If we were winning with Dedmond and Vince, I agree. But winning with JC and Trae is totally different.

Were not even guaranteed the 5th pick. Better chance, but Mavs could get lucky and get a top 5 still.

Yep and Dallas lost again. Dallas could easily go 1-7 or 0-8 over their remaining 8 too. I love that Atlanta is competitive but it's time to knock that shite off and lock up the 5th lottery position. If it was any other team but Dallas breathing down their necks for the 5th lottery position it wouldn't be that big a deal.

We already saw the Falcons go on a meaningless 3 game winning streak to end the season starting the week after they were eliminated from the playoffs and dropping like 10 spots in the draft because of it. Let's not have the Hawks repeat this exercise.

Amen...

Hawks beat the best team in the league at the buzzer. Are you fricking kidding me m
Meanwhile Dallas is pulling starters in the 4th with the lead. So frustrating

frick that. Give yourself the best chance you can for another top 10 pick. Nobody is going to remember or care about Collins and Young playing well in meaningless games down the stretch.

I guess we are going to have to rely on the basketball gods punish the Mavs for their tanking.

Dallas won too at least so we are 1.5 ahead of them

If I'm reading it correctly, the Hawks are 2.5 "ahead" of the Mavs (28-49 versus 30-46). The Hawks have 5 left and the Mavs have 6 left. Obviously if the Hawks go 1-4 over the last 5 to get to 53 losses, then even if the Mavs go 0-6 they can't "catch" the Hawks. If the Hawks go 2-3, then the Mavs could tie them with an 0-6 finish.

This... there is no value in late season wins for the Hawks at this point... Play the first half for improvement/growth, after that, just make sure everyone is on the same page. Play mediocre/bad basketball, settle for mid range jumpers and don't crash the boards... playing losing basketball is easy, and 5 games isn't enough to "build bad habits" if everyone understands what is being done.

Man trea and Zion would be amazing. fricking hawks man. I mean there’s still s chance, but would have been in better shape had they tanked. It sucks, but that’s the nba. One superstar player won’t be enough.

5/6 of the simulated lottery mock draft results I got involved Dallas getting a lottery pick and fricking us over... the 6th? We move up to first and Dallas moves back to 7th... Zion + Jaxson Hayes. I could work with that.

Mavs won last night. So they are up 3 games on the Hawks with 5 to play.

The Mavs have two of their last three against the Grizzlies who they are currently tied with for the 6th lottery spot. Should see some excellent basketball played in those games.

Remember if Dallas gets a top 5 pick then it is protected and the Hawks don't get it. If they are 6 or worse, Atlanta gets the pick.

Also remember that only the top 4 picks are really part of the lottery. The teams that don't get a top 4 pick from the lottery are then just slotted in inverse order of their record. So we need Dallas to not "win" the lottery by getting a top 4 pick and we don't need them to have the worst record of the non-lottery winning top 4 teams which would have them pick 5th.

If the season ended today Mavs would have a 34.4% chance of getting a top 4 pick and if they didn't get a top 4 they would pick 6th or 7th which would be perfect.

The perfect scenario is that Atlanta wins the lottery (currently 10.5% chance to get the number 1 pick) and Dallas gets the 6th spot. A #1 and a #6 could really accelerate the rebuild. If things played out exactly how the odds say they should Atlanta would get #5 and #6 or 7 as things stand today.

Not to mention the Hawks also have 3 picks in the top half of the second round this this year too (35, 41, 42). It's amazing how second round picks in the NBA almost seem irrelevant though.

Should be epically bad.

I think so long as Dallas doesn't get a top 5, and we do get a lottery pick, things probably won't change a ton. If we get a lottery pick, we likely end up going best available... I tend to agree with tankathon's mock predictions, which ends up with every time we get Dallas' pick in addition to our own, we take Jaxson Hayes... I suppose if someone came available at the position via trade, we might do something different there, but a legit "big" would be a welcome addition.

Wild how useless round 2 in the NBA seems to be... pure D-league fodder for the most part.

Hawks beat the 76ers.

Dallas loses to the Wolves.

Dallas up 2.5 now. Still possible for them to finish with worse record than Hawks.

Hawks are legit playing really good basketball right now. The 76ers wanted/needed to win this game and the Hawks just took it to them. While that is fun to see, stilll let’s not get carried and away and get passed up by the Mavs for the 5th lottery spot.

The future looks pretty good if the Hawks nail the 2019 draft and may get in a position to attract a super star free agent that wants to come play with Young, Collins and company? Durant? Leonard? Am I just dreaming?

Agreed. It's promising to see them *able* to do it... at some point we have to know that it's time to call off the dogs this season and let better reinforcements join.

I dunno about Durant/Leonard specifically... but it's certainly possible that a big name could look at the influx of talent and the relative difficulty of the east vs the west...

Also, re: cap room... looks like we could have as much as 60M-ish space under the cap if Bazemore opts out. 42ish if he opts in.

At 42, that's one max-type and one really solid player still if they wanted and were able to land who they want...

Out of curiosity, besides those two obvious, who are guys that we might should consider? These were just some guys that came to mind that I know are coming to FA this offseason...

SF/SG - Jimmy Butler - due to most recent CBA, articles seem to indicate there is a 100% chance he goes to free agency no matter what... doesn't mean he'll leave the 76'ers, but he hasn't been a perfect fit there either. Could command 35M+ for a 5 year deal

SG - Klay Thompson - can't imagine he hits the market... They would really have to botch that one.

C - Demarcus Cousins - he hasn't been consistently healthy but when he is, he's a force.

SF - Khris Middleton - severely underrated player IMHO... if he's going cheap-ish, this could be a really good addition if we went SG/C in the draft.

Who else?

The Hawks have clinched their pre-lottery draft position of #5.

Which would you rather draft question:

Option 1 (two top 10 picks)
Would you rather things play out how the odds have them and the Hawks get their #5 pick AND they get the Mavs 6, 7, or 8 pick?

Option 2 (one higher first round pick)
OR would you rather the Hawks get the #1 pick but also have the Mavs get a top 5 spot so the Hawks lose that pick? If you like this option would you still choose it if the Hawks just got one pick and it was #2? #3? (Remember in this scenario Hawks would still be able to get the Mavs 1st round pick next year - still protected though).

Basically is there one (or more) top guy in this draft that you would take instead of getting two top 10 picks?

For me I think I would only take option 2 if it was for the #1 pick (Zion). Otherwise I'll take the #5 plus another top 10 pick this year.

+1. If you can take Zion, I think you grab him... Otherwise, I don't know that there is a big enough difference between 2-5, and you'd rather have the second piece of the team sooner rather than later. Of course, we could also get boned... Mavs lottery into spot #1, and multiple other teams get shifted down from a bad lottery as well... meaning we get stuck with 1 pick around 8 or 9. That somehow feels much more "Hawks-like".

The Hawks season ticket people are so annoying. You have to go to the stadium to buy something?
