If we had secondary depth, I 100% believe we’d still be saying give Odom all the money and lifetime contract
Not too sure about that. It's little more than wishful thinking to not plan on Catalon being injured at this point. Even if he wasn't injured, we still have walk-on players getting significant playing time. If he wants to stay, he needs to be told that he must quadruple his recruiting efforts.

We’re going to have to hit the portal hard again this offseason for depth on the backend. Right, wrong or indifferent, the portal is reportedly where Odom would prefer to focus as opposed to in-house development.
Catalon is likely done. I would be shocked if he comes back.
Bishop, Blair, and Gordon are all redshirt seniors. Brini is a true senior. All have the option for a COVID year if desired, and Bishop potentially can get a medical redshirt for this season. However, that’s not exactly the Legion of Boom, as most of all have consistently been huge liabilities in the secondary.
The non-seniors who’ve seen any appreciable amount of PT are Slusher, Clark, McGlothern, Chavis, both Johnsons (Jayden and Khari).
And that’s assuming we don’t lose a contributor to the portal like we did with Brooks and Foucha.

I would be willing to give Odom some slack considering the unexpected amount of injuries on defense.

I forgot about him and he was a 4* safety who would probably be playing now.

3 seasons, is the depth what it ought to be, is the recruiting on the defensive side what it ought to be with a top 5 paid DC? IDK, Asking for a friend
In all honesty, IDK what to thing other than, with middle defense in the SEC we would be at least 6/1 right now imho. Is 3 years at top 5 pay being shown enough to not want some changes?

Arkansas will never have that kind of depth and neither will 99.5% of the college football teams that play every year. There are two teams in the entire country that are equipped to handle a situation like ours and not have to sacrifice games on their schedule and even that's debatable.

Alright then. Good answer.
After looking at last season, especially the game against Ole Miss, and then looking at this season as well, knowing that Barry doesn't seem to value recruiting very much...
I have my doubts concerning his future abilities here at Arkansas, but will withhold judgement until after the season concludes.

The reservations about his recruiting my very well be founded in legitimate concern. I just can't place the performance of this secondary squarely on his shoulders given the context of the situation. Even an NFL team with 6 injuries in the secondary would get eaten alive. We're literally pulling dudes from different positions and teaching them on the fly. You can say he should recruit better but how many college teams are legitimately prepared to go 3-4 deep in multiple positions in the secondary without massive performance decrease? That's what we're having to do now. It's just an unrealistic expectation placed on Odom, IMO.
I will say I fully place the blame on him for the abysmal tackling across the entire defense, particularly in the open field. That's been bad all season.

I think tacking in college football has progressively gotten worse since targeting has been introduced. You have defenders that are hesitant to tackle at full speed and there is always a bit of hesitancy before tackling to ensure your head is nowhere near the offensive player's head. It's a shite show at the frick factory.
I loathe the targeting penalty. There is no way that an unintentional helmet to helmet should be flagged. You have players running, juking, jiving, shifting, and ducking. Sometimes a helmet to helmet is unavoidable.
I'll die on the targeting is bull shite hill.

I'm 100% with you on targeting. In many cases, the ball carrier lowers his head to meet the defender. I guess the defender is just supposed to absorb that blow with his chest or shoulder. The people who have passed and implemented that rule should have to take a few of those shots, see how they like them.
