This. Petrino pretty much conceded a loss to Bama every year, and hoped he could win out or at the worse drop one to LSU and finish up the year with a decent bowl.

You never would have heard me say this while he was here but I really think Petrino is more suited to be an OC than a HC. He could be the best and highest paid OC in the country. He's probably the best offensive playcaller in the country but that doesn't mean he should lead a whole program. There's a lot more to coaching than X's and O's. He's a shitty recruiter, an impersonable a-hole and doesn't care about defense and he has the personality of a 13lb piece of limestone. Just seems like the OC role would be perfect for him. Maybe it's a little bit of the leftover butthurt in me coming out. I don't know.

well, a lot more is known now about the internal workings of the petrino team than was public before he was fired. like, it was cool to think of him as the a-hole whom players didn't like, because you could imagine him as a drill sergeant creating a well-oiled machine. it's not as cool later when you realize players didn't like him because he was actually just an a-hole, all the time, to everyone.

i ain't even butthurt, either.

People like to go on an on about how he micro-managed every thing, down to what furniture and carpet is going into the new football operations center, their logic was that is what makes a great leader and coach.

You can not find me a successful leader of a large cooperation or business who runs said business that way.

Then on the other hand, the same people would throw Willy Rob under the bus for "his" defense under the bus, if Petrino was micro-managing down to the furniture, do you really think he was allowing something as large as the defense to go on without him having some sort of influence and control over it?

So yes, in that sense, he is one of those guys who would be better suited to be a 1.5 mil a year OC or be a NFL OC, someone who you would pay to stay off the recruiting trail, someone who could lock himself in his office and focus solely on X's and O's...

Willy had to use Petrino's defensive playbook. ICYAW

If you saw the WKU spring practice presser you laughed like I did.

$2 mil to be OC at Texas, LSU, UGA, UT, Washington, Clemson, FSU, etc would be a lot better than wherever the WKU campus is.

I wonder what that type of money Kentucky 811 is paying for that type of exposure???

Looks like a bed sheet thrown on a wall, with a petrino sitting on a milk crate in front of it.

Hog DB article on Coach B's Saline County appearance last night

This part was interesting:

quote:

Coach plans to slowly change the athlete type at Arkansas from what he called the “pretty speed guys” that the last regime was in love with  to “big ugly’s”  who will fit a power attack similar to the style of what he put on the field at Wisconsin.

Dunno, but looks like he is finally getting to wear plenty of black.

It could be because I grew up playing in the Wishbone and the I but I'm stoked to see some big road grading offensive linemen in here. Wisconsin always has massive guys on the line. It will be nice to see them start to land some of those types.

And moar fullbacks!

awesome. just fricking awesome. Big road graters up front with speed and athleticism on the back end.... sounds to me a lot like bama and LSU's recipe for success. Also doesn't arkansas produce more of this style of player than say the spread player. I know up north here they use the spread almost exclusively( thanks gus) but down south don't they still play a lot of smash mouth football?

I think it will definitely lead to more instate OL and TE's getting offered. Take Josiah Wymer, TE for Springdale, for example. No way would he have been recruited by Petrino but he definitely has a shot with Bielema depending on how his senior season goes this fall. Especially if we take 3 TE's like some are suspecting that we will do.

in my arkansas experiences I've seen a lot more corn fed huge kids than skinny fast kids.

Run is where it's at in smaller classes, just look at Kenneth Dixon, who wasn't good enough for Petrino.

I hope Coach B gets over the "small classification" syndrome some coaches have.

Yes and No.

Several of the schools around the state run the spread offense, but this doesn't mean they produce high caliber FBS talent on a yearly basis.

The state has a couple good classes with QBs and WRs but that was the exception. Generally the state produces linemen, TEs, and RBs with the occasional TE or QB. This would fit more into what CBB wants to do versus a spread offense that relies on the skill positions first.

On defense, the state tends to produce more big bodies for the lines, LB prospects, with the occasional DB. The problem here is the best ATHs end up on the offensive side for just about every school.

Then comes the argument that the spread is a equalizer for a lack of talent, if that was true you would see schools that can get talent running the spread or elite talent in the spread would mean these schools couldn't be stopped and that hasn't the case the case either. The spread, especially the HUNH version has been exposing the defenses of those teams and it becomes like basketball where if a team won't play their game and control the tempo of the game to their tempo, they do not have the advantage if they can not outscore their opponent. Oregon vs SEC, Big12 vs SEC as examples.
