FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — No more. Not again. Never longer.
Time to hit the reset button at Arkansas. Not just the Arkansas football team. The Arkansas athletic department.
Saturday was, for all intents and purposes, the most embarrassing win in modern Razorbacks football.
That’s the absolute best thing that can be said about Saturday. Arkansas rallied to beat Coastal Carolina, 39-38, in front of a half-empty Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium on homecoming.
That’s Coastal Carolina, in its first year of FBS football up from FCS.
Coastal Carolina, which didn’t even have a football program 15 years ago.
Coastal Carolina, the would-be harbinger of the end of the Bret Bielema/Jeff Long era at Arkansas.
There is a reason the stadium was rather bare. Arkansas was 3-5 entering the game. The calls for Bielema’s job ceased being made by only the “crazies” several weeks ago. Now, it seems, the only crazy line of thinking is if someone thinks Bielema should definitely get another year.
What’s more is the revelation about the top of the athletic department. The Associated Press’ Kurt Voigt asked for comment from Long, the Arkansas athletic director, a couple weeks ago. Voigt said he was told that expecting a comment was “arrogant.”
Long, allegedly, sent an email to one of his lieutenants, Chris Freet, the senior associate athletic director for external operations and strategic communications. The email had just one word of text in the body: “Advice?”
The question about which Long was seeking advice from Freet was how to handle a harmless query from a media member. While Voigt isn’t with ESPN or SEC Network, The Associated Press is the most recognized and respected news organization in the world (disclosure: I am a former AP employee).
Calling Voigt’s request “arrogant” is appropriately ironic.
The back-room whispers and private conversations among the six-figure crowd in athletic departments has always been unfit for public ears. There are reasons a lot of such talk is never made public. The fear, however, of any outside questioning is paranoid to the point of delusion. Circling the wagons in a time of crisis is cowardly.
Arkansas finds itself in an untenable position. Fans are fed up with the coach. They tire more and more every week of Long. If the email and Voigt’s assertion are true — and there is zero reason to believe otherwise — Arkansas needs to be gutted from the top down.
Now, the almighty dollar may preclude that from happening. Long and Co. have been at the helm during the most financially successful time in SEC history. They bring in major bucks. They also have improved the academic standing of Razorbacks athletics.
Disdain, however, for the fan base, the media and anyone who questions the Arkansas athletic department’s omnipotence, is beyond the pale. Take the criticism, Arkansas. It comes so rarely that occasional bouts should not elicit such a haughty response.
“We don’t really bring the outside world in our program,” Bielema said after the win Saturday.
He was talking about how he keeps players positive when fans are increasingly negative. Coincidental that quote would apply to the athletic department’s interactions with the media, too.
Bielema is not the root problem here. Actually, this is only barely about him at all. The culture is the problem. Perhaps Bielema is a product of that culture. Any arguments stating as much, I won’t dispute. Nor will I defend his 29-31 record in four-plus seasons.
Time and time again I have done so. Time and time I again have gone on the record — in columns, in Hogs for Breakfast and elsewhere — as saying the Razorbacks athletics administration was positive for Arkansas the university and Arkansas sports overall.
I renege.
Something stinks.
It isn’t everyone. It isn’t everything. But angry phone calls, emails and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests are back.
Arkansas basketball may be good this year. Arkansas baseball certainly will be. Track and field and cross country are dominant. But Arkansas, like a lot of other places, is college football. And between the on-field product and the off-field conceit, it’s time.
Time for Arkansas to start over.

Here we go- heading into Houston Nutt era territory now and Kurt Voigt is there whiffing the flames on the sideline. It’s like deja vu.

Truthfully, I kinda disapprove of Chris Freet there more than Long and I’m not the biggest Long fan in the world.

I’m not a big fan of leakers I guess. And I too ask for advice at work when I’m in a situation that I’ve not had much experience in before.

Well, if this is the worst evidence of wrong doing we can find in our Athletic Department I hate to say it, but I think I can live with an email asking for advice on how to respond to a media question.

