Something to note is that in the last 2 games we have only attempted 24 and 21 3’s. Oats has said multiple times he wants us around 30-35 attempts per game.

Alabama is far from a finished product in year one under Nate Oats, but the one thing that stands out every time I watch them is just how hard they play. Energy about the team is just night and day from late in the Avery Johnson era. Type of team I love watching.

Alabama falls to Kentucky 76-67 while shooting just 4/19 from three.

Despite opening SEC play 1-2, the improvement Alabama has made since the Penn loss has been remarkable.

It's true.

But it does feel different. One reason is the way we can score. We didn't play well today (and still had a chance), but in his first season (offensively) we're doing things that haven't been done in a long time.

It definitely makes it feel like there's something bigger to come.

Sometimes basketball comes down to just making shots. Kentucky - a 30% 3-point shooting team - makes 60% in this game. Alabama - a 37.1% 3-point team - only makes 19%. And yet, Alabama was in it until the last minute. Excited to see where this team is a month from now.

I did not understand why we kept attacking them in the paint with multiple drives that resulted in blocked shots and wild shots at the basket. We did get some dishes to the big men. It seemed like from the start our MO changed in this game.

They defended the three point line, and the lane was open. UK’s defense was the difference in the game. We missed a few open shots, but almost all of our misses were well contested.

I honestly didn’t feel that they were all that contested other than a few of Petty’s (which were the ones he made) and one of Shackelford’s. We just couldn’t get them to drop with a lot of our misses being in and outs. Even Herb had 2 that went halfway down and out. Now I will say that their defense kept us from shooting as many as we would’ve liked, but the shots we mostly took weren’t that well-defended IMO. Especially in the first half. They left Petty, of all people, more wide open than he’s been in most games this year.

Honestly, if we were judging teams on how they look right now, I’d say Alabama looks like a better team than UK does. They won this game by hitting from distance (and midrange) better than they will all season and us having one of, if not the, worst shooting games of our season.

I think it feels a little different because it is a little different. Both Grant and Avery’s teams over-achieved in year one which excited the fan base. I wouldn’t say that at all about this Oats team. It’s based more off of the energy of the team, the efficiency from deep, and his play style taking precedence over putting up early wins. If we slowed things down early, we definitely could have won or been more competitive in those games we lost early this year. But by doing that this team is playing their best basketball when they need to.

I feel like there were some games in both the CAG and CAJ eras where we tried playing faster, but both coaches flinched when too many mistakes were being made and we went back to the clock melting offenses those eras were known for.

Even though I would love to have won those games, I like that Oats stuck to his guns and continued to enforce his run and gun offense.

I said at the beginning of the season we would have games like this when the shot won't fall and we would get beat. I had no idea we would still hang with UK till the end. That's a testament to this team and the coach.

I also said last week that I think 85 points or so is our threshold where things tilt in favor of Bama winning the game more often than not. We got held in the 60's today. we will seldom win a ball game at that scoring pace and it's amazing we were even in it. It is what it is. Not the first time Big Blue has kicked our arse in Rupp, nor will it be the last. I thought we could possibly steal this one on the road, but not today. Let's move on and get ready for Auburn. One day, it's all going to click and we're going to be somebody's arse we aren't supposed to. Let's hope it's Wednesday.

Because Kentucky was defending the 3-point line. They were giving us the lane and depending on their bigs to defend the rim. Again, a good, true big man would have made a big difference for us today.

we did not even run the offense on a lot of plays. The guy with the ball went straight down the paint. We did not even try and loosen the perimeter up with that. HOw many blocks did we have down in the paint.

This was garbage. Oats lit into the officials after this call.

I am about to eat a little crow here.

A lot of people believe I am a troll, or simply not a fan of Alabama. This isn’t true at all. The truth is, I just don’t see everything with Crimson colored glasses like you all do. I’m rough on people, my teams, etc., because I have higher standards than most.

I’m about winning and championships.

The basketball team signs two 3-stars & one 4-star during a recruiting cycle. You all hoot & holler because you just know these guys were hidden gems, how did the rest of the country not recruit these guys harder?! I insult the program because I know out of every twenty 3-star recruits, 6-7 of them are serviceable, and out of every twenty 5-star recruits, 16-17 are serviceable. Sure, there’s a surprise here and there, but for the most part, math always wins, and the lower rated players end up being Dazon Ingram.

Having said all this, I was wrong about Nate Oats. The guys are playing their asss off, and we have a plan on offense.

You may look back at my posts, but I’ve been saying for years that we need all-around basketball players, not 1-dimensional guys. Alex Reese can shoot, but he gets an F in every other category, he can’t do anything else good. Herb has Defense, but can’t do anything else. Galin can’t do anything.

I want guys that can dribble, drive, pass, and shoot. 4 wings, 1 big.
Kira Lewis, Beetle Bolden, Jaden Shackelford, John Petty, & Jaylen Forbes are great. We’ve got 5 guys who can dribble, drive, pass, and shoot, 5 “Nate Oats” guys. We need 9-10 of these kind of players. Injuries & the NCAA hurt, it would have been nice to have Jahvon Quinerly, James Rojas, and Juwan Gary in the rotation.

Herb & Javian are decent, Galin & Reese are useless.

Oats knows what he’s doing, & I’m guessing Keon Ambrose-Hylton is a dribble, drive, pass, shoot guy too. I believe we can still make the tournament this year, but I am stoked about next season. Oats is going to have 8-9 of HIS guys...

1. Jahvon Quinerly
2. John Petty
3. Jaden Shackelford
4. Jaylen Forbes
5. James Rojas
6. Juwan Gary
7. Keon Ambrose-Hylton
8. MAYBE Kira Lewis
9. 1 more recruit/some grad transfer

I’m excited, when Oats has 8-9 all-around type wing players, we will be as good as anyone in the country.

Hopefully we get Bediako. Pure speculation, but I think Galin probably transfers, so that'll open up another roster spot for a grad transfer.

OT, but Florida is getting pounded against Mizzou on the road. Mississippi State is beating LSU 51-44 in Baton Rouge.
