Oats had like a month to recruit Watford.
He wasn’t coming here regardless... The point is how big of a fan a recruit is of a school doesn’t mean he will choose that school.

South Carolina has had tons of talent come through the state over the past few years.
That doesn’t stop now.
Blythewood’s Julian Phillips is currently ranked as the No. 1 player in the state and is ranked in the Top-30 incoming junior prospects in the country. Currently standing at 6-foot-7 and weighing in at 180 pounds, Phillips is a coaches' dream and is a major upside prospect.
He leads impressive recruitment, holding offers from Alabama, Arizona State, Clemson, Florida, Kansas, Missouri, Ole Miss, and Texas Tech among others. His most recent offer was extended by Ohio State’s head coach Chris Holtmann who recently completed a zoom call with Phillips.
“Ohio State is the newest program involved.”
Phillips, despite having several schools in the mix, said he hears from the following programs ‘frequently’ and those include Texas Tech, Wake Forest, Kansas, Florida State, Clemson, USC, Alabama, Iowa State, Ole Miss, and Ohio State.
He mentioned some schools and broke them down with Stockrisers.com:
Alabama: “Coach [Oats] has been saying that he really likes my game a lot and that he believes I’d fit right in with the play-style they play with.”
Florida State: “Coach Smith has been saying that he thinks my versatility and length could transition well in the way they play. He told me that he’s been liking my game for a while and that playing under him and Coach Ham [Leonard Hamilton] could really benefit me.”
Then he discussed Clemson and South Carolina, two local programs, and what they’re pitching to the top-rated guy in the state:
“They’ve been saying that there’s no place like home and that putting on for my hometown would be good. And they like my game a lot and that I can impact their programs respectively.”
Phillips says he’s watched a lot of film on Brandon Ingram, Jayson Tatum, and Kevin Durant and best describes himself as a ‘versatile forward that can stretch the floor and play both inside and out’

247 put out a top 50 for 2023 today.
DaJuan Wagner Jr is #1.
Bronny James is #30.
The Bewley twins that we are recruiting are ranked #8 (Matt) and #28 (Ryan).
We are recruiting Curtis Williams Jr - #25 on the list.
We are recruiting John Gamble - #46 on the list.
No player from the state of Alabama made the list.
There may be some others of note on the list, but these were the only names I recognized at first glance.

And I feel old as hell seeing DaJuan Wagner having a kid that is old enough to recruit.

DaJuan Wagner scoring 100 points in a HS game is still amazing.

On January 16, 2001 he scored 100 points against Camden County Tech. He converted 42 of his 61 field goals (with 10 3-pointers) and 6 free throws: he scored 25 points in the first quarter, 21 in the second, 26 in the third and 28 in the fourth. He went on to score 50 or more points 4 more times during the season, and averaged 42.5 points in 29 games played as a senior.

I'm betting Bama. Those point guard comments about auburn were just a smokescreen. He's only had one official visit and it was to Bama 10 days ago.

Even if he commits we still have to worry about the G-League

Wow, I wonder what changed to move up the announcement by four weeks.
Harper seems optimistic on Twitter.

He visited Bama 10 days ago? And I’m pretty sure no official visits are allowed at this point in time.

Going by 247 website, wtf do I know?

Ahh, I see.
That was when he visited on September 20, 2019.
There are no official visits taking place currently. The NCAA recently extended the recruiting restrictions through January 1 if i'm not mistaken.

T Watts nugget:
quote:
Six schools officially remain in play for five-star point guard JD Davison a little over a month away from his Oct. 31 decision. But sources tell BOL the main two teams to watch at this juncture are Alabama and Auburn, with LSU still working on the five-star guard, with sources on the LSU side feeling they’re on the outside looking in at this stage.
One thing that is clear is the Alabama staff is entirely focused on Davison for the lead guard position in this class. So much that the UA staff stopped recruiting Darius Johnson, and it appears to possibly be Davison or bust in this cycle.
Nate Oats has been very hands-on here as well with Tide head skipper making sure Davison knew he was a top priority early and often, and the Tide staff has built a good relationship here.
Four weeks is a long time to go in recruiting, so this could go back in forth, and it’s too early to rule out Auburn who will continue to put on the full-court press.

Thanks
When did he release this info? Just curious since he was referencing the Halloween commitment date.

More TW nuggets:
quote:
Yesterday we had a nugget (posted above) on five-star point guard JD Davison, who many had written off for the Tide early in the process. But the Bama staff is very much in it, with sources indicating Auburn is Alabama's main competition despite the state’s top player only going as far as to narrow his list to six ahead of his Oct. 31 announcement. As mentioned above, Oats hopes to sign an elite class, and is taking a very active approach here as Davison would undoubtedly take the class to that kind of level.
With Holt on board and JD Davison long established as a top priority, here are a few more nuggets on prospects UA has been linked to.
— On the big man side of things, one prospect Alabama has positioned themselves well with is elite center Charles Bediako. The IMG standout hasn't officially narrowed his list beyond 10 at this point but, per sources close to Bediako’s recruitment, the Tide is expected to be among his next cut. Likely aiding UA’s chances here is the fact that Bediako is former teammates with UA freshman Keon Ambrose-Hylton who signed with Bama last November. The Bama staff has some work to do, but right now is in a good position for the 5-star.
— The news isn't as good for Bediako's teammate at IMG, Moussa Diabate. The 5-star big has a long list of schools that includes Alabama, but sources close to his recruitment believe the Tide has some ground to make up to be a legitimate threat. We’ll keep an eye on things here regardless.
— And continuing the 5-star theme of these nuggets, Monteverde Academy product Caleb Houstan is another prospect to keep an eye on. His recruitment is a little bit more wide open, but one source close to Houstan believes the Tide have a legitimate shot here, but it won't be easy battle with UA battling the nation's blue-bloods for his commitment. Programs like Arizona, Duke, and Gonzaga, among others, are joining Bama in the race for the nation’s No. 8 overall player in the class of 2021.
