I don't think Texas is a great Bball job, they have unreal expectations. They fired Rick Barnes.

Shaka Smart who is a pretty good coach couldn't win there.

I do know Oats could win there, but if he doesn't make an elite eight in his first 3 or 4 years they may fire him anyway.

After a quick glance on a Texas board, they wanna call Jay Wright, Kelvin Sampson, Musselman, Dennis Gates, and Calipari

I agree. Great picks. Nobody else should be considered

Not saying he wouldn't go to Texas, I have never seen a coach turn down a shitload of money. Would be interesting to see if we would match it.

Oats is due for a raise anyway, he isn't in the top 20 highest paid CBB coaches currently and he definitely deserves to be.

Calipari, Rick Barnes, Musselman, Pearl, Buzz Williams are all in the top 12 in salaries. Beard was 5th at 5.25 million a year. Oats currently makes 3.2 million a year.

I think as long as Oats feels he can win at the highest level here, he's not going anywhere outside of maybe a couple of true blue blood schools, or the NBA.

Yeah, I do take him as a guy that loves the spotlight and I think he probably would leave us for a Duke or UNC and wouldn't blame him. If he ever gets to the point that one of them offers him that'd probably mean he won at least one NC here.

I'd be worried about Mich St since he has Izzo/mich state ties.

Scott Drew would be the best hire Texas could make imo. Just like with the Beard hire it makes one of your rivals weaker and Drew has a very good resume and Baylor probably couldn't match Texas’ offer.

He doesn’t have any ties. He used to coach HS basketball in Detroit, and that’s about it.

He went to a lot of coaching clinics and camps at mich st when he coached Hs in Michigan, Izzo was one of his references when he got this job.

It seemed no coincidence then that the most influential recommendation Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne received before hiring Oats came from one of Saban’s close friends — Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo.

quote:

“If I could get up there to a practice during the year when we were on an off day and they were on, I’d go to game day shoot arounds, walk-throughs in hotels, when they’re on the road,” Oats said. “As much as they would let me be involved in, that’s how much I was involved at Michigan State. I had that much respect for what Tom Izzo did. I never worked for him, but he was great to me. And he speaks really highly of coach Saban….They’ve got a lot of tie-ins, but the program’s still one of the ones I emulate, with just how hard he gets them to play and stuff like that.”

quote:

And years later Izzo praised Oats. According to Byrne, Izzo told him that Oats “had great energy, and he’s a grinder.”

So what, plenty of high school coaches help run camps at major universities. I wouldn’t say they have “ties” there.

Coaches Texas should consider to replace Chris Beard

In the fallout of Chris Beard’s December 12th arrest for assault on a family member, the University of Texas has decided to move on from the second-year head coach.

Currently ranked No. 6 in the AP top 25, the Longhorns likely have their most complete and dangerous team since the 2008 group that made it all the way to the Elite Eight. Headlined by their backcourt of Marcus Carr and Tyrese Hunter, this team still has a chance to compete for a Big 12 Title, Final Four and possibly even a National Championship if interim coach Rodney Terry — who was instrumental in the assembly of this team — can keep them locked in and focused despite the current chaos.

Texas is going to have some time to identify viable targets and determine what is best for them. Surely, finding a coach that could keep five-star signees Ron Holland and AJ Johnson would be a huge bonus, but that shouldn’t be what matters most. Barring something else unforeseen, the Texas opening is likely going to be the most desired during the 2023 coaching carousel and it should be treated as such.

For any name that comes up to be the next head man in Austin, there will be questions. Why would they leave their current job? Can they recruit well enough to keep the top Texas kids home? Is their style going to play to the fanbase? Do they have enough experience? The questions are understandable and should be getting asked.

Time will tell us who athletic director Chris Del Conte and his selection committee choose to pursue. But to start things off, here’s a list of eight coaches who are worth looking into.

quote:

NATE OATS, ALABAMA

Another big name that is likely to get floated around is Nate Oats. Now in year four at Alabama, he’s got a lot going for him and is another candidate who may be tough to sell given what he’s currently got going in Tuscaloosa. He already reached a Sweet Sixteen in 2021 and this year’s team is looking like a legitimate Final Four contender. Also, he’s not having much trouble recruiting high end talent and does have a near 10 million dollar buyout after this season.

Oats is still pretty young at 48-years-old and he’s a proven winner. He took Buffalo to the NCAA Tournament in three of his four years as the head coach there and has the Crimson Tide on track to make their third straight tournament appearance. He runs a free-flowing, fast-paced and wide-open system that is appealing to both fans and recruits. He’s already seen three players get drafted by the NBA and has a likely top 10 pick on his hands in current freshman Brandon Miller.

Since 2020, Oats has been able recruit four 247Sports five-stars to Alabama along with seven four-stars to go along with them. He’s also been able to gain some traction in the state of Texas, landing current freshman Rylan Griffen who was a top 50 prospect in high school.

Barring an unforeseen change, Oats is going to be a hot name for any big opening that comes up over the next few years. So Texas should be reaching out.

Its time for us to shite or get off the pot regarding bball. Oats needs a a 1 million a year raise at least and we need to have a real plan to build the arena by the end of the season or things could get interesting.

I think we will give him a raise after this season no question, he has earned it. If we get an arena or not os a different story.

Didn't Jay Wright retire because he wanted nothing to do with NIL? And they think that dude is going to go to Texas?

I don't think anyone on that list is realistic. Musselman and Calipari arent leaving, they arent gonna hire dennis gates. Wrights not coming back. Sampson is old and has it made where he is, doubt he would want to out up with BS from Texas’ boosters.

I agree on all of them besides Cal. I think a divorce from Kentucky is something both sides of that marriage may be wanting at this point.
