Houston Nutt's worst play call

I decided to rewatch the 2006 LSU game the other day. I was in WMS for this game and don't think I ever rewatched it, other than the 80 yard Dmac run. For an unbiased spectator, this is a hell of a game to watch. Pretty close game throughout and the 4th quarter feels like one big sequence of big play after big play.
I had distinctly remembered the atrocious play calling during our last possession. Throwing it 4 times and using up Mcfadden on a deep route that Dick had no chance of getting to him.
That was bad, but it probably never happens if the worst call of Nutt's career doesn't happen. 4th and 3, down 12-17 in the 4th quarter. We had driven down to LSU's 26 yard line. At this point, Felix had rushed for over 100 yards, and Mcfadden was getting close. Dick had completed something like 3 of 13 passes.
So, the obvious choice is to give it to Casey Dick. Dmac is kept in the backfield as a blocker (no blitz comes and he basically just stands there for the entire play). Amazingly, LSU managed to cover the one guy with hands on the team (Monk) and the play breaks down.
Watch here
If we kept the ball in McFadden's hands here - Hand it to him, let him throw, whatever, and kept Jones on the field, there's gotta be at least a 70% chance we get that first down. I don't believe they would've kept us out of the endzone. Most likely, we win this game with a reasonable play call.

That was a bad one. But there is such a rich bounty of bad calls by Nutt to choose from.

Was Nutt the OC?

Common belief is that Nutt took over play calling in the middle of the season. Regardless, I'd be shocked if he wasn't heavily involved in deciding the play call on a crucial 4th down

Nutt's big problem, and it was a big problem, is that he had a very annoying tendency to be ultra-safe when he should have rolled the dice... and then rolling the dice when he should have been nice and safe.
Don't get me wrong. He was a far better SEC Head Coach than Bert or Chad. Nutt just had some kinks in his armor. Like his teams coming out flat as a pancake about two or three times a year.

At least he would beat the pancakes, something Bert and Chad had problems with somehow.

San Jose State on the other hand is a whole different type of fish stink. Or worse - losing to Western Kentucky who was led by a former QB.

Wasn't it against vandy he split goal line carries 4 times up the gut to 2 guys not names Felix Jones or Darren McFadden?

I can't remember if he did that or not, but I do know that McFadden had only 1 touch in that game.

That man could snatch defeat from the jaws of victory better than anyone I can remember

His teams always played for him, which is also more than you could say for Bert/Chad.

His teams always played for him... in those few games he stressed were important. There is no great shortage of games where Arkansas laid down and died with Nutt as the head coach.
Again... was he better than Bert and Chad? Hell yes. That is not a particularly high hurdle to clear though.

Peyton Hillis against vandy in 05 I was at the game. 4 tries between the tackles from the two.
