Loyalty a key for longtime Auburn safety commit Carlito Gonzalez (AL.com)
quote:
n a recruiting landscape where loyalty is often fleeting -- from both coaches and prospects -- that particular trait is everything to three-star Auburn safety commit Carlito Gonzalez.
Gonzalez, who has been committed to Auburn since Aug. 9, 2015, is one of the Tigers' longest-standing commitments in the 2017 class. That means the Stephenson High product from Stone Mountain, Georgia, has stuck with Auburn through both a change at defensive coordinator and two at defensive backs coach.
"I've always been loyal since I was young," Gonzalez said. "Even when my friends got me in trouble I wouldn't tell my dad. They wouldn't even lie to my dad; I'd be the one lying to my dad. It's just loyalty and just staying down. It pays off in the end."
When Gonzalez committed to Auburn in 2015, he committed to play for defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and his protege, defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson. Muschamp and Robinson left for the head coaching job and defensive coordinator position, respectively, at South Carolina in December 2016.
Auburn replaced Muschamp with Kevin Steele, while Wesley McGriff took over the secondary from Robinson. Last month, however, McGriff accepted the defensive coordinator position at Ole Miss, leaving Gonzalez with yet another new coach to get acquainted with late in the recruiting cycle when the Tigers hired Greg Brown from Missouri.
Through it all, Gonzalez remained loyal to Auburn.
"It's been a couple years," Gonzalez said. "I'm excited that everything's closing, all the coaching changes and with Coach Steele and Greg Brown together now, when I come in I'm just going to learn so much. I'm just blessed to be here."

JUCO running back no longer committed to Auburn (AL.com)
quote:
Octavius Matthews, a running back from Itawamba (Miss.) Community College, confirmed to AL.com that he has decommitted from Auburn.
Matthews, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound three-star recruit who prepped at North Jackson High School in Stevenson, had been committed to Auburn since last May.
Matthews said he didn't want to go into detail on why he's no longer committed to the Tigers, but said he has a top three now of Tennessee, Purdue and Kansas.
Matthews took his official visit to Auburn last fall.
Auburn has commitments from running backs Devan Barrett of Tampa, Fla., and Alaric Williams of Southside.

Longstanding Auburn commit Alaric Williams 'way solid,' eager as signing day nears (AL.com)
quote:
Alaric Williams has waited 18-plus months for this moment. On Wednesday, that moment will finally come for the Auburn four-star athlete commit -- and it can't come soon enough.
"I've been anxious for a long time," Williams said. "I'm ready for it to be over with."
When Williams signs his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday, he will officially end a recruitment that has essentially been over since July 25, 2015 despite overtures from Nebraska's coaching staff. Williams, the Southside-Gadsden standout, has remained firm in his commitment to Auburn, and he's ready to make it official.
"I'm solid -- way solid," Williams said. "I'm done. I'm done."
Williams, who will play running back at Auburn, took his official visit to the Plains last weekend and received an in-home visit from head coach Gus Malzahn and running backs coach Tim Horton on Wednesday night after Malzahn made an appearance at Senior Bowl practice in Mobile earlier in the day.

Tracking Auburn coaches on recruiting trail as signing day nears (AL.com)
quote:
MONDAY
-- New offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey started the week with a quick trip to nearby Beauregard, according to the Opelika-Auburn News. Lindsey spoke with Beauregard's staff about La'Damian Webb, who was recently named "Mr. Football" in the state of Alabama.
Webb, who stands at 5-foot-9, 190 pounds, is a 2018 prospect and holds early offers from Bowling Green, Indiana, Iowa State and Troy.
-- Later on Monday, Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn joined Lindsey to meet with combo prospect John Samuel Shenker in Americus, Ga. The Tigers like Shenker at tight end, receiver and H-back and extended him a scholarship offer.
Shenker told AL.com this week he plans to take his official visit to Auburn this weekend. He was formerly committed to Auburn for baseball, so he's already familiar with the campus.
quote:
TUESDAY
-- One of Auburn's top uncommitted targets, Markaviest Bryant, was seen by members of Auburn's coaching staff Tuesday. The 6-foot-4, 226-pound defensive end from Cordele, Ga., is believed to be a Georgia lean, but Auburn will have a chance to sway him this weekend on his official visit. He is ranked as the nation's No. 14 weak-side defensive end in the 247Sports Composite.
-- On Tuesday night Malzahn, Lindsey and running backs coach Tim Horton were in Tampa, Fla., at the home of running back commit Devan Barrett. The four-star prospect took an official visit to Tennessee last weekend and is heading to Indiana this weekend. He told AL.com the Tigers are OK with him visiting other schools so close to National Signing Day and he is "looking at my choices wisely."
-- Auburn saw at least one other prospect in Florida Tuesday. Lindsey met with 2018 quarterback commit Joey Gatewood in St. Johns, Fla., according to 247Sports. Gatewood had a close relationship with former Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee, so getting him some face time with the new O.C. is big.
quote:
WEDNESDAY
-- Malzahn and Horton were both in Gadsden Wednesday for an in-home visit with athlete Alaric Williams. The four-star prospect is listed as an "athlete" by most recruiting services but is projected to play running back for the Tigers. Williams called the visit "great" on social media and has been solid with the Tigers for some time. Auburn lost a commitment from junior college running back Octavius Matthews Thursday, making Williams' commitment even more valuable to the Tigers.
-- In addition, Auburn saw two uncommitted prospects Wednesday -- defensive end Ryan Johnson and linebacker Tyler Taylor.
Johnson, a standout at St. Paul's in Mobile, took an official visit to Auburn last weekend and said he is down to Auburn and Stanford. He will official to Texas this weekend. Taylor, who hails from Buford, Ga., was also at Auburn last weekend. He said he's narrowed his choices to Auburn and LSU.
quote:
THURSDAY
-- Noah Igbinoghene also got some love from Auburn this week. Malzahn, Lindsey and receivers coach Kodi Burns all met with the Hewitt-Trussville star Thursday in Birmingham. Igbinoghene is Auburn's only wide receiver commitment at this time and remains solid with his commitment after his official visit last weekend.
quote:
FRIDAY
-- Tomorrow Malzahan is expected to stop by Mountain Brook, the home of 2018 running back prospect Harold Joiner, who holds SEC offers from Auburn, Kentucky and Ole Miss.

Some UGA "insider" claims Bryant is gonna end up at AU because will hire his HS coach as our 10th. I like it when the cheating allegations start flying from UGA cuz usually means good stuff for AU. I still wouldn't get hopes up yet in Bryant but thought it was interesting

Quit being a pussy. Think Nick Saban gives a rip if a tactic is bush league. You are what's wrong with Auburn being Auburn. shite, give his sister a swimming scholarship or something, do what ever takes within the rules to get the best players.

I hope we give that guy a QC analyst job not on field position

KN had update on 3* TE Kemari Averett who is the LOU commit visiting this weekend. Was considered shaky 2 weeks ago and wanted to visit AU. Staff held off due to OC changes. Lindsey signed off and so visit was setup. Still not certain if take or not but KN thinks he will be if visit goes well. Not a lock to flip but if he does it will be to AU. Other TE is a confirmed take

I love it when they squirm. It means things are in their right order.
Hopefully, Steele uses no lube, and goes in DRY!
