Alabama Rowing Finishes Third at the Big 12 Championships

The Crimson Tide’s Ella Kemna, Blythe Markel, Gianna Rucki and Ashley Sizelove earned All-Big 12 accolades

AUSTIN, Texas – Alabama rowing medaled in three races at Sunday's Big 12 Championships, earning a third-place team finish.

The Crimson Tide took silver in the Second Varsity 4+ and First Varsity Eight+, and bronze in the Second Varsity 8+, earning 73 points towards the third-place result. Alabama has finished inside the top-three in each of the last four years at the Big 12 Championships, three of those being a second-place finish. Four members of the Crimson Tide's 1V8+ crew earned All-Big 12 accolades: Ella Kemna, Blythe Markel, Gianna Rucki and Ashley Sizelove.

Alabama's 3V8+ crew logged a top-five placement in the first race of the day before the 2V4+ boat rowed to a second-place finish (7:24.3). From there, the Tide would finish fourth in the 1V4+ (7:29.0) and third in the 2V8+ (6:36.97) before taking silver in the 1V8+ (6:29.8). All of UA's three podium-finish races included the likes of eventual champion No. 2 Texas, conference affiliate member (RV) Tennessee and (RV) Alabama.

The Crimson Tide now awaits the NCAA Division I Rowing Selection Show on Tuesday, May 16 at 5:30 p.m. CT, with qualifying teams racing in the NCAA Championships May 26-28 in Camden, N.J.

From Head Coach Glenn Putyrae
"We are really proud of all the hard work this team has done this season. While there are some bittersweet feelings that the season is slowly approaching an end, we trust that every crew did the best they could [this weekend] and they are proud of their results. We've closed the gap to Texas in some of the events, but we still have a long way to go to get to where we know we can be. Congratulations to Texas – they are a strong team and we know they will represent our conference well at NCAA's [as the automatic qualifier]."

Alabama’s Derek Maas Earns Brad Davis Community Service Award

Crimson Tide swimmer Derek Maas was named the Southeastern Conference’s Male Brad Davis Community Service Leader of the Year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama swimmer Derek Maas was named the 2022-23 Brad Davis Southeastern Conference Male Community Service Leader of the Year, Commissioner Greg Sankey announced Tuesday.

Maas and Auburn track and field athlete Sara Pacer were chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from SEC universities. Each will receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship, provided by the SEC.

"Sara and Derek epitomize the complete SEC student-athlete experience by their commitment to their communities and their success in competition and in the classroom," said Sankey. "They are tremendous representatives of the many SEC student-athletes across our universities who have a positive impact on their communities. Congratulations to Sara and Derek, their families and the universities they represent."

A 13-time All-American and NCAA Elite 90 Award winner, Maas is the seventh Alabama athlete to earn the overall honor and the first to do so since 2016.

"The impact Derek has made to this program, to his academics and to the community is why he is deserving of this award," said head swimming and diving coach Margo Geer. "He is an example of what hard work and dedication can achieve. His character and compassion for the community has set a standard for our program. I'm very proud of what he has accomplished at Alabama and know he will continue to do great things."

Alabama joins Georgia and South Carolina with a conference-leading seven overall honorees with Tony Johnson (football) and Erin Tenbrunsel (volleyball) winning the inaugural honor in 1996. Additionally, Nichole Lees (soccer, 1998), Andreé Pickens (gymnastics, 2002), Leigh Gilmore (track and field 2012) and Lauren Beers (gymnastics, 2016) have brought the men's and women's Community Service Leader of the Year award home to the Capstone.

The SEC Community Service Post-Graduate Scholarship is named for former Associate Commissioner Brad Davis. Davis succumbed to cancer on March 2, 2006. He had been a member of the SEC staff since 1988, first serving as an assistant commissioner until 1994 when he was promoted to associate commissioner.

On the final day of the NCAA East Prelims, the Alabama track and field women's program advanced five student-athletes, across two events, to the NCAA National Championships.

In Alabama's opening track event of the day, Amari Brown, Milan Fields, Na'Taja Ballard and Amara Obi solidified their place in Austin, Texas, behind a 44.08 performance in the 4x100-meter relay. The quartet join the UA men's contingent, as Alabama successfully advanced both 4x100-meter relay teams to the national meet.

In the very next event on the track, Flomena Asekol punched her ticket to Nationals behind a 4:12.72, fifth-place finish in the 1,500 meters to become the final UA athlete to qualify for the NCAA National Championships.

Eleven of Alabama's 23 student-athletes who qualified to Nationals previously earned podium finishes at the SEC Championships. UA will have representation in 14 events at the National Championships, as four of those will feature multiple Crimson Tide student-athletes. Of the 14 events, Alabama will compete in both male and female versions of the hammer throw, the 10,000 meters and the 4x100-meter relay.

Alabama Adds Associate Head Coach Andrew Hodgson to Staff

Hodgson joins the program with over a decade of elite coaching experience

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama swimming and diving head coach Margo Geer announced the addition of Andrew Hodgson on Tuesday.

Hodgson joins the program with over 10 years of coaching experience, which includes spending the last five seasons at Northwestern as an assistant coach from 2018-20 and an associate head coach from 2020-23. During his time with the Wildcats, Northwestern set a school record in every female event on its way to a total of 26 schools records over four years. Hodgson led the program in student-athlete recruitment and helped facilitate nationally ranked recruiting classes between 2019-23. He also helped coach the Wildcats' women's team to a team-high ranking of No. 16.

