So Jack Crowe actually had the decency to quit after the Citadel loss? I've always remembered this dark day resulting in his firing. Anybody recall it more clearly?

Jack Crowe didn't quit, JFB told him to GTFO.
Long and short of the story.
RIP JFB

Crowe really was a good OC. Head coach? Not so much. He wasn't ready, he should never have taken the job. Hindsight is 20-20.

That's what the article said so thought I'd pose it to the experts here on SEC Rant. I recall he was fired.
So shoot me.
So shoot me.

He should've never been offered the job in the first place when Hatfield left for Clemson.
Broyles should've abided by Barnhill's edict (and one he deeply ascribed to) and shied away away from hiring or promoting an assistant to the head coaching job.
One wonders how differently our SEC transitionlake would've gone if we'd replaced Hatfield with an experienced coach instead of a career coordinator who was learning on the job.
ETA -- I've never seen it discussed, but wonder why didn't we consider Barry Switzer after Hatfield left? He stepped down from OU after the 1988 season, and Hatfield departed a year later after the 1989 season. Switzer was out of football until being hired as coach of the Cowboys in 1994.

Wasn't he surrounded by scandal when he left the Sooners?

There was a lot of smoke and a few flames. We weren't going in that direction at all...

Technically Crowe had previous HC experience, after Crowe Frank restricted this to only D1-A (now FBS) experience. This was why Nutt left Murray State to go to Boise he "gained" D-1 experience as they were transitioning to the FBS level, allegedly.
The story I always heard was Crowe was fired as soon as the clock struck 0:00 on the field, before he could make it back to the locker room.

Crowe had the most low budget coaches show ever. Would draw the plays out on a dry erase board.

Crowe didn't make 4mil/year like fat arse
Back in the day you could hire and fire at will.
Nowadays AD's put a price on he coaches head, it's wrong on every level

Crowe really was a good OC.
Pat Washington
Bo Jackson
Reggie Ware
Tommie Agee
Collis Campbell
He may have been a good OC but who won't with that kind of talent to work with.

He was a solid OC here at Arkansas as well. He just turned out to be in way over his head as Arkansas head coach.
The problem is that the Hatfield/Broyles feud had gotten so toxic that Hatfield bolted for Clemson without warning.
It caught Broyles flatfooted and he wound up sticking Crowe in there much like John L. Smith got the emergency coaching job when Petrino had his little accident. And like John L. it was a complete disaster.
Eerie parallels between now and then. A successful HC leaves under painful circumstances late and are replaced by someone way over their head. Followed by years of poor to mediocre play.

Other parallels are scary too-Crowe lost to the Citadel, Smith to ULM, & Bert to Toledo.

What is really scary is... Crowe was the emergency coach and got shite canned early. The long term replacement was Danny Ford, a coach with a big time pedigree... who had a losing record for us and seemed disinterested and lazy the entire time he was here.
Anyone getting Deja Vu here?
