If you think he was some kind of elite coach

I’m not going back and forth with you all day. Your telling of Hog history does absolutely nothing for your believability to me. I know what Nolan had and had not accomplished. Scat, rat.

Nolan Richardson is certainly an elite coach. He has won multiple titles. Not just the 94 team, but he was a winner everywhere he went. How rare is it that you see a team to to the title game two years in a row? That's extremely hard to do no matter how good your roster looks. There's 64 teams in that tournament. It's a crapshoot. Unless you're an elite coach/team. Like Vilanova. Or the 94-96 Hogs.

Dude. Try reading the effing thread.

I said he was not elite WHEN WE HIRED HIM. He was a "decent" coach at Tulsa and Frank gave him a chance. It worked out for us luckily

Didn't he win his juco national title before he got here?

Yep. 1980.

And some guy named Todd Franklin won it this year. Would you recommend we hire him?

Maybe. Haven't looked at him closely. Because I'm not an Athletic Director. If I were an athletic director I could give you a much better answer.

You also said this

quote:

He happened to be here when the best group of players to ever come through the state were here

Which means you don’t know what the hell you are talking about.

So Corliss wasn't the best player that's come through the state?

You could argue for Joe Johnson I guess, but other than that Id be interested to see who you think is better

You said best group of players. Who else from Arkansas during Nolan’s run was a difference maker? Mayberry, Miller, Day, Beck, Thurman, McDaniel, And Williamson were the major players during his run. One was from Arkansas.

There is far more talent coming out of the state now than there was then.

Barely.

Nolan was getting "better" players from NY, Cali, TX etc.

The instate talent was banding together at OM to become a thorn in Nolan's side.

IMO you need to look at basketball recruiting same as football. I know people say Arkansas produces good basketball talent, but Texas still produces a shitload more. At the end of the day it's the same numbers game.

Getting coaches out of Texas is smart business for Arkansas athletics.

No, you need to look at what is actually being recruited in basketball.

It doesn't really matter where the 4 year role player comes from, the fans may give the edge to the instate guy, but if the out of state guy who takes "his spot" has better height, handles, shot, etc to fill the role you need did you really "miss" on the instate guy no matter where he ends up? Probably not.

There are very few program changers in any given year, even this there is a game that has all of the top players in the country on the court at the same time, from this small group you rarely see more than 2 that are head and shoulders above the rest.

So, you can sign as many of this small elite talent group each year and roll the ball on the court in hopes of out talenting your competition or you can sign the role players to fill their roll on your team.

Every one here is clamoring for the role player recruiters whether they realize it or not.
