Agreed. I just don't see how Kira can hurt his draft stock by coming back one more year after this year. He's not made quite the jump some thought he might. He's got the tools, just needs to get it between the ears better.

So what's ya'll's confidence level that Oats is the coach that will be able to turn our program around and get us on the winning track?
I'm a 10/10, if he can't do it I think we are beyond help.
I hate to say next year we will be good, because I said that last year, and without the injuries we would be really good this year imo. Looking at what we have potentially coming back next year, I am really excited.
I think we need to give Oats 5 years minimum, once he is able to recruit a whole team of the players he wants watch out.

I’m at like an 8.5/10. Still need to see what he can do on the recruiting trail. Dior Johnson was a big target of ours and he committed to Cuse today...

2 struggling teams clashing in Athens, Ga tomorrow.
We've lost 3 straight, which is how we roll in February.
Georgia's lost 5 of 6 & are led by superstar Anthony Edwards, who may be the overall #1 NBA draft pick this summer.
I suspect Edwards will go off in a big way with no Herb there to defend.
As far as thoughts on Coach Oats, I still believe in him & his system. He unfortunately doesn't have key pieces he needs for his style of play.

Recruiting hasn’t been very impressive so far. I’m not in panic mode, but I’m getting a little nervous

Dior Johnson was the number 5 ranked player in his class and is from New York, I always viewed him as a longshot.
I am not worried about recruiting at all, Oats went 56 and 11 his last two years at Buffalo with two stars and former Juco players, 32 and 4 his last year there. They beat some highly ranked p5 programs along the way. He will get good players whether he does it through getting good high school kids or getting good Juco guys and transfers.

We are not pulling five stars from a cross the country, that's reality. Oats knows hitting that sweet spot (50-90) of top 100 is the key to building a program. A five star here or a project there is fine but overloading on either can be fatal. Even UVA and Villanova learned that.

I don't have much faith that we win tomorrow. We should've beaten Tennessee at home by 10+ even without Herb, and I think we would've if not for our bigs getting in foul trouble, but there's no use making excuses, we lost.
The players have to learn to win, they are so used to losing close games they almost will it to happen at this point. Gonna take winning a few games like tomorrow to get the confidence up and start to change the momentum of the program. Once we lost Herb, on top of all the injuries we already had, I knew it was gonna be an uphill climb. Beetle not being 100% is icing on the cake.
I see it pretty much as a terrible luck/learning year, I'm still gonna watch the team and support them but I don't expect a lot going forward this season.

Yeah we missed on basically every top target for the 2020 class but they get a pass since it was the first year. If we start whiffing on the 2021 class, we are in some shite.

I'm going to have a new strategy today and take a mental health day from Alabama basketball. I think I'll plan to go out to dinner towards the end of the first half so I don't have to watch how it all falls apart. Maybe me not watching will be what leads us to winning.

It's easy at this point to just lump our results in with recent history and that's just oversimplification of the state of the program. Nate Oats is an X and O kind of guy. Very innovative in his approach. He believes in both sides of the court and fast and spread out is something that is fun to watch and most deadly when executed and players that fit this scheme are going to be drawn toward it.
The SEC better get us now, cause it's going to get a lot harder going forward.

6 out of 10. They play hard, they run decent plays, I like all of that. He hasn’t recruited worth a shiit though. Only one commit his entire time here besides the Avery recruits he convinced to stick. If we turn in to 3-Star University, we’ll be 12-10 at this point every season, which basically isn’t any different than usual for Bama basketball

10 months man. Yeah, it would've been nice to have the start that Muss and Arky have had on the trail, but it's hardly a knock on Oats this early imo.

Well, convincing Lewis and Petty were 2 good gets. The November signing was about going for broke. As Oat's put it, "we were swinging for the stars." They didn't get the difference maker but ended up with the 4* Toronto kid.
Which brings us to this next recruiting cycle, Beetle is the only guy leaving. Without more attrition one way or the other, not a lot of fireworks coming from the next recruiting cycle.
Of course the availability of three players currently on the roster but unable to participate in sophomore guard Jahvon Quinerly, a former McDonald’s All-American, freshman forward Juwan Gary and junior college transfer James Rojas means we are soon getting an upgrade. The bigger and more immediate question is the availability of Lewis next season. Right now I would say he's enjoying the hardhat he keeps putting on. I personally could see Oats opening a couple of spots this off-season and snag a few more transfers who can handle and shoot the ball. That's still a long way from the "3* U you have in mind.
Coach Oats has said numerous times that the 2021 recruiting cycle was going to be a big deal for this team. Sounds about right.

We've been too down lately, so I'm 100% expecting a win to pull us right back into being emotionally invested.
Petty hits a buzzer beater today.

8/10. Recruiting seems a bit of a concern, but by all accounts, the effort is there.
It's hard for guys to do a complete 180 and have instant success. Especially when you're hit with the fact that two key players are out for the year and your best ball handler is ruled ineligible.
I think he's taking the right steps to change the culture. Instead of having Pony Tail as our S&C coach, we have Mike Snowden.
I'd like to see what he can do with a roster full of his recruits and a much better bench. I think this year's squad has responded well to what Oats wants to do, but they're fatigued.

“Mike was with me at Buffalo and a big reason for our culture change,” Oats said.
“The last two years were the best two years in Buffalo basketball history and I think having him as our strength coach was a big part of that. He’s a guy with a lot of energy, that preaches discipline and that establishes a level of work that’s expected in our program – both on and off the court. He also builds great relationships with the players and is someone who is always there for them. I thought he did an outstanding job with us at Buffalo and I know he’s already been working with our guys and they know he respects them as men and will help them grow as men.”

We aren't counting Quinerly who was a 5 star transfer?
