I had one of those Pizza Hut basketballs too haha. Loved it.

It wasn’t just transfers that underperformed under Johnson, it was everyone on the team sans Sexton,
You could argue even Collin underperformed until the SECtourney

I love that we have a coach now who isn’t afraid to correct a player when they are doing something wrong or bench them when they aren’t playing hard enough. You’ve gotta have a coach that demands a lot out of his players and pushes them to be the best they can be. I don’t think Avery really demanded much out of them, it was just show up and play. Coaching NBA is a lot different than coaching in college. You actually need to teach in college and show players what you expect and how to do it. It’s not the NBA where the players are already great when you inherit them.
One reason Saban gets such good results is he pushes players to be the best. He walks the walk too he is the first to work and last to leave, leads by example, he may ask you to work hard but he himself works even harder. I think Oats has a lot of those same qualities.

We've never caught a damn break in the NCAA tournament. It's amazing
We did get used to sweet 16s up till then.
That 95 team was good. I'm not 100% but that was Hobbs 2nd or 3rd year.
Still, you could see the decline happening. He was able to pull McDyess... That saved him for a bit.
That team with Faulkner was a decent team. Their only roster loss from the previous season was hollywood Rob.
Wimps last year, he had Sprewell, Horry, Caffey, Robinson...Serious group of talent. Those guys lost to the tar heels in the 2nd round.
But yeah. 1 elite 8? Is it asking too much to try and like, get close to that again? Hopefully we can return to a regular Ncaa team at some point.

Hard to believe we've only been to the NCAA tournament twice in the last 12 years. We have been really bad as a basketball program recently. Unacceptable. I think we are all ready for that to change and hopeful we have a guy who can change it.
If Oats can get to the NCAAT 3 out of 4 years at Buffalo with mostly guys who didn't have many other offers and transfers then surely he should be able to get there at Alabama with better resources and players.

12 years.
It's truly sad.
Alabama was a very prestigious program (basketball wise) for quite some time. As a program we have a richer history in basketball than people acknowledge. That seems to have been forgotten through this drought.

For the first time in a long time, I think we got our guy. Oats has been everywhere, recruiting relentlessly.
And hey, if his 1st year goes south, maybe wimp can spot him some Oxys to get through.

There’s one caveat to that statement: he’s not playing Miami of Ohio and Northern Illinois either. L$U, Auburn, Kentucky, and Tennessee are his competition now. Things are a lot more competitive in the SEC so he’s not going to run roughshod through this league. Here’s my realistic expectations for year 1 of the Oats era:
We WILL be a better team, a much better team. There will be some rough games and moments as the guys adjust to the new ways. November will look a lot different from February. By February, most teams won’t want to see us coming because we’ll be a pain in the arse to play by then. I think we go about .500 in conference play, maybe a game or two above that, like 11-7 and win almost all of our non-con games. We should get an NCAA invite as probably a 8 or 9 seed and we will probably win 1 game there before getting ousted.
As Nate gets more of his style of players on the roster and gets them experience, we are going to be hell on wheels to play. By year 3, we should be battling Big Blue near the top of the league.

I feel like that’s a best case scenario. I’m with you I think we’ll actually see improvement throughout the season (crazy, I know). If we can make the tourney this year, then this year is a success. I just want to see good effort and improvement throughout the season. We haven’t had that in forever.

Making the tournament would greatly improve recruiting opportunities.

One thing I love about having Coach Oats is that we no longer have to look at how many stars a recruit has. Oats has a system and he is going to recruit players that fit it.

and he seems to be a no nonsense kind of guy. AJ was too laid back and kept saying we know what the problem is but I cant figure out how to motivate the guys. That from a HC making almost 3 M was a BS answer.

I understand your point, but don't think too far in that direction. Well coached talent will trump anything else. Oats should be able to recruit the same type of player he wants, but only a better one with a successful year or two at Alabama....Alabama>Buffalo.

Kentucky, Duke, and North Carolina would disagree with that, and they have the hardware to prove it.
It depends on what your ceiling is. If you want 20 wins per season and make the tourney every 4 out of 7 years, then stars don’t matter. If you like to be a champion and be a top 5-7 program in the country, we’ll need to continue to bring in 4-5 Stars.

And why not bring in 5-stars that fit his system instead of 3-stars that fit it. This is ridiculous
Posted on 6/2/19 at 11:36 am to Cobrasize
I'd rather be like Gonzaga, UVA, and Texas Tech, or Bo Ryan's Wisky teams and Jim Belein's Michigan team while we're at it. Five stars (that are prob. bought) is nice but one and done gets tiresome after awhile. Even UK fans are now side eying Cal.
