Well, that just sucks

Oats said in his press conference a few days ago that he didn't want other teams to be able to scout us just yet, sounded like that was why the games weren't gonna be streamed.

Makes me think they must be making a tweak or two to our system. More midrange shots maybe? Miller hit a few midranges in the scrimmage.

Millers little one legged runner from 8-9 feet was an eye raiser

Freddie Dilione showed up during the scrimmage
Came across this note afterwards from Dilione:
quote:
“I’m loving Bama. They talked about a lot of great stuff and the whole staff is good. There’s no downside to Alabama, there’s a lot of great stuff here.”
“Nate Oats is a great coach and they just have a lot of history here. I’m going to continue the process but from what I’ve seen so far from the facilities, people here, and style of play, it really fits me. They’re great people, so most definitely an option.”
“I also met Nick Saban - that was crazy, he’s a great guy to talk to.”

Yeah, looked like either Oats was allowing it, or the guys just decided to do it, but it was a noticeable change.
Although somebody (can't remember who) did a one-step-over-the-three-point-line shot that I'm sure was strongly discouraged afterwards.

It's practice, so they're probably getting an idea of who is successful from where on the court. If Miller is so dialed in from 6-15 feet that he can make half of them or better, Oats isn't going to tell him to stop shooting them.
It's not that mid-range shots are inherently bad. It's that they're inefficient for all but the most skilled players in the world.

This year team is more focused than last year. Lot of chemistry and you could tell in intra-squad scrimmage. I think they will do well this year.

Appreciate the summary and observations above.

Don't know how much has been said about Miller, but he was the best player on the court by a wide margin. Cold-as-ice shooter from three and mid-range.
I'm assuming by "cold" from 3 and mid-range you mean he shot well (i.e. he was hot/on fire)? Is this like an IcyHot situation?

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I got the Auburn game set to record and I’m excited to watch their game today.
I’m fricking jealous their game is on TV

I'm sure Oats is tired of addressing these types of questions. He's said many times that he doesn't prohibit midrange attempts but rather encourages attempts at the rim and from beyond the arc. Quinerly cooks my grits when he does the subtle jabs mentioning the amount of midrange attempts from a certain player in the NBA. For many of those guys, they're so skilled that a midrange attempts is like a layup for many others.
Anyone mentioning Chris Paul hitting a bunch of midrange pullups as proof that the analytic approach doesn't work, doesn't understand the analytic approach. It's literally based off of statistics. If a player can hit 50+% of there midrange shots, no true analytic guy is going to frown on that.

The question I've always had with this type of analytic logic is that the opponent can effectively cut down on the amount of floor that they must actively guard.
If they actively defend the 3-point line, then the paint and baseline running out from both sides of the paint for about 8 feet, that should effectively take care of defensing Bama's set offense.
If the Tide can hit enough mid-range shots to make the defense have to address it, then it should open up the type game that Oats wants them to run.

Not necessarily. If we’re running a 5 out, or even 4 out 1 in set with guards who can penetrate the lane the weak side has to make a decision to either cut off the free layup, or give up an open three.
Having a mid range threat would give us a huge advantage against the zone though. Very encouraging to see Miller can be one.
In the tournament we’ll be a nightmare if we’re not piss poor on defense, or shooting ourselves in the foot with consistent turnovers.

Which player(s) have we had the last 3 seasons who is capable of making enough mid-range shots to give a defense headaches? You have to actually make a few them to start influencing the defense. If you brick the first 5 you attempt and then make the 6th your opponents aren't going to suddenly think "oh shite we need to defend this shot that they are making 16% of the time!"

Good post, I'm tired of hearing about this complaint as well. It's not like Oats is going to bench Miller if he's hot from midrange. If you can make them at a consistent clip, then you're going to have the greenlight. Problem last year, our shooting just wasn't great. I think we'll see a significant improvement this season.

100% and I might start calling him IcyHot now

I don't think it will stick but I think you should try it.
Did he finish that dunk by the way?

IDK about that one — looks like it was at practice (not the scrimmage).
But I can say that a former Alabama basketball player who has seen him practice used the word "Dominique."
