A couple of BOL "insider" posters say we're getting Burnett. One of them also said we can take Gurley too without losing KAH or Miles, but he didn't explain how. That's partly why I think Gurley might be a non-counter for 2021-22.

If Gurley is a non-counter, he's an obvious take. That would be pretty incredible.

Indeed. But I could be wrong about him being a non-counter.

Yeah, looks like he took a redshirt his first season and was a RS junior this past season.

Do you have to officially declare that you've taken a redshirt or can you wait til what would be your 5th year and at that time make it official?

In short, could he be deemed a senior even though he technically he could be seen as a RS Junior?

If they add him with Myreon Jones and get Castleton back, the Gators have to be pretty happy with that.

I'm pretty sure Mike White could coach the 96 Bulls onto the bubble, so it'd be a bittersweet feeling to me if I were a Florida fan.

Gurley told us that the Hokies are among a long list of schools to have reached out to him with Tech, like "most" schools who have reached out to him, having extended him a scholarship offer.

Gurley did say around mid week that he has had virtual meetings with Xavier, Auburn, Florida, and Vanderbilt while he is working to add in virtual meetings with Virginia Tech, Alabama, Texas A&M, and more.

Here's a look at our most current list of schools that have shown interest in him, "most" of whom have offered him according to Gurley and Stockrisers' Jake Weingarten. This list may have grown since earlier this week.

ACC: Virginia Tech, Duke, Miami, Virginia, Wake Forest
AAC: Tulsa
Big East: Marquette, St John's, Xavier
Big 10: Illinois, Maryland
Big 12: TCU
Conference USA: Marshall, Western Kentucky
Mountain West: Nevada, San Diego State
SEC: Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt

Looks like he will count against the limit.

Pretty sure the school would've had to make it official back when he redshirted or they would've been over the scholarship limit that year.

Furman transfer Noah Gurley is narrowing in on a decision

When Furman junior Noah Gurley put his name in the transfer portal, a lot of coaches acted quickly. Last season, the 6-foot-8, 210-pound forward averaged 15.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 48.8-percent from the field and knocking down 1.5 threes per game.

“I like to get into the paint to score," Gurley said. "I can pass to open teammates as well as take an open three, make an open three. I play defense, I play hard. I don’t think I play like any one player, I try to take different aspects from different players, like Paul George, Giannis (Antetokounmpo) and put it to my game.”

Gurley announced his final eight schools and that he will be committing on Sunday, April 11.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Auburn: “I like that they play in the open court with a lot of open space. They play fast and with a lot of energy.”

Florida: “I’m very familiar with head coach Mike White’s program. Him and Furman head coach Bob Richey are good friends.”

San Diego State: “They have built a winning a winning culture and I feel I would fit well into their system. Also, they’re out West.”

Alabama: “I’ve played against them twice while at Furman, so I have a familiarity with them and their program.”

Duke: “The opportunity to play for coach Mike Krzyzewski and to learn from him would be incredible.”

Tennessee: “I fit in well with their player types, the guys they’ve had. I like the energy their crowd brings in their arena.”

Marquette: “My godmother lives in Milwaukee, and I have been a huge fan of new head coach Shaka Smart for a while.”

Miami: “I mean, it’s “The U.” Also, the opportunity to play for a coach like Jim Larranaga.”

*****
GURLEY ON HIS DECISION

Gurley wanted to make it clear what he is looking for in a school.

“I want to play for a winning program who will give me the opportunity to continue developing,” he said.

Redshirting a player doesn't prevent him from counting toward the total counters limit.

Redshirts count against scholarship limits. I don't think there's any sort of official paperwork or anything either. Everyone just starts out with a presumption of 5 to play 4 and if they fall below the requisite number of games to count as one of the 4 the redshirt is automatically applied. Medical redshirts are the ones that have to be applied for.

If they're basing the free COVID year on academic standing rather than athletic eligibility he'd still be a non-counter though. I thought it was based on athletic eligibility though.

If we get both, that's fantastic.

NCAA approves blanket waiver for 2020 fall sports athletes to retain year of eligibility

Well then the question is was he considered a senior this year if he redshirted in 17-18. With the NCAA my hunch is no, because it would allow a player who otherwise has eligibility remaining to be a non-counter. I think that rule was intended to allow a guy like Reese to come back for another season when he would not have otherwise been able to. I'd have to see the language of the actual rule change though.

2020-21 is Gurley's 4th academic-year (senior) as a total counter on a basketball scholarship. He redshirted to gain a 5th year of eligibility and the NCAA gave everyone an extra year.

I've searched for but haven't found the actual language of the rule. Every article I've read claims the rule says 2020 seniors won't count toward the 2021-22 total limit.

Unless all returning 2020 academic seniors are non-counters, we'll need at least 5 more football players to transfer out.

I don't think Gurley fits that because he was listed as junior everywhere i've looked.

Gurley is a 2020-21 redshirt-junior/academic-senior. Tbh, I haven't been able to ascertain if 2020 academic seniors who've redshirted have to be counted toward 2021's total limit. I can't find a copy of the rule itself. That applies to 6 of our current football players. If they count it'll put us 5 over the 85 limit. We'll see.
