Whittle hinted that he wasn't currently coaching.

That's a good point. But my goodness do we need to get these coaches on board NOW. Going to be a very uphill battle until we get some help.

Yes losing assistant coaches to a head coaching job is a bad look. That definitely makes sense.

Guess we have a difference of opinion on value of P6 assistant at a program that has won the conference 2 out of the last 3 years vs low D1 head coach. Here’s where our assistants went:

Henry to GA Southern: hasn’t won anything of significance or been to the Tourney since 1992

Hodges to Arkansas St: nothing since 1999

Pettway to Kennesaw St: they just won their conference this year and went to Tourney. Prior to that, 2004.

These aren’t even mid majors. It’s not Buffalo, Dayton, Wichita St, etc.

I don’t know how much their salaries will be, but I can’t imagine they will be much higher then what we could have paid to keep them. When Oats got his extension, my first thought was I hope he fought to get the assistants more. Maybe he did, maybe he didn’t and they thought he was taking too much credit (his press conferences around that time never mentioned anything about assistants…I was listening intently and hoping to hear praise for them.) Maybe the assistants knew next year was going to be a step back and now was the time to jump.

I can’t say for certain on any of this but if you put a few puzzle pieces together, it seems like the assistants and several players were ready to move on regardless of whether the moves were truly significant promotions.

It’s obvious that our recruiting and NIL are behind Arky and probably KY. We landed Brandon because being a legacy and we all know how good of a recruiter Hodges was (see Juwan Howard’s comments about calling Arkansas St after losing 4 recruiting battles), including his connections to Canada. Oats has some significant steps to build this thing to a consistent power that can withstand player and coaching turnover. I think he can and will do it, but it may take longer than 1 year and he may still have some growing to do as a coach when it comes to staff turnover (this is his 1st real test).

Therefore, my expectations for next year are lower than what they were before we lost all the coaches and Bradly/Burnett hit the portal. At this point, I’d take a top 4 finish in SEC, Saturday or Sunday exit in SECT, and top 7 seed in the NCAAT. That would feel like a really successful year following up this one given the turnover. Feel free to disagree, it doesn’t hurt my feelings.

It said the visit was cancelled not postponed so I’d have to assume it has nothing to do with weather. Maybe Pettway was recruiting him and he backed out once Pettway took the job?

So who are we losing from the team for next season:

Coaches:
Hodgson
Pettway
Charlie

Players:

Miller
Clowney
Burnett
Welch
Gurley
Miles
Bradley
Heard
JQ/Bediako/Griffin— Maybe.

Who’s left?
Sears
Pringle

WOW! Which team can survive and thrive with this kind of attrition??

As long as Coach Oats is here...I'm not worried at all.

If we can keep

Quinerly
Sears
Griffen
Cosby Jr
Bediako
Pringle

and then we add

Walton - transfer
Walters
Parker
Dioubete

and 3 more good transfers I think we should be a top 25 team next season at minimum.

Yeah I do disagree. It’s a rarity for an assistant to be hired at a high major school with no prior heading coaching experience. Hell it’s not extremely common for one of the top mid majors to hire an assistant unless that assistant either has a connection to the school or was on staff when the coach left.

They will all be taking pay cuts at their new programs but the point for nearly all of them is to lead their own program. If they’re successful, in a few years they’ll have the opportunity to jump to a better mid major program and then if they find success at the 2nd stop, high major doors might finally open.

Plenty of examples of assistants getting mid major or high major jobs. Exhibit A, 2 of the true blue bloods just did it in the past 2 years…literally the best basketball programs in the country.

They did have connections to the program and you could argue Oats wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon, but plenty of assistants stay a long time at a program and then get the head job. Think SDSU is another example of that; he was the assistant for several years before getting the head job.

Edit: Buffalo has hired an assistant coach literally the last 4 times they’ve hired a coach including their current coach who was a Villanova assistant for 6 years (stopped looking after Hurley, who was a RI assistant).

Literally none of our guys wanted to wait any longer. There may be something more to that…and there may not be.

Let's just say his visit to Indiana went really well and he's decided to not look elsewhere now.

Did you miss the first part of my post where I said it’s a rarity unless you had a prior connection to the school or were on staff when the coach left? IE UNC and Duke are that exact criteria…

Nope, gave you credit for that by talking about Oats not leaving anytime soon. But I bet it’s an even more rarity to see guys take pay cuts to switch jobs unless there is more to the story. It has always been that way for our football team, and I haven’t seen a big trend in the basketball industry to suggest it would be otherwise.

Edit: and 3 guys taking pay cuts (again, not sure if that’s the case) from the same team in the same year certainly could indicate more than just “they got a head coaching job.” Maybe they were worried the off court stuff would hinder them in the future or limit the level of program that may consider them.
