Why Patrick Surtain and not Brian Branch?

BB had the same number of INTs and 60 more tackles and a sack. What was the thinking? Is it assumed that the opposing teams had to scheme around his half of the field?

Branch was very good but Surtain has become *the* shutdown corner in the NFL.

Well, BB plays safety so he should have a ton more tackles. Also safety blitz is more common than a corner blitz. For a CB, actually having fewer stats is a good thing...that means your guy is never open enough to get thrown to.

Just look at Prime, regarded as one of the best CB's in coverage ever (not that good of a tackler). He only ranks 24th all time in ints because he didnt get thrown on very much.

This is this exact same logic that led to Surtain getting snubbed in Thorpe voting 5 years ago.

Well they play different positions for one. But also you can never look at just raw stats for DBs. If anything the best CBs don’t have the best raw stats.

Branch was playing really well the first half of the year but dropped off some the 2nd half of the year. Meanwhile Surtain was a shutdown CB in every single game. Even a guy like Chase with his triple receiving crown only had a small % of yards in that game coming 1v1 vs Surtain

Defense POY does not discern between corner or safety. Yes, BB had more tackles because he’s a safety, but he had just as many INTs AS A SAFETY did. See how that works? As far a corner goes, Marlon Humphrey had better stats than PS2

Quarterbacks would have had a better QBR throwing the ball straight into the ground than against PS2 that’s the only stat I would need to see to vote him DPOY

That just isn’t true at all.

Can you explain why are you looking at just at raw stats? If player A gets burned for 100 yards, makes 8 tackles, but gets an INT, did he play better than player B that gave up 17 yards and an INT but makes 3 tackles?

INTs AS A SAFETY
And? You realize many of the leaders in INTs every year are safeties?

Do you not think Surtain was worthy of being an All-Pro in 2022? He had just 2 picks. There were plenty of other CBs that year with more INTs and tackles. But clearly it would be idiotic to think they were better than him

At some point stats matter. How do you quantify “he shut down his side of the field”? Or QBs “don’t look in his direction”?

No, it's a well established fact.

Seriously, he's the best cover corner in football since at least prime Revis. This is a silly take.

Man, y’all sure are a sensitive bunch. Please don’t confirm that perception on the big Rant board. He got the award already. Y’all act like I’m making the case for Stingley or something. Lighten up.

Because there are stats besides raw stats. Do you not realize that? Like there are numbers for how many routes and yards receivers have had against Surtain 1 on 1.

And again I ask you, should Surtain have been 1st team All Pro in 2022 because he only had 2 INTs meanwhile there were plenty of CBs with more INTs and tackles. Under your logic he wasn't even a top 15 CB that year.

Targets per route run. These are trackable statistics…

Patrick Surtain is the best corner in the NFL and it ain't even particularly close. He played the best and shut their asses down every time. Much like in 2020 on our defense, people stopped throwing his direction because he had his guy in prison.
