Remember Shackleford had said he anticipates him being a one and done. Hope not for our sake.

As a huge fan of his, I’d say that’s not likely at all. But if it did happen, we’d be in for an incredible year so I’m for it. He’d either have to prove he can handle being a PG at the next level (and we need another ball-handler) or put up MASSIVE scoring numbers for him to be in a good position with the NBA draft. He just doesn’t have the size they look for in a 2-guard.

It would take a Trae Young type of year for that to happen, wouldn't it?

Probably not that insane. Based off of Nate’s comments, you wouldn’t expect him to be the same kind of liability defensively as Trae, even as a SG. And if he put up the same assist numbers he’d be a PG prospect making his size a positive instead of a negative.

I’d say 18+ PPG would get him a 1st rd selection if he went in as a SG prospect though, which as a recruit ranked outside of the top 100 is unheard of.

I honestly think Shackleford is gonna be our Bryce Brown.

Looks like the Starting 5 is gonna be...

Kira
Beetle
Petty
Reese
Galin.

I’m pretty happy with that.

LINK

And then a 2nd unit of JQ, Shack,Forbes,Herb, and Javian.

Pretty solid IMO

If that’s the case, I’m a little surprised by Herb not being in there. I hope Galin surprises me this year, but seeing him the last couple years makes it hard for me to believe he’s worthy of a starting spot. I’d much rather have Reese shift to the starting 5 and Herb in at the 4.

Part of me thinks Herb’s exclusion from this list is Oats preparing for a world without JQ, seeing as how he sees Herb as a Swiss Army knife rotation player of the 1-4 spots. Does make sense from a rotation standpoint.

If that’s the case , then Oats must think like I do in the big debate we had......Galin got to man the 5 over Reese.

Jk. Hope the 5 that give us the best chance to win get the minutes . First time I have been this pumped for basketball to start in a LONG time

Oats has said for a while now that Reese is going to play mostly the 4 spot, but I’d love to see him at the 5. Oats has praised Smith this off-season so maybe he’s seeing something in practice we haven’t seen on the court. From strictly the fan perspective of what we’ve seen in the past few years, it’s hard to see any justification for Smith over Reese IMO.

I think Reese starting at 4 has a lot to do with Rojas and Gary going down. I think Rojas would have started at the 4 and Reese at 5.

Oats pretty much said Reese and Herb are pretty much our only options at the 4 now. Petty is the 3rd option there now.

I think Galin is bigger and stronger and can provide better defense down low. Also, if/when Reese plays the 5, we're going to be an extremely small team. It will have to be Herb and Petty playing the 4 at that point.

Just having fun but this was the whole basis for my argument . Reese is light years ahead offensively but still need someone to bang/ rebound / defend down low sometimes

Unless Herb is hurt, I see no way he's not starting.

I’m trying to keep my expectations in check. How much did the Avery experiment taint these guys? How easily will they fall back onto bad old habits if it’s a struggle at first? But...

I feel good that at least now there’s a plan and a strategy and the guys know exactly what is expected of them. And if you suck or sulk or dog it on the court, you will find a seat next to coach. I’m excited about the possibilities.

Be patient. A Final Four team is not going to take the floor in November. There will be games and stretches in games where they look lost and terrible and you think WTF. But there will also be nights, probably in January where they look like a million bucks and we’re telling Kentucky to bring it on. The future is bright.

Yes, he has issues defensively, but he rebounded at better rate as a stretch 4 than Smith did last year (both are similarly terrible at it). Smith also provides little to no rim protection. The only edge he’s had in gameplay to date is post defense which isn’t something he’s particularly good at either.

This is all based off of the last couple years so maybe that has changed and Oats can get more out of him. Also to his credit I remember when the previous staff was apparently thinking he had NBA potential in his first preseason.

Hey, I don’t normally post on here, but I do read y’alls posts to stay up to date. I just had a quick question. Will the games this year before SEC play that are on SEC Network + be available to watch even if I don’t pay for ESPN +? I know in the past I could watch them, but the ESPN + this year seemed different.

This is a good question. Normally, I'd say we could watch it, but it seems like they are clamping down on stuff now

Yeah, I’ll pay for it if I need to, but hoping that’s not the case. I’m thinking there’s a difference between ESPN + and SEC Network +, but I don’t know for sure.

I’m pretty sure that’s 2 separate things. SECN+ should be included with a satellite/cable package like normally so you can stream all the games you want. I think ESPN+ is a brand new service that costs and it includes a lot of UFC, small sporting events, behind the scenes shows, and stuff like that.

So pretty much we should still be good. Wouldn’t pay for ESPN+ just yet

I believe Beetle or JQ start instead of Herb. If they throw out Kira/Petty/Herb/Reese/Galin, we’d be down 10 everytime the bench comes in. Who besides Kira scores in that line-up?
