Briles called a hell of a game today

For the record, I've been a huge critic of Briles the last two years and his cute, no rhythm, drive-killing bullshite this season, but he absolutely called a hell of a game today.

His playcalling had rhythm. He didn't get cute. He didn't look lost. He didn't kill any promising drives with dumb playcalls. He didn't have any glaring "WTF?" moments where you wonder if he was concussed. He put KJ in good situations. He fed Rocket (though he got away from it for a while). His was good in the red zone, which has been an area we've routinely not pissed a drop this year.

He earned his pay today, and we won this game because of him.

Let's build off this win, get healthy(er) in the bye week, and finish strong.

Yeah. I’ve not been a huge briles fan but this was the first time he didn’t get in his own way. That was the best game he’s called since he’s been here.

Have to agree. Briles fixed almost every criticism I’ve had of him in this game. I hope this wasn’t a fluke.

I am a Briles apologist, and I believe this is the first time he has had a QB do what he wanted. Stand in the pocket and move through progressions. KJ after being rattled wasn’t to apt to run head first in again this week, until there really was no reason to do so.

I think this is how his offense was supposed to look. You can say it’s because we outsized them. But we did that to Missouri State, Cincinnati and even Rice last year.

My biggest complaint has been trickery turning drives to shite with a quickness and lack of proper play calls inside the 20.

Both were better today. Two games in a row will actually make it a streak. Let’s see where it takes us.

He did all that, he was just successful at it this week.

Well yea, he was up against a big 12 caliber defense, if not worse.

Eh, not really.

We didn’t see a double pass.
We didn’t see a reverse.
He cut way down on the volume of pre-snap motion (which led to a ton of illegal motion penalties).
We didn’t tighten up in the red zone and piss our pants (save for the last drive, which doesn’t count because it was in the final minute of a blowout).
We didn’t see any trick plays in the opponent’s territory.

Didn’t we see a hazelwood reverse?

Not that I recall, but I could be wrong.

Yes we did. We saw sweeps. We saw it all but the double pass.

In the Pittman post game interview, he said he told Briles to open it up this week. Which mean, has told Briles to slow it down and keep it small previously.

We threw downfield more yesterday than we have all season. KJ’s eye level stayed downfield even in a collapsing pocket. Landers’s slant & go route TD was a thing of beauty.

Hopefully Briles keeps pushing the ball downfield.

It was the best game he's called all year. It'll be interesting to see if it continues against Auburn.
