A caller tells the Times that employees at War Memorial Golf Course were told today the course would close in June. I’ve emailed a spokesperson for the mayor for confirmation, but don’t expect a reply this evening.

quote:

Scott told the Times last year that he’d like to see a “regional sports complex that would emphasize youth sports” at War Memorial. “I would like to see the golf course being either completely removed or going from 18 holes to 9 holes.” More recently, the mayor has said he’d like to attract a Topgolf sports bar/driving range venue to the city.

Tailgating may be in trouble.

I’ve always been surprised grass still grows there with all the piss, puke, alcohol, and semen that’s been spilled on it over the years.

I don't care what anybody says, as shitty as the stadium itself is, the tailgating there is one of the most unique and best in the country, especially when the team is good.

Lot's of older courses closing.Golf is a wealthy man's game and the price for greens fees are crazy expensive.

Fianna Hills in Fort Snort closed permanently, another example.

If you put one of those portable aluminum foil type of grills on the grass, I can guarantee you it will burn all the way down to the dirt below the sod. As in, leave about a 4" hole that's roughly the same size of the portable grill's footprint. That's what I've been told.

Bella Vista is considering closing a few courses too. Tough time for the game of golf. Those folks face some tough economics and stark demographics

I hardly ever play golf anymore. I do play some WGT on my phone though.
