Connecticut and head coach Dan Hurley have started out the season incredibly hot, going 6-0 to start the year, including a huge 83-59 win over Oregon to start the tournament (1/9)
quote:
Their other five wins, however, have come against teams that are currently ranked 198th in KenPom or higher, including two wins against bottom 20 teams. The Huskies are talented, but they have not been truly tested yet this season. (2/9)
quote:
The Huskies are led by two transfers in their backcourt in ECU transfer Tristan Newton and VT transfer Naheim Alleyne, who have both started 6 games and provide real backcourt length at 6'4" and 6'5". Newton is a near-40% shooter, while Alleyne plays solid D on the wing (3/9)
quote:
The frontcourt for UConn consists of 6'5" breakout wing Jordan Hawkins, who has started the last four games after injury, along with 6'8" freshman Alex Karaban and 6'9" Adama Sanogo. Sanogo is considered one of the top rebounders in the Big East, while Karaban can shoot (4/9)
quote:
UConn has a deep bench unit, with 7'2" freshman Donovan Clingan, 6'3" grad transfer Joey Calcaterra, 6'6" junior Andre Jackson and 6'2" Texas A&M transfer Hassan Diarra being the major pieces. All of those options provide solid rotation options in different ways for UConn (5/9)
quote:
UConn has shown really good offensive numbers this season in both two and three-point shooting, being in the top 50 in both categories. They are also going to be the team that matches our pace of any team we've played so far (119th in tempo) (6/9)
quote:
Defensively, UConn has a defensive free throw rate of 41.9% (313th in the country), so a major key for Alabama will be to try and draw fouls going to the rim and affecting the depth that UConn has through getting them into foul trouble. (7/9)
quote:
I think this game will be yet another dogfight for Alabama against a good team that has tons of experience and talent. This will be UConn's first challenge against a top-50 KenPom opponent, so it will be interesting to see how they respond to that. (8/9)
quote:
In the end, I trust Alabama to win close games against good teams. This one could be incredibly tight down the stretch, but I'm going to give the slight edge to Alabama in this one.
Prediction: Alabama 81, UConn 79
(9/9)

These are the teams I like to face. Give me them coming in with no experience of what a competitive team looks like.
Well, Michigan State fans said the same thing about us, this time yesterday.

quote:Totally agree. I'm afraid that Alabama's gonna be dealing with that throughout most tourneys in the North and West...we aren't liked much out there.
The amount of over-the-back calls we received versus the blatant shoving for position MSU was doing all game had me hot. We're probably not the rebounding team we have been, but we were getting hosed by the whistle on rebounds.
Also that blocking call late on Bediako was the worst call I've ever seen. He had his feet set for seconds waiting for the shoulder shove, which this time was combo'd with arm extension. The POS then proceeded to stomp on Bediako's ankle.

Michigan State fans on Twitter, including their reporter for The Athletic, are saying the only thing dirty about that play was Bediako trying to tear Kohler's ACL. Saying Kohler wasn't stepping on Chuck's ankle to hurt him, it was because Kohler's shoelace was caught under Chuck's shoe. My goodness.

I felt like you could literally see JQ gaining confidence as the night went on. First half, he was a little timid, but by the end of the game he was knocking down a three and then a nifty layup, going inside and drawing fouls, and playing some pretty good defense. I’m happy for him and I think last year was frustrating but only because we were asking him to do too much. He should thrive in this offense where he can be a major contributor but doesn’t have to be “the guy,” more like the year before last.
He's our best lane-driving guard by far, shoots a nice 3-ball, and is, by far, our best passer/assist guy. His maturity/experience will help a ton, too.

The only line I have seen has us favored by 1 point.

The only knock on him is all the turnovers. He had a couple of bad ones last night and reminded me how last year's team gave it away constantly. 2022 Bama looks night and day better in that regard.

Bamarep fell asleeep with about 8 minutes left. Glad to see JQ settle in. I didn't like how the offensive scheme regressed in the first part of the game with him at point.
It looked too much like last year where some just drove right down the floor and took an off balance jumper or jacked up a three with no one there to rebound.

Part of that is just the give and take of JQ. Sometimes you get instant offense and a one man 7-0 run. Sometimes you get back to back turnovers. He's just a really aggressive, all gas no brakes kind of player. Leaning on him a lot last year made the bad side of the deal a lot more prevalent. I think he will look a lot more like the guy from two years ago once he gets his legs back under him. He can comfortably be the 2nd or 3rd option on this team. I'm starting to think his ACL may have only been partially torn or something.

I see no line on the Bama game tonight yet.
Interestingly, it’s a pretty tight line.

Should be a slug fest of a game, two legit top 10 teams imo.

I could’ve missed something but I went through Bama’s old basketball schedules. This is the first time we’ve won the opening game of an 8 team tourney since the 2011-2012 season. That’s so sad

I'd love to say I can understand that chart.
But I have no idea what any of those numbers mean.
Other than games played

3PA per 100 possessions with percentile.
And then 3PFG% with percentile.

I’ll have a heart attack if it’s a one possession game. Basketball season kills me, one close game at a time. Literally.

I think Uconn will have to shoot as hot as they did last night to keep it close and thats a pretty big IF, last night was their best shooting performance of the season.

I went back and watched a few UConn games and I was really impressed with UNC Wilmington out of all the teams they played.
Oregon was a mess like they ran a zone defense and they was horrible at it. Their transition defense was just terrible. I think Dana knew they couldn't defend them one on one with the personnel he had.
It comes down to DEFENSE & REBOUNDING.
I think we can defend them man to man with the length and athleticism we have.
I'm looking for Rylan Griffin to put on a show this game as well as Mark Sears.
