His recruiting may actually help because he is a houselhold name in the south with lots of connections. That's the biggest benefit of having 20 plus sec experience

The people that were throwing a hissy fit the second his name was mentioned are the only people that overlooked this.

The proof will be in the pudding. I've never heard anything definitive on whether Chavis is an asset or a detriment to recruiting. All we know at this point is that he has a reputation as a lazy recruiter with fans at his previous jobs.

We should know from experience that the truth probably lies somewhere in between. If we start landing defensive recruits we weren't able to before, I'll be more than happy to admit that I was wrong.

Chavis is going to do a really good job for us, retire in a few years and leave the defense in great shape.

We didn't over look anything. We know who he is. Just because he is a house hold name in the South, doesn't mean we will get 5* recruits from him being here.

I hope it does benefit us though. We need something better than what we had and if Chavis works out, then good on CM.

He will leave our defense in better shape than he found it.

That's all I want.

I think that is what "us Chavis haters" want as well.

It isn't about doubting his resume. It is more so wanting a energetic defensive coach who will be out there with the players leading by example.

Its frustrating seeing him in a booth while getting whooped while coaching for a team that has more talent.

Same could be said about Bert. He was out there, but when a coach doesn't hold himself to a weight standard, it gives players a lax mentality.

Someone will come along and tell me I'm wrong, but in a leadership position, you lead by example.

I like to think he's up there in the booth all sleepy eyed, because if he was down there in the trenches he would be too prone to choking a kid out after screwing up defensively. That's what I like to think, especially now that he's our coach.

So, how would you guys rate all the position coaches along with Chavis? Did we upgrade, at least on paper, or did we just change names?

I'm 100% certain Caldwell will be a major improvement for our defense.

Is that exciting to you Troy?

I love my hound, but I don't want that for our coaches appearance

Certainly not, that's why I posted the picture. I'm pinning my hopes on the fact that our defense can't be much worse than it has been the last few years. Maybe with a little bit of success in a year or two, Morris will be able to go out and get that high energy, highly motivated DC that he promised.

One thing about Chavis, his ceiling is very high. If by some miracle all the pieces fall in place here, we could be among the best defenses in the country. I think it's highly unlikely, but there is a slim chance.

Seems like our defensive backs and safeties were improving some. Hope that continues. We had a run there where all a team had to do was chunk it up, either it was 6, or our dbacks would get called for PI.

Who is coaching the secondary?

Cooper's bio sounds really good. Never was a Honey Badger fan, but a coach being able to foster a kid that isn't your prototypical defensive back all the way to The NFL sounds good.

Sounds like Smith is really a recruiter, which is fine by me. As we've said here a million times, a 10 yard cushion when the offense only needs 4 for the first will be a huge improvement.
