There really is a lot of good candidates out there.. it really comes down to what your looking for. I like cutting edge technology like Tensiomyography or TMG. We do currently use the Catapult System, but could use it more. Jeff Allen is damn good. (Guess which system UGA added last year..lol) I also like high energy guys that motivate and get players spirits up. More of a players coach at that position, someone the players can vent around and let off steam in the weight room.
David Ballou would be a great hire.
I really like Paul Jackson.. he seemed to get the most out of his guys at ole miss. Players coach too..Look at Metcalf and others. He is at USC east now..
Alex Spanos is a young name to watch.. we won’t hire him, but he might be the next big name. He is cutting edge and rising fast. Gaining a lot of respect early and should get a head gig soon.
I really feel young, energetic, up to date on technology and players coach.. Arron checks those boxes. But Saban knows what he is looking for and what he wants. I trust his hire and I’m sure Jeff Allen will kinda have somewhat of a voice in it.
Very good call, Coach Bo!

Happy to have him. A lot of mojo there.

What are your thoughts on him, Cochran leaving and everything going forward Boz?

Cochran was starting to get bad press and pressure. He saw an easy way out and took it. No doubt his 4th Quarter Program was a game changer but things have evolved and he never did. I like Ballou.

Hey Boz! What are you hearing so far during the 4th Quarter Program? Any freshmen already standing out or players in the program already that are impressing?

I listened to the most recent podcast from The Audible, and Bruce Feldman spoke on Cochran leaving. He said he's gotten 2 very different opinions on Cochran, depending on who you ask: former players/coaches or current player/coaches. He said that if you ask former players/coaches about Cochran, they say that he was a vital part of Alabama because he, along with Dr. Whatshisname, played good cop to Saban's bad cop. Feldman said it actually seemed to have kept a number of kids from transferring over the years, and that the overall dynamic really worked in terms of pushing kids but not over the edge.
Then he said that when he spoke to current players/coaches, they said that Cochran's act had worn thin and that his personality or whatever had gotten so big that the dynamic wasn't working anymore, and many were not surprised to see Saban go in a different direction. It was interesting to say the least.

That's very interesting. I hope the best for him and I'm excited about the new direction. Seems like it worked out well for both parties, honestly.

I’d say that is pretty accurate.

I think Cochran’s shtick ran its course and he lost the confidence of the fan base, and more importantly the confidence of our players and staff. Writing was on the wall. He will always be a legend for how he helped us win those titles but the game passed him by. Glad we went a different direction, although I wish he would have gotten his first on the field gig at like Eastern Louisiana Tech or something. He will help UGA with recruiting and team motivation, but I absolutely believe the dudes we are bringing in are going to make us a better squad.

Bruce, Stew, and their guest (an ESPN guy whose name is eluding me) spoke about what Cochran brings to the table for GA, and they agreed that while one can infer that his energy level will make him a good recuiter, it must be said that there's no reference frame whatsoever regarding whether he'll be a good recruiter or a good on-the-field coach, as he's literally done neither. Bruce particularly was adamant was that while you can't say this is a bad hire for GA, you definitely can't say it's a good one. It's unknown by definition. Also, I've listened to a number of podcasts, and no one has indicated that this looks like a plus-value hire for GA. The only ones who spoke about it positively simply said that theoretically, it helps Ga to hurt Alabama, assuming losing Cochran hurts Alabama. I don't personally believe it will, and I couldn't be more excited about our new hires.

Did they delete this tweet?
Edit, I think they originally deleted it and then put it back up.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced the hiring of David Ballou as the Crimson Tide's Director of Sports Performance and Dr. Matt Rhea as the Director of Performance Science on Monday.
"Just as with any other area, we feel that it is imperative that we adopt and integrate advancements in the field of strength and conditioning that will provide elite training, while better protecting our players from injuries and helping them develop and perform at a higher level," Saban said. "Our program has been working toward these type of advancements with the development and construction of our own sports science center, and with the addition of David and Matt, we believe our student-athletes will be better equipped to reach their goals for many years to come."

I could be wrong, but this sure seems like it’s been in the works for awhile.

Including the Jeff Allen quote is also really interesting - not sure I've ever seen him quoted in anything directly from the football program before
quote:
"The collaboration between strength and conditioning, sports medicine and nutrition are absolutely critical for the success of our program," Alabama's Associate AD and Director of Sports Medicine Jeff Allen said. "The addition of Coach Ballou and Dr. Rhea to our program will allow us to take full advantage of our sports science center. The data they will generate on our athletes, through their unique training methods, will allow us to know exactly how to manage our team to ensure we are performing at our best each Saturday and make sure we are doing all we can to prevent injuries."

It’s not just Allen. Keep reading down, Dr. Lyle Cain really got my attention because of who he is and what he said

Yep - at the very least they're definitely selling this as a change in philosophy.
I don't think we'll ever truly know what the plan with Cochran was, how bought in he was to adapting, how able he would have been/was at adapting........but it does look like Saban decided 12-24 months ago it was time to make some changes (including the new center). I have to assume that purely from a S&C point of view he wasn't completely broken up over getting to handpick guys who were at the top of the field in this sort of stuff.
I still think that the biggest risk here is all the other stuff Cochran brought to the table. And we just won't know whether that void is filled or not for a while (maybe not for a decade when we read the "What Really Happened" books).
