I wouldn’t blame him for leaving for that job.

Lateral move at best, and he has no recruiting ties up north. I can't see it happening. Cincinnati is not near the national brand that Alabama is.

Cincinnati is currently a better basketball job, it allows him to branch out of the South to prove he can do it, and it’s more money.

Oats is making a million a year here more than Brannen is there. I doubt Pettway would make more there, have you seen that they offered him more?

Even Cronin was making less than Oats is now.

Walsh’s article said it would be more money and better title.

And my original post shouldn’t have said Cincinnati is currently a better basketball job. Their basketball history is so much better than ours and it’s not even close.

They have a better Bball tradition no doubt.

If it is for a better title and and more money I wouldn't blame him for leaving. I hope he stays, he is one of the best recruiters in the country.

Can't see Alabama letting him go without offering to match whatever offer Cinci makes.

I can't see him leaving unless it's for a HC position but who knows, stranger things have happened.

He’d be the top assistant there. It’s a risky move, but one he might have to make to land a decent HC gig somewhere. Would hate to lose his recruiting, but at least he’d be going to a northern school that would less likely be poaching our recruits. Just hope if he does leave it doesn’t affect our 2019 class.

He is on the cusp of getting a HC job as it is, one good year under Oats and another good recruiting class and I think he becomes the HC somewhere.

He's not gonna be an assistant here forever, he is becoming a pretty hot name.

Name him assistant Head Coach here if we have to, we can't let him leave unless it's for a HC job.

Coaching for a year under a proven winner like Oats will help him a lot.

As it would under Brannen, to be fair.

Maybe so, but Oats is more proven and a much bigger name.

Brannen hasn't won an NCAAT game yet nor had a team ranked in the top 15 for a large portion of the season like Oats has.

I just don't see how taking a leap to go with a less proven coach at a place where he has no ties will help him get a HC job faster.

Why would he leave to go to Cincinnati?

Probably has a decent relationship with Brannen from when he was an assistant here and maybe he'll get a bigger title there. My guess is he stays because we'll pay more and he has kids in school here.

I think he takes it. The biggest thing holding Pett back is he’s never done it anywhere but Tuscaloosa. If he wants to further his career, he’s got to show he’s not riding on the reputation of the big script A for everything he’s done. It’s a legitimate concern for ADs taking a look at him. It helps Oats more if he stays but it hurts his personal career aspirations. I’m good with whatever he chooses to do.

Well, that and he's never done much in Tuscaloosa.

Pettway has been the first, third and ninth ranked recruiter in all of college basketball for the past three years per 247Sports and you say he hasn't done anything here?

I mean, what are the indications that he's actually a good coach? He's been here for a decade, we've had poor player development, poor in-game coaching, and have made a total of 2 NCAA tournament appearances. You most likely aren't going to get a lot of promotions just for being a decent recruiter.

Pett is better than just decent as a recruiter to be fair, and perhaps unfortunately, tons of coaches get promotions just for being good recruiters.

He was #10 in 16, #3 in 17, #9 in 18, and #7 in 19 so far.

I have no idea how 247 does their rankings/points, because he's #10 in 2016 with commits from 4* Armond Davis (0.92) and 4* Braxton Key (0.9769).

Right behind him at #11 is Jeff Capel with commits from 5* Harry Giles (0.9996), 5* Frank Jackson (0.9961), and 4* Javin DeLaurier (0.9835).

That isn't an isolated case. There's coaches ranked well behind him that have much better averages every year.
