Auburn DB commits react to hiring of Greg Brown as secondary coach (SECCountry)
quote:

One of the key strategies of the transition from McGriff: maintaining continuity in recruiting.

Auburn already had four defensive backs on board in the 2017 class. If the Tigers end the cycle with only that quartet, they’ll still consider 2017 a success. The staff would like to add more DBs, of course, but satisfying the current crop and potentially building on that with one or two other pieces is a major pursuit.

Finding someone similar to McGriff — in experience and approach — became an integral part of the search. When Auburn landed Brown, it showed the Tigers’ desire to keep NFL and college coaching experience on staff. As for recruiting, Brown has served as a recruiting coordinator during his previous stops.

At the moment, Auburn has nothing to worry about with its four defensive back commitments: Malcolm Askew, Traivon Leonard, Jordyn Peters and Carlito Gonzalez.

Askew already is on campus as an early enrollee, so Auburn has no retention concerns with him.

SEC Country wasn’t able to catch up with Askew regarding the hiring of Brown. Sunday was move-in day, so Askew is now officially under the Auburn staff’s media ruling. If Askew speaks with media, it will be at Gus Malzahn and Co.’s discretion. You can turn to Lauren Shute and Justin Ferguson on the team side for any updates there.

quote:

“He has an impressive résumé. I’m eager to get to know him,” Peters said. “I’m still solid to Auburn.”

Peters’ Jan. 20 visit won’t be his only official visit in January, however. He also will take one to Virginia Tech, either the first weekend or the last weekend of the contact period, but Peters hasn’t officially nailed down the date.

That’ll be an interesting visit to track for two reasons: It shows Peters is covering his bases by having a backup school in place, if necessary. But Virginia Tech also happens to be the favorite to land fellow Auburn safety target Devon Hunter. It’s unknown at this time whether the decision of Hunter has any bearing on Peters.

That's interesting with Peters. Wonder if he lands wherever Hunter doesn't go

Henry Ruggs III scores long TD in Army All-American Bowl; see how Alabama, Auburn targets performed (AL.com)

Chesapeake, Va., safety Devon Hunter had four tackles.

Auburn linebacker commit T.D. Moultry from Birmingham had one tackle.

From what I can find it sounds like Moultry had a similar week to Ashley. Solid showing but not enough to be considered a standout. Doubt he gets that 5th star but hopefully ends up a composite top 100 player

Alright so the dead period ends January 12th I believe which means visits start this weekend. Thought I would post a general overview of where we stand right now for those who are just popping in to check for general updates

Enrolled
4* QB Jarrett Stidham - rooming with Chandler Cox
4* OG Nick Brahms
4* CB Malcolm Askew - rooming with KJ Britt
4* LB Kenney Britt
3* TE Salvatore Cannella
3* LB Chandler Wooten
3* QB Malik Willis - rooming with Tashawn Manning
3* DT Tashawn Manning - uncertain whether or not he will practice this spring but awesome he has made it to campus

Hard Commits
4* LB Tadarian Moultry
4* OT Austin Troxell
3* WR Noah Igbignoghene
3* S Carlito Gonzalez - could possibly list him as soft but sounds like he is good with Brown hire
3* ATH Ocatvius Matthews
3* DL Alec Jackson
3* CB Traivon Leonard
3* S Jordyn Peters
3* K Anders Carlson
3* LS Bill Taylor

Soft Commits
5* OT Calvin Ashley - Maryland threatening but publicly claims he is still firmly committed
4* RB Devan Barrett - only listing him here because he is considering official to Clemson, I think he's pretty solid
4* ATH Alaric Williams - Nebraska still pushing hard and grades are a concern

Favorites
4* DE Ryan Johnson - Might should be 50/50 with Stanford but for now will leave him here
3* OT Jordan Tucker - has yet to receive an offer
3* FB Chase Laster

50/50 Battles
4* S Devon Hunter - was once a silent commit by his own admission, now VT is the leader but we are still in the hunt
4* LB Tyler Taylor - KN has confirmed we will push for Taylor. Oklahoma biggest threat with LSU now pushing as well
3* WR Tamorrion Terry - FSU/AU battle right now but still has grade concerns

