I remember when Saban demanded the OC be on the sideline so he could communicate and be connected with the offense. When did that change?..........I was watching Saban's PC today and he indicated the team was tight and needed leadership. The OC or someone needs to be on the sidelines for situations like that. To be there and guide them when they are out of sorts.

In an article from last year:
The entire article is worth a read, but it's also pretty ironic that it contains quotes from BoB back in 2015 when he said he thinks the OC should be on the sideline.

ETA: Maybe we should put Golding in the booth to see if it gives him a better view to call plays.

Saban said before this season he left the decision about where to coach up to O’Brien.
“Bill wanted to be in the press box and he could do it either way, and he’s done it either way,” Saban said during his weekly radio show Sept. 16. “It just balanced the staff out a little better to have Doug and Wig on the sidelines with the players because with their experience, they can make the adjustments. Bill can always make the adjustments with the quarterback.”

Saban believes there are pros and cons to being on the sideline or in the booth, noting that being in the booth allows for fewer distractions and a place to lay out play sheets, while being on the field is effective in having “that impact with the players.”
“It really is up to the individual and the group that you have and how that works best with your team,” he added.

What good is having BoB up in the press box with the play sheets if Bryce is going to change out of that anyway?

Exactly, when we were successful on offense Saturday it looked like our OC was under center to me.

He actually tells a joke where he says after he got the call from Alabama, he went right to his computer and looked up Lane and Sark's offense, and the first link he saw was to a video of Saban screaming at Lane on the sideline... which nudged him towards wanting to be in the box.
