Hard to tell what's going on with Hawkins and it doesn't look good that he can't get on the floor with Davis and Smith playing so badly but Oats and others had hinted that Hawkins wasn't gonna play much this year and would mainly provide depth but has a lot of upside.
This is what he said about him when he signed
So I still have some hope that he can come in next year and be the main big. I still hope we trade one of our bigs in for a Juco or Grad transfer big, just because the ones we have playing right ow clearly aren't cut out for it.
With Rojas and Ambrose that's two more guys that are 6'8.
Oats team last year was at Buffalo was 5th in the country in rebounds per game, so it's definitely something he emphasizes and he keeps bringing it over and over as our main problem.

“Ray gives us a big man that’s skilled in multiple areas and fits our system very well,” Oats said. “He will give us some interior depth and has a huge upside. Ray is a big, strong, physical presence who can handle the ball and play inside-outside. We’ve targeted him since I was at Buffalo, because we felt like he was a great fit.

Last night's game was much anticipated to see if we were actually turning the corner with a new coach.
This is a game we most certainly lost at home in recent seasons.
Average record wise opponent, in Coleman, in February, we're fresh off a big win, so we need to keep the momentum going.
Unfortunately, another disappointing February effort, so this season is depressingly similar to the others.
Fever, I damn sure hope your right, next season being much better. I've heard that line many times before.
I'm with George/Cobra. I gotta see winning on a consistent basis before I put the cart ahead of the horse.

It's not uncommon for a big not to be ready to play when they come in and don't take off til their sophomore or JR year.
One of he best bigs in college last year and this year is John Mooney at ND and he didn't do anything as a freshman, barely played, then didn't do much as a sophomore but took off his jr year.
Here are his yearly stats
LINK
I don't think Hawkins not playing this year means he is a bust, I think he has a lot of upside for next year.
Even Obi Toppin who is Dayton's big and projected to be a top 10 pick redshirted his first year in college and admittedly says he wasn't ready to play as a freshman.

I see some attrition after this season. Expect 2-3 transfers. If they can land Primo who can handle the ball well, Keon Ellis who can handle the ball well, and they’ll probably look at the grad transfer route for an athletic big man. Keon Ambrose can defend multiple positions
Jordan Harper thinks we have 2-3 transfers.

Yea I think it's a bit early to write off a true freshman. I understand the idea that the position needs help, he isn't used he must suck......but as others have said some guys just need a full year of practice, training, weights and workouts to be able to compete in a man's league. Especially big guys.
It's very possible that Hawkins fits that mold. Or he might just be awful. I don't think we can real know until next year when he'll clearly be expected to contribute.

That's fine with me as long as aren't forced to pick up multiple grad transfers who only have 1 year of eligibility left. If we end up having to take a 2nd grad transfer I'd prefer a guy with 2 years left.

I’m fine with that. I want a complete reboot of the program.
What I saw last night, was disgusting.

Yeah we definitely need it, and bring in Primo and a guy with some size who can play right away.
Josh Nebo at TAMU was a transfer. There are always good bigs at smaller programs looking to transfer to a bigger program.

This is a serious question because I have no idea. How did the bigs at Buffalo play? I have no clue about them

The had a really good big the last 4 years that Oats recruited out of HS named Nick Perkins. He is 6'8 250 and shot 38% from three last season.I posted his highlight video in here a while ago saying I hope we can get a big similar to him. Here are his highlights from last year.
Very versatile player.
If you're at work mute this the song in the highlight video has cussing in it for some reason.

That guy looks like he played physical. We lack physicality

I'm not buying into "get rid of these guys because they're uncoachable or spoiled by Avery Johnson" theories.
You'll get players every season coming in that need to be taught to play winning basketball and nothing suggests we just have bad apples. In fact, I feel like we have a much higher share of "good kids" than most (certainly more than some good Bama teams of the past).
We have some glaring weaknesses like quality big and point guard play but we also have enough strengths that we should have at least split our close games so far instead of going 1-7 in them.
It's up to the coach to get them to focus and improve during the season, especially these days where success is determined by how quickly you get Freshman and Sophomore talents to win.
I'm still completely on board with Oats but I can also say that early in the season I could attribute the mistakes that cost us close games to players adjusting. However, these same things killing us in the 26th game of the season needs to be worked out from a coaching standpoint.
I doubt Oats would disagree with that either.

Yeah his whole team at Buffalo played physical, they were known as one of the toughest teams in the country his last couple of years there. They really bought into the whole blue collar/hardhat mentality.
Some of the players he is recruiting here so far seem really tough like Rojas and Ambrose. He is gonna bring in his kind of guys.

Most of our guards are a good fit for this system offensively they just need to buy into the defense and toughness aspect.
Our bigs just don’t fit this system at all.

I agree with this.
Beetle and Petty are by far our toughest player and Beetle can’t get out of his own way at times.
I meant Herb instead of Petty. Not sure what the hell happened in my head

I'd put Herb before Petty in the toughness department, and really it's not that close.

Bottom line is Herb, Petty, Beetle, Kira, Galin, Shack, Davis, Forbes all play hard /try enough to win.
In some cases there's obviously been a huge improvement this year. In Reese's case, he's actually been a major improvement this year in terms of effort but I'm thinking something was wrong personally as he just seemed out of it all night.
The problem, to me, (aside from some talent issues inside) isn't so much effort as it is mental focus and that's also on Oats to get them focused.
We've blown enough wins to have us in the tourney already with simple stuff like Kira taking his eye off a pass and letting it roll by him out of bounds, Reese or Petty choosing to block out the wrong man, Beetle's one man against the world heroic drives, Reese not paying attention to a defender coming to poke the ball away etc etc etc. . .
That's just poor focus more than poor effort.
