Yes - Kessens. Super long, was supposed to be a shooter. Definitely not built for Grant's 1987 NBA grind them down system.

I'm just glad we have moved on from that era. I think Grant had a clear vision for what he wanted the team to be, but he also had no clue how to actually build that kind of team and maintain it long term. Thus the random assortment of players that never seemed to mesh well together and terrible roster management decisions.

Yep - the best thing about Oats, to me, is that he has both a clear vision of what he wants to see on the floor and is very good at identifying players (both high school and portal) that fit into the different aspects of that system.

His areas of growth are all "young guy at big program for the 1st time" stuff.

Except for the timeout usage. But I'm pretty confident at this point that all Alabama coaches in sports where timeouts are in a thing have clauses in their contracts that convert unused timeouts into bonuses. It's the only thing that explains why Oats and Saban avoid using them like the plague.

shite Bohanan's inability to make bullpen moves in a timely manner could easily be added in here as the baseball version, too.

Just asking the board:

Have we been able pinpoint the reasons for our team's end of season collapse?
I tend to put this on coaching, but I don't see Oats as not having his finger on the pulse of the team.

It wasn't really an end of season collapse in my opinion. We didn't play that much different the last 4 games than we did the 6 before it. They just had some really glaring weaknesses that at times blew up and at times they were able to work past.

I think the raw materials are there to not have those same issues this year (length at guard, defensive ability, athleticism). The question is whether we fixed the focus issue, and only time will tell.

Not enough guys who hated to lose and would respond to being down by 10 by playing with their hair on fire. The general vibe of last year's team was "if we win that's cool, but if we lose we're not losing sleep over it." I don't think that was true for all of them, but it was true for enough of them to affect the entire team. If they got on a roll they could hang with anyone, but when they struggled there was just never any real sense of urgency.

We also had two matador defenders in the backcourt, which kneecapped our defense all season.

And then add the lack of maturity to the fire, and we had some issues. Chemistry wasn't right witht he team last year.

Yep - agreed

It seems like that is fixed, but we really won't know until they play actual games

I think it was a multitude of reasons. Poor leadership on the court both by players and staff, no defensive buy in but also no defensive talent, and we shot like shite nearly every game from mid December on. What could go wrong did go wrong and we didn’t have a calling card we could fall back on. In year 2 no matter how rough the offense looked, we were going to play great defense which gave us a solid chance of winning each game. Last year we were beyond awful defensively so our poor shooting compounded the problem of having a good chance of winning.

Honestly, with how poorly we shot all year long, how bad our defense was and not showing up stuff...........it's miraculous we managed a #6 seed.

We had one of the best offenses in the country last year despite being an atrocious 3pt shooting team and committing 15-20 turnovers in damn near every game. Yet somehow the conclusion many of our fans arrived at was that the offense is a gimmick and doesn't work.

Considering everything that could go wrong last year did and we still managed a 6-seed, it just makes me feel better about the future of the program under Oats. I'm very excited to see what happens on the court this year with almost all guys that Oats brought in.

I’d have to assume we’ll have another exhibition game before the actual season starts right?

I assume we will do what we’ve been doing the past few years and have one high major scrimmage and then one public exhibition against a D2 school.

I mean we had GT and ULL as our public scrimmages, and then Georgia Tech in private last year.

Ill be curious what we try to do this year for opponents especially considering the foreign trip will be under our belt

It’ll probably depend on if they can come up with a charity event. That’s the only way I think we can play another d1 team in a public event for an exhibition.

Hypothetical -
(Regular Season Scenario)

Would you rather lose to Duke and an entire orphanage find loving homes that day?

or

We beat them by 30 in Cameron while coach k and the kids watch in person?
