First I will preface by saying I did like CMA, but I did also see the need to make the change.

So about our offense. CMA really relied heavily on pure motion offense. While he did have sets (yes we did have a few sets) he is about 90% free motion and 10% sets. This kind of offense would thrive with experienced scoring guards (Macon/Barford/Beard) and would sputter with younger guys (Harris/Joe/Jones). The times we would run sets we weren’t the best at executing them and once it didn’t work we would panic and default into ISO ball. This worked better when you have good isolation players like Macon/Barford and would look like junior high girls basketball when you had guys that couldn’t beat their guy off the dribble like this last year. The common saying that Mike would just “Roll the balls out and let them play” is sorta true but also sorta unfair. There was definitely scheming involved, but sometime that scheme was lacklusterly executed. I will say I was not a fan of the high pick and roll for almost every end of game situation. Great with Macon/Gafford. Bad with Harris/Gafford.

One of my biggest frustrations with watching Mike's (and Nolan's) teams was the seeming lack of preparation for "situations", such as inbound on baseline with little time on the shot clock, last possession, defending the aforementioned situations, etc. Is my perception that very little time was spent on these situations correct?

You would be correct.

So pretty much what most of us thought. Next to zero time spent on scheming/set plays and situational awareness. Just put a bunch of athletes out there and hope they win.

From the one practice of Muss’ I went to he drives a hard ship. The practices are tough. He is super detail oriented. I am excited for this next year.