I mean its a lovely mountain to make out of a perfectly good mole hill and all... but its not like Long revealed a secret fund raising plan of selling dope to children while disguised as a nun.

There are a great many things related to the football program we can complain about but this seems like someone wanted to have a rant and went looking for an excuse to have one.

Which is odd because God knows its not hard to find something worthy of a good rant right now.

As to shite canning Long because he won't fire Bielema during the season... well the Florida game this weekend proved that isn't a cure all.

We have three games left. If Bielema is still the coach after the season is over and is being brought back next year, by all means, lets start baying for Long's blood. I'll happily be waving my pitchfork and torch alongside the rest of you.

Look at the email, who it was sent to, in what regards, and what the recipient's job description is...

Subject: AP Request for comment on Coach Bielema's future.

Body: Advice?

To: Chris Freet, the senior associate athletic director for external operations and strategic communications.

So the mountain is trying to formed out of Long asking for advice on answering the question of Bert's future in the media mole hill.

Long has already been through the backlash of the vote of confidence for Pel while planning the firing before allowing him to coach that bust of a "top 5" class by some, why there was backlash? No idea Pel was in way over his head.

Basically the media is going to jump on the bandwagon and claim they had a hand in ousting Bert, like they did after Nutt's dismissal, with some of these guys trying to use this as proof of their hard hitting reporting to parlay jobs in bigger media markets (more pay for them).

The only interesting thing from this article will be how Long is instructed to best answer this question in the coming weeks as it will often be asked by local, state, and national media. Obviously it isn't as simple as "Bert is our guy going forward" or he wouldn't need advice in the matter... It is also never a good idea to let everyone know the coach will be fired after the Mizzou game, serves no purpose and only fans the flame...

1. Eric Bolin is a frickin jackass.
2. Jeff Long is right to ask this dude for advice. It's dude's job to manage media relations.
3. Best advice that can be given to Long at this point is to fire Bielema.

I'm impressed.

You're seeking people to be angry at Jeff Long for DOING HIS frickING JOB.

It's like you have no idea how the world works and are too wrapped up in your own opinions to realize that other people exist.

Some of you may not like him, but at least he has the balls to start calling out the UofA. I think I said a while back that Eric would be our best bet at getting the media swayed against Bret, and here we go.

I know a lot of you don't like him, but he writes without his heart involved. So many of our state media members grew up in this state and they freak out at the thought of not being able to cover anything Razorback, which is why many will toe the line.

Agree. Nothing really earth shattering with the pic. I think it was put on twitter by Voigt, an AP writer in state.

Also agree. I think Long is of the thought that he wants to get as many wins as possible this season.

We saw this weekend was happens to a team that has lost their head coach during the season(Florida)and they know none of the current staff will likely be back next season.

If Long keeps his mouth shut right now, he can maybe avoid a situation like Florida. I don't know if Florida wins another game to be honest. They very well could lose to an already bowl eligible UAB team in two weeks. They'll finish 3-8 on the season IMO.

I agree it's somewhat refreshing to see someone in the media who doesn't pull punches. I just think the guy is a jackass.

That "win" yesterday was actually good for the program. It was the perfect outcome. Won the game, but made it glaringly obvious this team is coached by a bunch of idiots.

We had a six yard punt, guys.

Bo isn't as bad as people claim he is.
He has been on the anti-Bielema train ever since the Carolina loss. Openly laughing at the state of our program.

It's just that he stops just short of calling Bielema a bum and everyone wants to hear him call Bielema a bum. Unfortunately that's just not how it works.

Not just the Arkansas football team. The Arkansas athletic department.

I don't see how this is a call for Jeff to be fired. our buyout is more reasonable than most thought. resume wise Bielema looked great 5 years ago. he's improved the position of the program from Perino meltdown.

basketball and baseball looking strong. athletic department looks more respectable now on a national level. he's not down in the mud on this coaching situation we shouldn't make a move before season end.
