2020 Razorback Track Thread Nationals Cancelled

*Mar 12 2020*
NCAAs start today. Nothing really new to report as the qualifiers are the same. Women are long shots and the men are simply no longer in the hunt IMO due to the absence of a deep distance team this year.
Bucknam is named SEC coach of the year and South Central Region coach of the year. Harter is named SEC coach of the year.
Griffith is named SEC runner of the year for the men.
Izzo is named SEC runner of the year for the women.

Detailed Awards List
*Mar 1 2020*
Both teams lose qualifiers after the conference championships.
Men end up with 8 qualifiers for the national meet and the women 10 (Izzo represents 3 of those slots, Viljoen 2).
My updated prediction is that the Arkansas men finish 8th and the Arkansas women finish 4th.
*Feb 28 2020*
Day 1 Results
10th ranked Men and 3rd ranked Women will compete this weekend for bragging rights. The men have four SEC teams ranked above them in the poll but as far as team finishes go, I expect them third. I do believe the men have an outside chance to take the crown if the Mid-Long Distance crew shows up.
Dogfight coming up for the women. With LSU and Georgia ahead of them so far this year in the rankings. I expect them to finish 2nd behind LSU this weekend. Still, not a long shot to win it though like the men are.
Schedule
You should be able to watch on SEC Network + I'll post if it's on the SEC Network or other main cable channel.
*Feb 18 2020*
On the backs of strong hurtles and sprint performances, the Men's squad makes a big leap up to 11th in the week four rankings. Griffith put in an elite performance in the 3000 and Boit is still MIA. This team is officially dark horse contenders.
The women had big performances distance wise and remain in the hunt at number 3 despite of having little experience in the sprints. Top to bottom I can't remember the last time the Ladybacks were this strong in the distance events. If Werner doesn't red-shirt the outdoor season, the Ladybacks are contenders without a single sprinter qualifying for Nationals.

Men and women split squads. Men's distance runners did well in Washington and at home with the sprinters being the more impressive of the squads for a nice change of pace. I think there were a lot of times that will hold up come national qualifying time. This team may have a chance at a top 5 finish if the stars align. I am worried about Boit, his performance has fallen off a cliff since the DNF in the 3000 2 weeks ago.
The women's sprint team is practically non-existent this season but there were solid performances in the mid and long distances. Katie Izzo and Viljoen both went sub 9 in the 3000 which is a very big deal especially after both running 4:35 in the mile the day before. Krissy Gear put in a 4:36 in the mile as all three came in 4,5 and 6, respectively.
Washington Results
Tyson Inv
I won't link it, but the men fell to 20 and the women jump a spot to number 2 from 3 last week.
*Feb 6 2020*
No action this weekend as the Razorbacks will not compete until the Tyson and Husky Invitationals, respectively. I'd imagine the split squads will send the distance teams to the long distance friendly Husky track to qualify for Nationals and the sprinters to stay home at one of the fastest tracks in the world for short distances.
Week 2 Rankings. The women stay consistent at number three which I would consider a victory. The men drop to number 19 in their eventual slide out of the rankings before their likely top 15 finish at Nationals.
In other news, Katie Izzo is on the Bowerman watch list.

*Jan 28 2020*
My prediction is they'll hang around 23-30 before indoor nationals and finish in the 8-12 range at Nationals.
The women might take a step back this season as they graduated or lost talent to the pros but Gregory and Viljoen will be an almost unstoppable duo in the mid distances.
It's not impossible to repeat this year but it's going to be an uphill climb. Depending on health, the women could end up in the 1-5 spot at the end of indoors.

Izzo, a junior from Seal Beach, California, is the second-fastest collegiate indoors in the 5000 with her 15:13.09 from December. She has lowered her mile best twice in the last month and is the year’s eighth-fastest at 4:37.47.

Coming off a calendar year sweep its a bit much to expect a repeat from the ladies. I'd love another track title, don't get me wrong, but this might be a reload sort of year.
You know you are a bit spoiled when we will probably finished in the top 3-5 is considered a bit of a downer.
As for the men we are getting some young talent in but I'm not sold on this coaching staff getting the best out of them.

I see y’all going 12-7, objectively.

The more I have been paying attention, the more I realize that Bucknam seems to have a very similar style as far as the distances go as McDonnell. Hear me out...
Bucknam, from what I hear likes to run the shite out of everyone on the team all week. Come meet day in Cross Country for instance, those left standing get top 7. This was McDonnell’s style. It was everyone’s style in the 80-90s and that that style taught a whole generation to fricking burn out on running; that’s a different thread and board.
When you can recruit the whole world, it’s not a bad strategy (throw it all at the wall and see what sticks). We didn’t even get the top distance runner in the state last year (top ten nationally).
Coaching track and cross country has become a strategic stack your events and customize your plans to the runner’s strengths type of business. Change or die. Guess what we’ve decided to do.
Now I could be wrong and my opinion is based on hearsay, but the one thing I’m not wrong about is a need for change. Pick one, strategy or coach. I don’t give a shite one way or another; just win, baby.

Which just... how can you not, as the greatest track team in the history of the sport, land the top distance runner in your own state?
Yes, as you have said, the game has changed. What worked for McDonnell will not work today. I'm not sure that if McDonnell was coaching today what he did then is what he would do now.
Great coaches adapt to the times. Bucknam can't adapt. We know he can't because he's been consistent in where he places, which would be respectable for a program with no history in track and field but is woeful for a program with the history of Arkansas.
Yes, I know it took a long time for Lance Harter to pay dividends for the women's team but there wasn't a sense of we are just treading water. It was taking small steps forward every season.

As always you are Mr. Track for us.

Hunter Woodhall ran the 800 leg of the DMR. Crazy. 1:50, not too shabby. I wonder if he's going to transition to more middle distance.
ETA: He ended up running the fastest 800 in a Razorback uniform this weekend.

Does #2 seem feasible for the women with no sprinters?
Posted on 2/16/20 at 12:07 pm to TheCheshireHog
It does because they are so deep in the distances this year. When you have 2-3 place in the 1500-Mile, 3000, and 5000 plus 2-3 that will place in the vault, you have a very good chance to do well at Nationals where team scores are typically low. It's too bad Werner is red-shirting otherwise I'd tend to have the LadyBacks as a lock to repeat.

The men are doing better than I expected. A trend that I hope continues.

Arkansas qualifier starts tonight. The Razorbacks will split squads again (Wake Forrest is the other meet) as I believe this is the last weekend one can gain entry to Nationals.
Next weekend are the SEC indoors which don't really mean shite other than bragging rights.
As it stands, men have 8 qualifiers (team or event) with 3 on the bubble, and the women have 11 with one on the bubble.
