Oh yea for sure. But I thought I read that if we get Gurley someone else has to leave also
If I read it wrong my bad

The question is if the "extra" year for seniors is based on their academic year or their athletic year. And if the that extra year applies to redshirt junior transfers.
At this point I don't think anybody knows for sure. But if it does apply for redshirt junior transfers, then nobody would have to leave to make room for Gurley.

Texas Tech transfer Nimari Burnett announced his commitment to Alabama on Thursday.
He broke down his commitment with ZAGSBLOG.
“I chose Alabama because it prepares me for ultimately the level I want to play at,” he said. “The main reason is because the playing style fits who I am as a player on both ends of the floor and I’ve had a great relationship with Coach [Nate] Oats and staff since they started to recruit me.”
The former McDonald’s All-American chose Alabama over Auburn, Illinois, LSU, Oregon, USC, and Vanderbilt.
“I just feel like it’s the best place for me to showcase all that I’ve been working on throughout my life and it’s a system that fits who I am as a basketball player,” Burnett said. “Also, I will bring a high offensive skillset and a defensive mindset that will lead to a successful season.”
Burnett only played in 12 games this season for Texas Tech where he averaged 5.3 points on 28% shooting and 1.8 rebounds.
ESPN ranked Burnett No. 22 nationally and No. 4 shooting guard in high school.
Alabama is continuing to get terrific pieces for next year’s roster. Alabama landed four-star center Charles Bediako on Tuesday.
The Crimson Tide are expected to be a Final Four candidate next season after falling to UCLA in the Sweet 16 this year.

The playing style has a huge affect on the kids. We got a great system and kids want to play in it! I don't know if we get Gurley or not but when you look at our 4 and 5 positional group we lack experience. Frentchie is GOOD but he is RAW! KAH is very skilled but he is RAW in some areas. Bediako is good defensively but RAW offensively. Wilson has only played organized basketball for about 2 years now I think but he is RAW as well so everybody I've mentioned are very very TALENTED but they are RAW and INEXPERIENCED. Gary and Gurley (Maybe) would be the only one with EXPERIENCE. I understand what the staff is doing here.

I still honestly do not understand what on Earth got him to go to TTU. Literally nothing that kid has ever said to a reporter about his desired style of play would lead anyone to believe that a Chris Beard team would appeal to him. He could have saved himself a lot of headache and frustration by just coming here in the first place.

this may be a dumb question but here goes. rather than have 2 guys leave to get burnette and gurley, can they not just redshirt. or does that still count against the scholy totals? what about blueshirt or grayshirt?

This is college basketball. Freshmen rarely redshirt, much less upperclassmen.
But no, redshirting isn’t an option- they would still count.
Gurley has two years of eligibility according to the man himself

At this point I don't think anybody knows for sure. But if it does apply for redshirt junior transfers, then nobody would have to leave to make room for Gurley.
I dug around and found this article quoting an NCAA spokesperson indicating that 2020-21 seniors who've redshirted or who transfer will count toward the 2021-22 total (13) limit:
NCAA grants all basketball players extra year of eligibility (San Diego Union-Tribune)
quote:
An NCAA spokesperson told the Union-Tribune on Wednesday night that “the additional eligibility is only at the current school” but clarified that Thursday morning.
“The eligibility is available at another school,” the spokesperson said in a subsequent email, “but the scholarship will count against team limits. If a (2020-21 senior) student-athlete stays at their current school but has exhausted eligibility (i.e., didn't redshirt), their aid doesn’t count against team limits.”
In other words, if you have 13 basketball players on scholarship and three seniors stay for their extra year, you still get three additional scholarships for 2021-22. If a senior transfers to another school for that extra season, he or she counts against the allotted scholarship limit (which is 13 for men’s basketball).
So, it appears that both Rojas and Gurley will be counters toward 2021-22 limits. That means Rojas will probably transfer out to make room for Burnett and someone else would need to depart to open up another counter spot for Gurley.

Rojas is the only guy I wouldn't mind seeing go. This level of competition is just too much for him and he's got zero developmental potential. I do not like the idea of replacing KAH or Miles with Gurley. Sacrificing long term roster continuity for what isn't even guaranteed to be a short term gain just doesn't seem like a wise move to me. We are already looking at losing a lot next year as it is.

Does Koolaid count against the number being a football scholly player?
If not, get Gurley a Tennis scholly ASAP!

I really don’t want to lose Miles but I don’t see KAH leaving and potentially messing up the Canadian pipeline. I will say that the coaches have seen Miles/KAH every day for a year now so they’ve probably got a good feel on their future potential compared to what they’ve seen playing against / on tape from Gurley. Also, if he’s got 2 years left of athletic eligibility, I don’t think it messes up roster continuity at all.

Multi-sport athletes with a football scholly count toward football limits. Players on athletic aid in any other sport will count toward football limits if/when they play in a football game. Players on athletic aid in any other sport except football will count toward basketball limits if/when they play in a basketball game. (Edited to clarify)

I do expect miles might be the second guy out. Where is he going to play this year with the large group we have coming back.
Those that worry that we are trading the future for next year, remember the portal will still be there. While I may not like it, it appears to be here to stay which means there will be plenty of options available every year.

Only because of the COVID year. He'd be a sixth year player in 2022-2023. What's the actual likelihood that he'd use it? Pretty low I'd think.

Well I am on record as against it bc maybe it was just the year we had and the team played hard, tough and together all year so I kinda got attached to them all and their potential . However , at the end of the day , it doesn’t matter what any of us think/want it is up to CNO and I trust his judgement

Yo I might cry if we lose Miles. Other than Keon Ellis he is the one on the team I am the biggest Stan for
