson has him on their radar, he has heard some from Ohio State and he would like an offer from Alabama. He is new to this, he is not thinking much about favorites, so lets give it some time to get going for Murphy.

I thought this dude was an AU legacy and he grew up a Bama fan?

Shedrick Jackson, George Pickens make Hoover football a must-see for Auburn fans (SECCountry)
quote:

Hoover High previews the Tigers’ WR future

It didn’t seem to matter who matched up against Shedrick Jackson or George Pickens.

In Hoover High School’s game Friday night, the two Auburn wide receiver commits had the task of going up against a defending state champion Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) defense with Power 5 commits and targets all over the roster. As the game wore on, however, it was Jackson and Pickens who shined strongest.

Jackson caught 5 passes for 152 yards, including a pair of 5o-plus-yard snags. Pickens snagged 6 for 96 yards, including a key fourth-down reception that extended the game.

Hoover football games this fall will give Auburn fans a nice dose of the future of the Tigers’ receiving threat.

“It’s been fun because, you know, you get somebody like him on one side, and I work my tail off on the other side, it’s a problem,” Jackson told SEC Country after the game. “It’s a big problem.”

The two wide receivers bring different talents to the squad.

Jackson, the 2018 commit, stands 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds. He excels in the short-to-intermediate routes, but also has the breakaway speed to burn a cornerback in man-to-man coverage. Pickens, the 2019 commit, stands 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds and provides a go-up-and-get-it downfield threat.

It was interesting to hear each Tigers commit’s scouting report on the other.

“He’s got great hands, strong, fastest kid I’ve probably ever seen,” Pickens said of Jackson. “He blows right by you. He don’t even need no release.”

Jackson’s description of Pickens provided a similar, awe-inspired tone.

“He’s probably the most athletic person I’ve seen. He’s a freak,” Jackson said of Pickens. “He can be as good as he wants to be in the future as long as he keeps working and doing what he has to do.”

George Pickens ready to set 2019 foundation

Jackson remains an integral part of Auburn’s 13 commitments in the 2018 class, but Pickens is the foundational piece for the Class of 2019. Pickens committed to Auburn earlier this summer to become the first member of that class.

His reasons mimicked the explanation of many.

“The culture,” Pickens told SEC Country. “This is like Auburn to me. I know every coach. I know every staffer because they coached my brother [Chris Humes from Arkansas State].”

Pickens is the No. 193 overall prospect in the 2019 class, but he’s likely to rise with more exposure like Friday night vs. Grayson.

Now the question emerges: Can the Tigers hold onto its first 2019 commit?

Pickens is leaving the door open for other programs, but admits even he’d be surprised to see another school have the same effect on him as Auburn.

“I’m still talking to other schools. Other schools are still looking at me. But right now, Auburn’s the only one still for me right now,” Pickens said. “I’m going. I don’t want to say there’s no way I don’t go. I’m still looking at other schools. But Auburn is my main school, so even I’d be surprised if I didn’t go to Auburn.”

Pickens returned to Auburn for a visit over the weekend. He still hears from schools such as Florida State, Michigan, Michigan State, Alabama, Southern Cal, Oklahoma and others who are contemplating offers. Pickens remains cordial with them.

But, for now, his attention is firmly placed on building a successful 2019 class around him.

“It’s really just to persuade folks to come to Auburn, show them the culture and really learn how to play the game of football,” Pickens said.

FWIW he told KN that Bo Nix DM'd him to wish him good luck before his first game. Nix to Pickens would be a fun combo to watch in the future

Top TE plans to return to Auburn

Auburn’s tight end recruiting remains a bit of a mystery, but there is one prospect who the Tigers would take in a heartbeat.

That’s Luke Ford.

Ford emerged as perhaps the best tight end in the nation following the The Opening. That came shortly after his first visit to the Plains, which included a personal campus tour from Gus Malzahn. With that said, Ford has expressed publicly that Georgia and Alabama have a little bit of an advantage for the tight end, especially if Justin Fields chooses the Bulldogs.

But Fields is still considering Auburn, as well, and so is Ford.

On Sunday, he tweeted out a photo thanking the Tigers for their continued interest.

Ford has visited Auburn only the one time.

But as the season gets underway and official visits start to be lined up, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Ford make a return trip to the Plains. He told SEC Country on Sunday night to expect him at Auburn sometime this fall in some capacity.

“It’s a pretty good chance,” Ford said.

Two things have to happen for us to have a chance at Ford. Land Justin Fields and throw the ball to the tight end. I think the second one might be the least likely

How Auburn commits, targets fared in their high school games this weekend (SECCountry)
quote:

Football season is officially back.

The college season enters Week 1, but several high school seasons are already underway. Auburn’s commitment list saw several impressive performances over the weekend. Some of the Tigers’ top targets added to that intrigue, as well.

