Nate Oats updates status of Alabama basketball's roster as practice begins

Alabama basketball should finally be able to see a healthy Alex Tchikou on the court this fall. During a Wednesday Zoom call with reporters, Nate Oats provided an update on the redshirt freshman forward, stating that he’s “almost back to 100 percent” from an Achilles injury that forced him to miss his first season on campus.

“He’s able to participate in most of the drills,” Oats said, “he’s just not back to where he’s in shape to do everything, but he’s getting there.”

Tchikou, a native of Paris, France, came to the Crimson Tide from Dream City Christian School in Glendale, Ariz. The 6-foot-11, 205-pounder was rated as the No. 36 overall player and No. 6 power forward in the 2020 class.

Oats also said that sophomore Keon Ambrose-Hylton suffered a minor knee injury Tuesday, but stated the 6-foot-8, 205 pound forward is day-to-day and isn’t expected to miss any games.

Texas Tech transfer guard Nimari Burnett is out for the year after suffering a season-ending knee injury last month. Senior forward James Rojas will miss the beginning of the season after tearing his ACL in June but is expected to return to the team by SEC play.

Alabama is still at 13 scholarship players as none of its seniors from last season’s team applied for an extra year of eligibility due to COVID-19. The Tide returns its two leading scorers from last year in guards Jaden Shackelford (14.0 points per game) and Jahvon Quinerly (12.9 points per game) as well as senior wing Keon Ellis, who served as one of the biggest defensive weapons off the bench.

The injuries to Burnett and Rojas should also open up more playing time for other returning role players such as redshirt sophomore Juwan Gary and sophomore Darius Miles.

“Juwan obviously played in the rotation last year, I think eight minutes a game,” Oats said. “He was an energy guy, also a guy who played hard. I think his biggest area of improvement he needed to make was in shooting the ball to get more minutes. He is shooting the ball much better, he’s put a lot of time into it. I hope he can make a jump similar to what Herb [Jones] made going into Herb’s senior year. … His role should increase. It will increase if he continues to play the way he’s been playing.

“Darius had to get a lot more consistent, had to get stronger. He’s gotten stronger. His consistency’s starting to come around. The great day of practice is starting to become great days in a row. We’ve just got to continue to get consistency, his turnovers got to come down. But his playmaking ability, his athleticism, his shot-making, it’s all there. He’s got all the tools, he’s just got to put it together on a consistent basis from day-to-day.”

Along with Burnett, Alabama welcomed in four other additions this offseason, including Furman graduate-transfer forward Noah Gurley as well as three freshmen in five-star guard JD Davison, four-star center Charles Bediako and four-star guard Jusaun Holt.

Thursday, Oats provided an update on each of his three incoming freshmen.

On Davison: He’s been better than what I thought in a lot of areas. His passing ability, you saw some in AAU, but with his high school team he had to score it so much, you didn’t see how great of a passer he is. He can really pass the ball, I mean he’s leading the team in assists in these first five practices.”

On Bediako: “He’s something like we haven’t had since I’ve been here. He’s a shot-blocker, a rim-protector. You know, he puts a lot of pressure on the rim, rolling out on pick and rolls, sprinting the floor in transition. He doesn’t miss much around the rim. His finishing percentage around the rim is high. His rebounding numbers are high, and he can really block shots. When guys try to challenge him at the rim, it looks a lot more like trying to challenge an SEC big than maybe what we had in the past.”

On Holt: Jusaun Holt’s really starting to shoot the ball better. It seems like he’s a lot more comfortable in the offense. His energy’s good. He’s been rebounding the ball at a high clip.”

Alabama began practice last week and will hold a charity exhibition on Oct. 24 against Louisiana before opening up its season against Louisiana Tech on Nov. 9.

Nate Oats: Alabama’s non-conference schedule might be ‘a little too much’

The high-profile additions to Alabama’s non-conference men’s basketball schedule trickled in over the summer, but when the full slate was released August 31, the breadth of its difficulty was clear.

“I don’t know, that might have been a little too much to bite off, to be honest with you,” Oats said Wednesday as the Tide ended its first week of full practices.

Alabama will face three of the Final Four teams from last season in Gonzaga (Dec. 4 in Seattle), Houston (Dec. 11 in Tuscaloosa) and Baylor (Jan. 29 in Tuscaloosa). It also will meet high-major opponents in Memphis, Colorado State and possibly Kansas in the final game of a Thanksgiving weekend tournament in Orlando.

“We’re never gonna schedule light,” Oats said. “I would rather get exposed in the non-conference. Figure out what we’ve got to fix.”

Oats noted Alabama lost three of its eight non-conference games last season before going 16-2 in conference play and winning the SEC.

“You need a wake-up call at some point,” Oats said. “It’s better to get the wake-up call in non-conference than it is to get it in SEC play.”

