you just gotta hope you don't get hit by injuries too bad, have the ball bounce your way, get hot before the playoffs... you just never know.

That unpredictability is why the NFL has been king for so long... every year there is legitimate hope for half of the franchises in the league, that this year is "the year."

Pretty much this... more often than not, the best roster at the start of the year is not the team that ends up winning the super bowl... Between health, slumps, coaching debacles, etc... there's just so much that has to go right. It's one of the reasons I think we were all so pissed about '16. Everything went right for 16 games, all through the playoffs and one half of the super bowl and then an epic coaching debacle happened.

Would I bet money on the Falcs winning the SB this year? No... but I certainly wouldn't count them out just yet, week 1's piss poor performance not withstanding.

Bingo. It's the NFL. These teams are comprised of the absolute best football players on the planet. They train with every modern advancement known to man.

What others don't see though is, the coaching/scouting is what really separates the NFL from it's collegiate counterpart. These guys have staffers for staffers. They know every statistical tendency of your 3rd string QB since his high school 7 on 7's. Seriously. One of my buddies is a scout for the Rams and he says a part of the coaching staff's binder is a player-by-player report for the position coaches, with information that dates back to HS.

So for all of that built-up preparation, it's plausible to see and understand why the margin for error is so thin. Last year's team uninjured makes the playoffs. We don't lose those last second games to Cincinnati, Dallas, NOLA at home. But, that's the way it goes sometimes.

I guess that's why it's so thrilling... every Sunday, unless you're playing some outright atrocious team like the Dolphins, you don't know if you are going to win or lose.

As an Alabama fan, I know personally there aren't but 3 games a year that give me even momentary pause. For teams like Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma, etc... I'm sure it's the same.

That's why I'm all for an all Power 5 schedule, and an increase in conference games. People say it will "ruin" the regular season in college. No it won't. It will likely make it better. More good games on the slate. Is an undefeated season really that great if 75% of your games are glorified scrimmages?

Outside of the tailgate situation and twice-a-season showdown - give me the Birds on Sunday.

For all but a handful of teams, college football is NOT about winning national championships. It's about the week to week experience of each game. So yeah, I agree...get rid of the shite games (so I don't have to witness my team lose to the citadel again...) and expand the conference schedule. Most of us only get 12 games a year (not counting the bowl games because those are generally garbage). Time to get rid of this shite where 25% of the games are complete throwaways.

Somewhat disagree on that... If you're a power-5 team, your goal is to win your division, win your conference, get to the playoffs, win a national title.

If that isn't the case, I'd be surprised. Even if you're as downtrodden as Tennessee, you still hold your program to the standard that it should be in that conversation at least once every few years.

But to your point, the bowls are meaningless. So why not get Tech out there on the road versus Ohio State, or bring in Texas for a home game?

Going all P5 doesn't mean Georgia and Oklahoma have to run into each other 12 times a year... but at least a team like Purdue or Northwestern provides a little mystery.

didn't mean it wasn't a goal. it should be the goal of every program otherwise why play? i meant from a fan perspective, my enjoyment of the game isn't affected by championships like it is in other sports. when you are basically eliminated after 1 or 2 losses, you have to be able to take enjoyment from other aspects of the experience or you might as well stop following it.

Is anyone else concerned that we have no run game? Gonna have to take a first round back next year.

Let's not forget that the first two games this season were at Minnesota and vs. Philadelphia. Those are two truly elite run defenses.

Minnesota was the best defense at home in 2018. They led in basically every major category. Philly's D line is stockpiled with talent despite facing a couple injuries. Philly funnels other teams towards passing because their secondary is so much worse than their line.

Am I concerned? Sure, but let's see how the rushing scheme looks against an opponent that is not absolutely stacked at stopping the run.

As for the first-round RB thoughts, one concept that has only been recently explored by the Patriots is using a late first on a RB. By getting a player in the first round, you get the fifth-year team option. That way, you could potentially sign a pretty dynamic back and have him under team control for five years, not four.

Good point. We’ll see tomorrow how we fair with a middle of the road defense.

congrats to our UGA brethren on here. I certainly wasn't pulling for them but wasn't necessarily pulling for ND either. just wanted a game that matched the hype and they gave it to us.

I'm jealous of the LED lights they installed over the offseason. that was fantastic yet nauseating to watch
