I keep hearing about Briles and Odom, but can we talk about Scott Fountain for a minute?

What did his special teams do yesterday?

-missed a potential game winning mid range field goal
-Killed the field position battle with almost every punt
- muffed a punt that was lucky to not end with a turnover

Those 25 yard punts are basically as bad as interceptions.

When’s the last time we had a big punt or kick return vs an SEC team?

Fountain has a pretty bad reputation from everywhere he’s coached. This is the one coordinator I feel like we can definitely get rid of and improve immediately

Said this on a different board.

Briles and Odom both had bed shitting moments, but Fountain has been our worst coordinator.

His handling of the punting situation is profoundly stupid. He has a punter who averaged 43 ypp for a 9 win team riding the pine in favor of an Aussie who's averaging 37 ypp, can't boom it, and ranks 70th out of 74 eligible punters in the nation in punting average.

Fletcher's inability to flip the field is a defensive liability.

Special teams blunders are an indicator of bad or a mediocre team.

For all their flaws, Odom and Briles both bring something to the table

I’d prefer to let an unpaid grad assistant run the special teams than keep Fountain around at this point

I'm fine with the rolling rugby style punt... if they can kick the shite out of the ball. The guy we got punting can't do that. Put him on the bench and lets see if he's got a little more oomph to his kicks next year.

I'm not a fan of Fountain as a whole. Our kicking game is objectively worse than it was last year. While we have break away speed returning punts and kickoffs we've had some muffed catches that really put us behind the 8 ball. We just look off as a position group on Special Teams.

With out march through Hell schedule this year we can't afford to flub special teams.

Well yeah I think it’s just generally understood that Scott Fountain sucks. Not much to debate there. We’ve been losing the field position battle with punting for his entire tenure.

Yep. Aussies are supposed to be able to boom punts. Fletcher can’t punt it more than 35 yards. Meanwhile we have a battle tested punter who was objectively better last year by every appreciable statistic.

It’s maddening.

We’re 122/131 in net punting. If we were completely average the overall impact on our field position would be an improvement of 121 yards through 4 games.

Last year we only lost about 60 yards punting over the course of the season. 2020 was a disaster though when we lost 161 yards punting.

I don’t know if CSP and Scott Fountain are buddies or what but the guy is costing us an average of 13 yards/game in field position since he’s been here. I’m not sure why it’s acceptable.