As for the missing prospects, Daquan Newkirk starts next week. Josh Marsh played in a preseason game, but provided double-digit tackles in the loss. Michael Harris’ team blew out its opponent, so he didn’t play much. Kolbi Fuqua played, but no stats were available in a loss. KN put out his Take 5 article for the week. It's VIP so here's summary of each slide

- Talks about how impressive Joey Gatewood was Saturday and the numbers he put up despite rotating with Riley Smith. KN says would like to see Gatewood a bit more engaged with teammates when he's not in the game but overall not much to complain about. Apparently numerous people at game were in awe by just how big Gatewood is

- KN says landing Asa Martin was a huge win for AU over BAMA. There was a lot of confidence in Tuscaloosa because they typically don't miss on instate kids they want. But in the end relationships namely Asa's closeness with Tim Horton and Chip Lindsey won out. Apparently Martin is really close with Coynis Miller

- Says to not take Florida lightly and they are a very real threat. However, he's very close with Asa Martin and Rodney Garner. Apparently Miller told KN that he thought Martin would commit to AU. KN still thinks Miller ends up at AU but UF is making a push. Also says Bama has work to do (specifically communication with position coach) but that you can never count them out

- AU's most important game in September for recruiting is obviously Clemson. Clemson will be hosting a slew of top targets and could give AU a chance to impress in person

- KN says AU's confidence in landing 4* WR Seth Williams is at an all time high. Apparently staff has put as much effort and energy into recruiting Williams as they have for 4* WR Justyn Ross. There are some that think Williams has higher upside. Williams will be on campus for the Georgia Southern game. No news on whether Ross will be there as well but he has told Clemson 247 he will be at the AU/CLEM game Week 2

Auburn would be number two in Development and number two in Friends/Family arguably number one with the likes of Cam his 7v7 coach and Hill the recently committed receiver and "best freind".

Nah dude, we are at best second there. Any family influence he's getting, outside maybe his dad who is more businesslike, is pro UGA and he's already said himself he has the best relationships with their players/recruits.

Things might can still change but it's looking real good for UGA right now.

This happens a good bit. Had a HS teammate that played in the BigXII, top 150 recruit

Got absolutely stonewalled by an opponent because he was hit in the backfield every play. Guy ended up being a solid productive back in college despite that bad game

I look at Fields strictly as extra icing ATP.

Gatewood has everything needed.

Don't get it twisted, I would love to land JF. I mostly just don't want him at UGA. He is human though when the pads come on.

Fields will probably win a national title wherever he goes. He's special. I don't think Gatewood is anywhere near a sure thing.

I think the future for AU at QB is with Willis over Gatewood, if we don't get Fields.

Behind JW, his claim to fame in the first round is Christian Ponder and EJ Manuel. His rep as a QB whisper is a bit overstated.

You forgot big time bust #1 overall in the 2007 draft Jamarcus Russell.

Ha. No, I was reading about him too, but I was looking for positive examples of his greatness. And I know you are being sarcastic. I when I saw he was being credited with JR.

Miami Central is a top 60 team in the nation. They'd probably bitch slap every 3A team in the nation if they played them.

I am going to go against you here. No disrespect, but I want to see more from JF with the pads on. I don't doubt that he is capable of taking a team with talent anywhere.

I also realize JG is raw. But give him the opportunities that JFhas had w/ private coaching, and being BFF's w/ Cam.

I am wearing my O&B glasses. I can admit that. Yes, I still want JF at AU. As long as we keep Nix.

I just like Joey. All his passes were sweet, catchable balls. Still, he had the DE bearing down on him, and he went 0-60like my 911, in the other direction.

6 Alabama prep stars picked among nation's top 2020 prospects (AL.com)
quote:

The next wave of elite college football prospects have been identified by national recruiting websites, and six Alabama players are included in the latest list.

Scout.com today released its initial Class of 2020 Watch List, which features 150 players from around the county.

Five of the six Alabama players are skill-position athletes - Carver-Montgomery receiver Antwan Burnett, Hewitt-Trussville receiver Dazalin Worsham, Fultondale athlete Jayson Jones, Lanett athlete Kristian Story and Hoover quarterback Robby Ashford. The sixth Alabama prepster is Jackson-Olin linebacker Quandarius Robinson.

These players are high school sophomores, which means some haven't made a major varsity impact yet.

Worsham caught three passes for 52 yards in last week's Champions Challenge exhibition game in his Huskies debut vs. Pell City. Worsham, a 6-foot-1, 170-pounder who transferred from Gardendale to Hewitt-Trussville during the offseason, has offers from Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Oregon, among others.

Burnett, a 6-foot-4, 195-pounder, already has offers Alabama, Florida and Georiga.

Jones, who plays quarterback at Fultondale but is projected as a receiver or defensive back in college, has already received interest from Alabama, Georgia, UAB and Southern Miss.

Story, a coach's son who measures 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, has offers from Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and Mississippi State.

Ashford, a 6-foot-3, 200-pounder, impressed on the summer camp circuit but opened the season as Hoover's back-up quarterback. He's already getting heavy interest from Georgia, Missouri and Illinois.

Robinson, a 6-foot-4, 195-pounder, already has an Auburn offer and plays at the same high school that produced current Auburn linebacker T.D. Moultry.

We have offered Worsham & Robinson already. Offer for Ashford could be coming soonish

FWIW I don't think this is a bad take. I don't necessarily agree as I think Fields and Lawrence are proven premier talents above everyone else but I do think Gatewood is a guy that has tremendous room for growth and considering where he is right now that's exciting. I said it earlier but I think he has the highest ceiling in the class. But he's got a much longer way to go to reach it than Fields & Lawrence do for theirs & he's far from a sure thing in my eyes. But if he does, dude is going to be a monster

I agree here. True boom or bust as a QB, is Gatewood.

He is not dissimilar from Cam Newton as a HS QB at all, IMO. Big, fast, strong arms, very raw throwers, not the best footwork, have to learn to throw in the pocket and learn the mental side of playing QB.