Trailing
4* DE Markaviest Bryant - UGA is trending fast but AU still holding strong in 2nd place. If he doesn't commit on visit to UGA this weekend I like our chances but it's a very good possibility he ends his recruitment this weekend
4* DE Jarez Parks - trending hard to Bama but plans to officially visit. We will see if that changes anything
4* WR Oliver Martin - Iowa & ND the favorites but has started talking to Burns and wants to visit
3* LB Thomas Johnston - We would probably become the leaders if we pushed but Taylor higher on board. He is trending Iowa right now

Longshots
5* DT Aubrey Solomon - Continues to be unclear about where we actually stand. AU will no doubt try and get him to recommit to visiting on January 20th but unless that happens probably out of this race
4* WR Henry Ruggs - We probably will get an official visit but chances are less than 1% right now, Bama, UF & FSU battle
4* S Tray Bishop - AU still trying to get him to visit. KN reports there might be split in family over AU/UGA. Bishop is close to Gus so maybe takes a visit because of that we will see but seems pretty hard commit to UGA
4* LB Markail Benton - Bama commit that I am only listing because there are rumors he wants to visit. Sounds like we won't let him right now but that could change
4* WR D.D. Bowie - Ole Miss commit scared of the NCAA hammer. Mississippi State & FSU are favorites but we might get an official visit. Once was a Bama commit
4* LB Leonard Warner - Backup plan if we miss on Taylor, once an UGA lock but they don't have room

The assumption is we will take 25 right now but that could change if more guys transfer. For now let's assume that's the case. Bill Taylor is a blueshirt so won't count until the fall which means we have 6 spots open. Here's my guess at how we finish but I expect this changes by even next week

4* S Devon Hunter - yes I'm a homer but he once was willing to commit & is close with a lot of our commits
4* DE Ryan Johnson
4* LB Tyler Taylor
4* WR Oliver Martin - I think we push and get him
3* OT Jordan Tucker
3* FB Chase Lasater

I fully admit I tend to think more positive so Hunter & Martin might be sunshine pumping but whatever. That would give us a final score of 269.13 which puts us in the 10-12 range. Commence the melting

What would the average star rating and range be if we don't get those two?

I think it will be skewed with the kicker and long snapper counted in there. I'd factor those out when calculating.

10-12 range

That is definitely best case scenario. Oliver doesn't seem too interested in playing big boy football so I think he stays up North. You already know how I feel about Hunter. Take those 2 out and replace them with two 3*s. Where does that put us?

BTW we just offered 2* CB Juanyeh Thomas. He has other offers fro FAMU, Southern Miss, and UCF. He's a 2018 kid so maybe the stock will go up.

He wants to go to FSU but hasn't received an offer from them.

Looks like rivals hasn't ranked him, which is why he is a 2* composite. He is 3* by Scout and 247 (not that it really matters this early).

Kid has a good frame. Will be interesting to see if his stock rises at all after summer camps.

Why?

ETA: Are you replying to the projected class or the 2018 kid we offered?

Fair enough, which was why I added my edit. That class finish would be less than desired for sure.

This isn't a direct response or anything but idk why anyone would expect a class any better. 8 regular season wins the past three years? I honestly don't see how we're doing this well. I know if I were a touted recruit I wouldn't want to play for Auburn right now. And that hurts me to say bc I used to be the most posi of the posi.

He's camped at FSU and didn't get an offer. Still very early though! I think he projects more of a backend DB then a CB.

He'll be 6'2 200+ by the team he gets to college.

Agreed. I could easily see him converting into a SS or even a linebacker. He is a longer strider than a quick twitch CB, but plays physical and his hudl tape he was pretty good at finding the ball from what I saw.

Just an offer at this point, but a kid to keep an eye on none the less.

Id rather have T. Terry at WR than Oliver Martin. Terry is 6'4" and a good compliment to Iggy

It appears as if our recruiting is sputtering to the finish line. The last elite recruit we have a decent shot at appears to be Johnson, and even he may sign with Stanford. Hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

Well when you lose D. Craig, Boom, Lance Thompson, and Trob.

And replace them with guys like Kodi Burns this is what you get.

Not sure why you are shitting on Kodi, very few could fill what DCraig brought. He will end up a solid recruiter and has looked solid with WR play

The bigger issue is replacing 4 top D recruiters and none staying long enough to establish themselves
