Alright, so forgetting all the obvious references to North Korea and China in relation to walling the state off to outsiders, I was wondering if we could compile a list of good coaches with Arkansas ties.

I'll just throw in the ones I can figure off the top of my head and hopefully folks can add to the list.

1. Malzahn
2. Strong
3. Gundy (tied to the state through his bitchin hairdo he has named "The Arkansas Waterfall") son is a student
4. Norvell
5. Fuente (??) Dunno if this would be considered tied to the state. Worked most his career right on the borders.
6. Venables
7. Kiffin

^ that's about all I can come up with as far as potential candidates who are both good at their job and connected to The People's Republic of Arkansas. Anyone got more?

ETA:

8. Holtz

Gundy’s son is currently a student at Arkansas so you can add that as a tie.

Would Arkansas fans actually accept Gus?

Seems like not long ago everyone universally agreed he'd be a terrible hire.

Throw Skip Holtz on there if you’re just talking about Arkansas ties.

The problem with Gus is that there is already a large contingent of fans that can't stand the guy. I mean, he is good at his job, but he won't have much grace with the fans if he doesn't win.

I can't see it happening honestly. But then again, I'm not one of the commies calling the shots.

Good point.
And I'm not convinced that Skip would be a bad hire. I think there are better options available, but I'm pretty sure he is a better coach than Bielema.

I'm a better coach that BB. Put my name on the list.

Seems fairly split, winning would solve any issues. Definitely wouldn't be my first choice.

I really don't have anything against Gus other than him taking some good players from Arkansas to Auburn. I would really like us to go younger in this coaching search.

Ignoring the "job x >>> job y" arguments, I don't see why Gus would jump for Arkansas right now

-Booster/Fan support isn't much better (considering he isn't universally loved)
-Arkansas probably doesn't "outbid" Auburn by massive amount
-Current roster talent adv AU
-AU recruiting advantages (Gus isn't a great recruiter)
-UGA win likely bought Gus 2 more seasons at AU I'd guess

Before the UGA win, I could see him taking this as a parachute out. I just don't think he needs a parachute right now and don't see this specific situation being better than AU

I think this right here should be a heavy consideration in regards to who we hire next.

Arkansas has a lot of talent on its roster -- it just isn't being utilized properly, IMO.

We need to hire someone who can take this current roster and win games. A lot of games at that.

One guy I can think of who has proven himself able to do that is Matt Campbell. But he isn't "everything Arkansas."

I swear to god this place is ran by morons.

If he comes here, the biggest reason imo would just the be coming home thing. That is insanely hard to judge.

Please spread this around more. Posters have said they believe he would come in and get top 15 classes here.

And on the other hand their would likely be less rumors/interest had he lost to UGA. Some would want him regardless.

He isn't the very bottom of my list but not close to the top of semi realistic candidates.

If the powers that be are really interested in winning this is the guy they throw the bank at. Young great coach that will do something for awhile and make some program very happy.

The difference between Arkansas vs AU/Bama/UGA type talent is that Arkansas can't afford injuries, has weak spots and doesn't have the depth.

The extra depth is a huge factor both in game and keeping key players fresh/healthy throughout the year.

It depends on the staff, he has got extremely lucky at AU with good recruiting assistants w/ AU ties (Garner, DCraig, TRob, TWilliams and even Kodi Burns). I don't know if Gus on his own can attract the good recruiters to his staff needed to be a good recruiter

I'd expect 20-25 type classes with occasional 15-20 maybe 10-15 class w/ good instate year. Gus does understand the value of recruiting, he just isn't going to bring much himself and his program's culture isn't "cool" / helping either.

His daughters both went to AU, Good ol' Kristi is really tapped into the Jesus.Auburn.Net + he has lived in Auburn for some 8/9 years. I get the pull "home" but his time in Auburn is getting close to his total time in Springdale/NW Arkansas where he hasn't lived in a decade.

Who knows how he feels about that though, but I just don't know if that would be viewed as a pull rather than soft landing situation
