It’ll be interesting to see how shoe companies react to this. It might force them to identify and sign these guys younger

500,000 is a lot, and with the endorsements a top player can get that's another 500,000, but only the Jalen Green, Anthony Edwards types can get that.

You have to remember that the 30th pick in the NBA draft gets 1.4 million dollars minimum.

It all comes back to which is the better path at being a top pick for a guy that may be the 10th pick, is it college or the G league, we don't know that yet, interested to see how it plays out.

College has shown to be a great path to NBA millions, the G league route is the unknown, it's before this just been for players who weren't good enough to go from college straight to the NBA. As an NBA GM was quoted as saying today, no one wants to be in the G league, not the players, not the coaches.

I just had to read 4 pages of posts going back and forth about what college kids should want between the G League and going to college. Here are my thoughts:

Most of the kids they are offering big money too are guaranteed top 10 picks regardless if they play in college or not. The other kids are borderline and won’t get paid near as much so you’ll see them likely turn it down. If you’re one of the elite prospects, why would you turn down that deal? Don’t get caught up on the “500,000” number for Jalen Green. That’s his base salary. He will get a multi million dollar shoe deal along with endorsements. Anyone who says they’d turn that down to go to college for a year is fooling themselves.

These kids that go to the GLeague don’t have to play in the GLeague. They’ll play exhibition games against a few GLeague teams, NBA Academies, and international teams. They get their 4 year education paid for whenever they decide to go back to get it. They get insurance. They get coaching from former and current NBA coaches for a year to better themselves. All of that AND get paid over a million dollars? It’s the better route. IF you are a bonafide one and done player it is a no brained and will continue to be the case until the NCAA changes something.

The guys that more than likely need more than one year to develop (Burnett, Mobley, etc) then college would be the better route. It would give you a bigger platform to show out. Now there will be fringe guys who will make the jump for the money because of family situation and nobody would doubt them. That’s smart for them. If this happened 3 years ago, Sexton would’ve never made it to Bama.

Totally agree with all of that. This is ultimately only going to result in 10, maybe 15 in a strong year, top players foregoing college every year. And while I'm on the fence about that being a good or bad thing, I do think that the only immediate impact of it will be forcing the handful of programs that 90% of the one and done recruits sign with to reasses their recruiting strategies. Whether they start recruiting more #20-50 overall kind of kids or just try to outbid the G-League is another story.

While going the college route may get recruits noticed more by the general public, that’s not the case for NBA scouts. It’s not like the scouts will forget about a top 10 HS player that went the G-League route. They’ll have way more film on them and access to them than they do with the college kids.

I think he’s gone, but I really don’t know shite I’ve never been a Petty fan, but I do believe we’d be better if he came back.

I feel the same way, I’ve never really cared for the guy. I couldn’t give a shiit if he has success after college like I care/worry about other former Bama guys once they move on. It’s something about him.

However, he does make Bama better.

Petty will always be a favorite of mine due to the changes he made while on campus. I would love to see him return.

That G-league thing has a trickle down effect that will impact us and everyone. As you said, the G league goes after the top 10-15 players. That forces the Dukes and Kentuckys to look more to the #16-50 type player. That's the sweet spot for Nate, so he has to re-assess how many battles he can realistically win against UK regularly, along with Auburn, LSU, etc. So that group has to probably focus on the #51-200 players. And so on down the line.

Not sure why some people dislike Petty so much. Inconsistency has been the only thing that I’ve disliked about him, and while he still has some struggles with it he still shot 44% from 3 last season. Not to mention that his overall game improved a bunch last year. I’d love to have him back.

If ten players go to the g league that would mean the trickle down effect would make Kentucky and Duke start looking at players ranked 10 - 100 instead of 1 - 100, it's not gonna be as big of a deal as people are acting like. I think 10 leaving a year is on the highside, I think it will be 5-10 most years.

I love Petty and hope he comes back. He played his arse off last year and was a good leader. If he does leave I think he will eventually make his way into the NBA, 45% three point shooters don't grow on trees and he has nice size too, improved his rebounding and defense a lot last season.
