Tennessee will probably win 14-5 or something like that tomorrow. It’s what they’ve been doing pretty consistently this season — lose games 1 and 2 and turn into the ‘27 Yankees in a meaningless game 3.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Diamond Hog freshman’s nuts drop faster than Gage Wood’s have this season. He was a train wreck his first time out and he’s grown into a consistent 9 out save guy. His development has been incredible.
I agree. He’s earned the right to close a Friday night game.
Hollan and Smith are elite starters. If wood and tygart can be elite bullpen arms we are as good as anyone in college baseball.
McEntire/Carter/Adcock are all decent and give us the depth needed in the postseason.

Couple of insights from this weekend so far.
The Good:
Pitching -- for all its woes this season, pitching has been pretty good the last two weekend series. We've given up 3, 2, 4, 7, and 2 runs in our last 5 conference games. Tennessee is 5th in the country in homers, so it's not like they're weak sisters. We've made hay in the first 2 games of this series with Hollan, Hagen, Mac, and Wood so it'll be interesting to see how the bullpen does today, but they came through last Sunday.
Fielding -- for the most part, the team seems to have flushed and cleaned up (mostly) the early season defensive woes. Bolton has been fairly sure-gloved this series, which is a welcome change. Diggs is not an everyday outfielder and should be permanent DH when Wegner is back, so I'm not going to ding the team for his issues in RF.
The Bad:
Hitting -- bats have been pretty quiet this series. We had 2 hits until the 7th last night and only finished with 4. Also, I'm a broken record here, but Rowland and Bolton are still gaping holes at the bottom of the order, and they're a combined 0 for 13 with 6 K's in this series. Good to see Bolton reach base twice last night by virtue of a walk and a HBP, but he's still 3-34 with 16 strikeouts and 1 for his last 25 in SEC games.

Soooo Wegner out 3-4 weeks per DVH in last night’s presser?

Not great from a fielding standpoint since Diggs is a liability in the outfield. But it does give us a chance to give DH AB’s to guys like Holt, Robinett, McLaughlin, et al.
However, gives us a chance to get Wegner back at a time we’re going into the S. Carolina (4 weeks) and Vandy (5 weeks) series, and we’ll get him fresh headed into the postseason.
We have Georgia, A&M, and Mississippi State in that stretch, which should be somewhat manageable.

Which goes to show how things can turn on a dime when it comes to baseball. A couple of weeks ago I'd have told you our pitching is a major concern but our hitting should give us a puncher's chance against anyone.

Pitching is always going to be more consistent than hitting, and pitching and defense can’t go cold on you. That being said if you have a team full of guys that can’t hit at all they aren’t going to magically figure it out in the post season and it won’t matter how good the staff is if you can’t score (looking at you 2012 squad).

This is my fear with Rowland and Bolton, and one of the key reasons why I think we need to spend the next few weekend series giving Holt, Coll, and Jones a shot at SS.
We can’t have 2 automatic outs in the lineup in a stretch run, and it’s gotten to the point where Bolton’s ability to reach base is solely reliant on the pitcher’s ability to locate since he never gets on base on weekends unless he draws a walk or gets a HBP. In SEC games, Bolton is batting .088 and slugging .118. That’s a level of offensive futility and inability to get the ball out of the infield that I’m not sure I’ve ever seen before.

No changes in the Sunday lineup:

We'll need to put a lot of runs on the board if we wanna sweep.

Do you mean good enough to win the Natty? Or good enough to do well in the post season? Because that 2012 team was a Perry Costello fix job away from making the CWS Finals…