Head Coach Margo Geer Said
"We are very excited to welcome Andy and his wife Alison to Tuscaloosa. Andy stood out in our search as someone with great character, enthusiasm and passion for leading others. He is forward thinking in his approach to coaching and recruiting, and he brings great experience at the NCAA and international levels. We are looking forward to sharing the deck with him."

Prior to Northwestern, Hodgson served as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech (2016-18) where he was directly involved in the team's nationally ranked 2017 and 2018 recruiting classes. With the Hookies, he worked with the upper yardage primary group, helping to set 13 program records and mentored 19 All-American swimmers over the course of his tenure.

Hodgson worked his way from an assistant coach with New Trier Swim Club (2011-13) to a head coach (2013-16) with the program, coaching several junior National team members during his tenure. He led the team to a top-10 finish at the NCSA Junior Nationals. He got his start in the field as a student assistant coach for Florida State (2010-11).

Andrew Hodgson Said
"I am ecstatic to be joining Alabama Swimming and Diving. The chance to be immersed in an elite championship culture at one of the most legendary universities in all of sports is something I am thrilled about. I want to thank Margo for providing me with this opportunity and I can't wait to give everything I have for the Crimson Tide. Roll Tide!"

Hodgson graduated with a bachelor's degree in exercise science in 2013 from Florida State before getting a certificate in coaching and leadership from Kellogg School of Management in 2019.

So my best friend swam at vtech. He's laughing at me/us today. Northwestern scored 0 men's points and 17 or fewer women's points. Didn't look through all the diving events to see how many of their 28th place points were non swimming. It's a very ho-hum hire, that is gonna cement our downward trajectory. Appreciate it Greg Byrne

School Record Falls, Alabama Advances to Three Event Finals on Opening Day of National Championships

The Crimson Tide will have representation in the following event finals on Friday night: 400-meter hurdles (Corde Long, Chris Robinson), 200-meter (Tarsis Orogot) and the 4x400-meter relay (Khaleb McRae, Long, Orogot, Robinson)

On the opening day of the NCAA Outdoor National Championships, the Alabama men's track and field program advanced four athletes to three different event finals as the day was highlighted by a school record-breaking performance by Tarsis Orogot in the 200-meter dash.

As the sun started to set on the Mike A. Myers Track & Soccer Stadium, Corde Long and Chris Robinson rolled their way into Friday's event final behind two heat-winning performances in the 400-meter hurdles. Long (49.34) secured the first-place finish after making a spectacular closing sprint down the home stretch in the opening heat of the event. In the third and final heat, Robinson (48.79) clocked the fastest time of the entire preliminary event as he held the lead for the entire race.

In the very next track event, Orogot clocked a sub-20 second time in the 200-meter preliminary dash to not only break Alabama's school record but also solidify his automatic qualifying spot in Friday's event final. The Ugandan ran a blistering 19.94 time to earn a third-place overall finish in the semifinal event.

To close the first day of the national meet, Long, Orogot, Robinson and Khaleb McRae each competed in their second track event of the day when they teamed up in the 4x400-meter relay. The squad recorded a 2:59.24 showing in the preliminary event en route to their opening heat-winning time.

The opening day for Alabama was bookended by a pair of event finals, as Bobby Colantonio Jr. (67.27m | 220-8) closed his legendary, Crimson Tide career in the men's hammer throw where he earned honorable mention All-America status. The last event final of the day came on the track where Victor Kiprop clocked a ninth-place finish in the 10,000-meter run (28:29.28) to receive second team All-America honors.

School Record Falls as Alabama Earns Three Podium Finishes on Second Day of National Championships

The Crimson Tide’s Mercy Chelangat (10,000m), Taylor Gorum (hammer) and Hilda Olemomoi (10,000m) all earned first team All-America honors as Gorum set a new standard in the women’s hammer throw

The second day of the National Championships featured the beginning of the women's action at Mike A. Myers Track & Soccer Stadium. The Alabama track and field women's program saw a school record fall and three student-athletes, across two events, earn podium finishes at the national meet.

In Alabama's opening event of the day, Taylor Gorum earned first team All-America honors after her 66.60-meter attempt (218-6) secured her an eighth-place finish in the hammer throw. Gorum initially broke her own school record on her second attempt, before extending her new mark on her third and final throw to solidify her place in the final round of the event. Teammate Samantha Kunza finished the event as an honorable mention All-American.

With Gorum's record-breaking performance, it's now the second time in as many days that an Alabama school record has fallen while at the national meet. On Wednesday night, Tarsis Orogot set a new standard in the 200 meters after clocking a sub-20 second time in the preliminary event.

The women's program would wrap up its field events with additional All-America honors, highlighted by a second team All-American performance from Chelsea Igberaese in the shot put. Teammate Cherisse Murray would end the event as an honorable mention All-American. Over on the runway, freshman Caelyn Harris earned honorable mention All-American status in the long jump after being the only underclassman competing in the event from the East Region.

Alabama would conclude the second day of the national meet on the track in the 10,000-meter run. For all 25 laps, Mercy Chelangat and Hilda Olemomoi hovered within the top-five threshold before ultimately finishing third and fifth, respectively. The feat marks the second consecutive NCAA Championship where the duo has placed in the top-five, the first being the Indoor Championships back in March. The duo's efforts on Thursday night earned them first team All-America status.

At the end of the first day of the women's competition, Alabama sits tied for fifth place with 11 points.
