let's take this moment and reflect on the class of 2012 (courtesy of ESPN):

Signed by then-coach Bobby Petrino, this 24-member class had a whopping 14 busts. There were some nice finds, namely Williams, who became a star running back. Hatcher, Johnson and Philon all became regular starters (Philon left for the 2015 NFL draft). Collins, who has started 27 games and led the Razorbacks in pass breakups the past two seasons, was a diamond in the rough as a two-star recruit. JaMichael Winston, Jeremy Sprinkle and Deatrich Wise Jr. were three-star recruits who emerged as solid contributors.

Secretly because he didn't want to possibly scare off Porter or because he kind of knew we weren't getting Porter I wonder.
Also, 'secretly' because the RB is committed elsewhere, or doesn't want others jumping on him like schools have recently been known to do?

On his positional recruiting update yesterday he said "If Arkansas misses on Porter, they could extend a later offer to one of the few off-the-radar running backs they've been on for the past few months."

We went toe-to-toe with Uga, Bama, LSU, Texas, Michigan, OU, etc. for these kids, and got official vists/made the final cut.

Recruiting is a sales position in the "football team" company. I for one try to avoid paying sales people who just make the final cut or create some interest but rarely close a big sale.

That's cool speculation, but Porter is still a clear step down from the 3 he was talking about and he's even rated below Hammonds. I'm super glad we got Whaley, but to act like this RB class is some testament to our coaches' recruiting abilities is nothing but sunshine pumping. We were extremely extremely close to ending up with Hammonds as our only RB, and he was coming here regardless.
Deny it if you want but the coaches put all their eggs in 3 baskets and Georgia's higher ups are the only reason they didn't get completely burned.

well it's not from a lack of trying. Flying 20,000 Miles To Recruit The Best
it's pretty obvious bert wants to recruit within the rules and doesn't want to blow smoke up a recruits arse. if we bent more rules and blew more smoke we'd probably pull in a few more stars. doubt we ever do either as long as bert is here since he believes in doing things the right way, making a good name for yourself, and being uncommon.