Alabama opened practice last Thursday and is scheduled to hold a closed scrimmage against Georgia Tech on Oct. 16.

For the first time since 2019, the school will hold its “Tide Tipoff” event at 7:30 p.m. CT on Oct. 22 inside Foster Auditorium for the first time. Capacity will be limited with first-come, first-served seating and a video screen outside for fans who cannot make it inside.

“Our marketing folks talked to our basketball staffs and decided they wanted to go to Foster this year,” athletics director Greg Byrne said during a Tuesday interview with Crimson Tide Sports Network. “I said that’s a great idea, let’s give it a try. I think it will be a little more student-focused because of that.”

Alabama will then host Louisiana in a charity exhibition Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. CT inside Coleman Coliseum. The game will not air on radio or television but ticket proceeds will benefit the United Way of West Alabama.

The regular season begins Nov. 9 against Louisiana Tech, kicking off a stretch of four games in 11 days in Coleman Coliseum before the Tide travels to the ESPN Events Invitational in Orlando.

“Some people think we’re foolish to even be playing [Louisiana Tech],” Oats said Wednesday. “They’ve got some really good players and picked to be at the top of their league [Conference USA], if not picked to win it.”

Alabama will return to Birmingham for a Dec. 21 game against Colorado State, which Oats expects to be a top-15 team nationally, in the renovated Legacy Arena.

“We don’t have many easy games, if any at all,” Oats said. “I think that was by design, but I also want to be playing our best basketball come March. I think if you got cupcake city in November and December, you don’t get exposed and you don’t get your weaknesses figured out, and you don’t better yourself like you need to do in the non-conference to get ready to play conference games.”

Nate Oats plans on playing Quinerly, Davison together 'a lot'

The Alabama men’s basketball team wrapped up its first week of practice ahead of the 2021-22 season, and head coach Nate Oats has been impressed with the Crimson Tide freshmen.

Most notably freshman point guard JD Davison, a 5-star recruit out of Letohatchee, Ala., and a McDonald’s All-American. Even after averaging 32.4 points, 10.9 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game at Calhoun High School, the newcomer has exceeded his coach’s expectations.

“He’s been better than what I thought in a lot of areas,” Oats said of Davison on Wednesday. “His passing ability, which you saw some in AAU, but with his high school team, he had to score it so much, you didn’t see how great of a passer he is – he can really pass the ball. He’s leading the team in assists through these first five practices. He’s playing really well.”

Davison gives Alabama true true point guards for the 2021-22 campaign, as Jahvon Quinerly is back for another season. Quinerly led the Tide in three-point shooting percentage (43.3 percent, 52-of-120) and was second in scoring (12.9 ppg), assists (3.2 apg) and field goals made (142). He was also named the SEC Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after helping lead Alabama to the men’s basketball program’s first SEC Tournament championship since 1991.

Most would assume Quinerly would take over the first-team point guard duties with players like Herbert Jones, Joshua Primo and John Petty moving on after last season, and he most likely will. But that’s not to say Quinerly and Davison, two former 5-star point guards, won’t be on the court at the same time. Oats has plans to utilize both players’ skills at the same time.

“I plan on playing them together a lot,” Oats said. “Shoot, I started three point guards at Buffalo at times. I don’t really care, if they can pass, dribble and shoot, we’re gonna put them on the floor together. Both those guys can pass, dribble and shoot it at a really high level. JD’s really been showing how well he passes the ball. Quinerly obviously showed how well he passed the ball last year. JD’s getting better shooting it. Quinerly’s shooting it at a high level.

“They both have things they’re stronger at. JD’s a little bigger, stronger, more athletic. Quinerly’s obviously got a ton of experience playing in big games. His handle’s really tight, he can get wherever he wants on the floor. Yeah, I anticipate playing those two together a lot. I mean, shoot, to have two creators on the floor together like that, it’s gonna make it easy for everybody that’s on the floor with them, including each other.”

Emoni Bates does not have the wingspan or leaping ability that I thought he would have.

First game is in less than five weeks, so i'll probably fire it up at some point before the end of the weekend. Should start seeing a lot more practice reports and season preview articles once we are less than a month before the season starts.

All recruiting related info will still be posted in this thread and everything else relative to Alabama basketball should go in the new thread.

Some of that has to be wrong. 6'9" with a 6'7" wingspan, 8 inch hands, and a 24.5" vertical? Those are the measurements you'd expect from the dude on the 2A rural highschool team whose only real basketball skill is "tall".

If Bediako can do even half of those things this year, he’ll be a huge asset. All he needs to do is get rebounds and putbacks.

I wish the reporters asked more about Noah Gurley and how he's doing so far in practice.

Also, would it kill anyone to do some practice footage?

I'm mad that the exhibition isn't on SECN+ or something. Hell, i'd watch it on Periscope if I could.
