HEAD COACH NATE OATS POSTGAME COMMENTS
"I just want to address the great crowd. I thought the student section was great. So, I just want to make sure we thank them. We'll have to see if the team can come out and play some better basketball for them. I thought (Clemson's) physicality bothered us on both ends, on their offensive end I thought that they [went inside] and hurt us in the first half. So our big's need to do a better job. Our guards couldn't get downhill and they were very physical on our drives just couldn't really get in the paint to trade much. I think we were 12-for-32 from two on the night, which we've been one of the number one offense's in the country. So, I think a lot of it is being able to get to and finish at the rim. They did not have a lot of real rim protection, but they just didn't let you really get to the rim. They did a great job and we finished 10-of-24 at the rim so we didn't handle their physicality well. We aren't getting downhill and creating help, threes end up being tougher threes, and we didn't shoot well from three. We just got to do a lot better job. I thought defensively we were good. Offense struggled, defense kept us in the game then offense came alive in the second half. I think we had three straight threes and went on a little run. Went up seven, they called a timeout and we don't have enough defensive drive to get stops. We have to get better on defense so we know what we have to do. Show some pride on the defensive end and we got to do a better job as a program."

I see the same things with the crowd as others(according to Nate it was good) but if I'm not there then I'm not going to talk shite. Golden rule.
If you guys want a better crowd then go show up and do something about it.
Sorry but whining over the crowd constantly when you guys are at home is whack.
It was 830 on a Tuesday night following the holidays. Relax folks.
Also it's always going to be empty on most weekday games when you play in Coleman. It has too many seats.

You know it's bad when people are thinking RJ Johnson is the answer to what we're missing.

I want them to succeed but this team looks like they're going to struggle to get to the tournament right now. I can squint and see an angle for them to take their OOC lumps then improve in conference play but I'm squinting real hard.

Perfect summary of the game. Our defense was very good in the first half, but that was probably the worst half of offense that we will see all year. The offense was a lot better in the second, but from the moment we went up by 7 until the end of the game was the worst defense we've played all season.
Our bigs, especially Pringle, were less aggressive with the hedging for some odd reason which allowed their guards to get hot coming off of screens, like we've seen virtually every game this season. I have to think after the obvious difference in hedging in the 1st half vs the 2nd half, that we may have some significant issues with our bigs defensively. It wouldn't make sense for us to change up the defensive game plan in the 2nd half when it worked so well in the first. Maybe our bigs have a conditioning issue? Against teams with a bully-ball 4 and 5, it really affects our lineup options, because Stevenson becomes virtually unplayable like we saw last night. I do think going forward, Pringle needs to see less minutes until he pulls his head out of his arse defensively. He's been a complete liability there all season.

Was waiting to see this, but Shot Quality had us winning 90-70. Confirms that Clemson was hitting tough shots and we weren't hitting open threes and layups. Defense has to get better and we gave up defensively in that quick run from up 7 to down 10, but we have had a pretty unlucky streak of opposing guards hitting tough shots.

We have no interior presence thus far this season.
That was the difference in last night's game.
Way to many 2nd & 3rd chances for Clemson.
You've got to get those defensive rebounds.
Otherwise, we're toast against physical type teams.

Sometimes bad defense can allow the confidence to hit bad shots...I bet this will happen a lot this season until defensive effort improves.

With 12:46 left in the second half, we were leading 53-46.
Hall then scored seven points in a row against Pringle and Godfrey had three against Stevenson. And Girard scored three points against Nelson.
So the opposing team scored 13 points in a row and we scored 0 points, making it 53-59.

We were on pace to hold them to 68 points with 12:46 to go and they outscored that pace by 17 in those remaining minutes. Oof.

We got up 7 and kinda let the foot off the gas and allowed them to go on a run and we could never get it back

And we DO NOT call timeout. In fact, our first timeout came at the 4:37 mark. Absolutely baffling to me why CNO refuses to do this to stop a run like 99% of coaches.

It's hard to comprehend how much Bediako and Clowney are missed. You need a rim protector and Bediako was very much that. Clowney was long and could hit the three. This team might be ok. Who knows. When you only have 3 returning guys, it is going to take 1/2 the season at least to figure it all out. They still could be dangerous if they make the tournament.

My one criticism of Nate Oats. He loves saving timeouts for down the stretch, but in some situations, like the run last night, it can bite us in the arse. Having said that, we have been pretty great down the stretch of games in his tenure, so maybe saving the timeouts is his secret sauce that makes it work.

Between Bediako, Clowney and Miller, we had 3 legit rim protectors on the floor at once. I think that in particular is what made us so much of a pain in the arse to beat last year. Other teams would have to get hot from deep and pray that we were having an off-night defensively.

Kris Parker tweeted "Soon" on Twitter. I think the redshirt might have just been burned. I've been curious as to why Parker was the one they were considering red-shirting when I've mostly heard of him having great defensive potential in practice. Kind of makes me wonder if Oats is a little surprised by the poor defensive start and is realizing we could use him on that end.

We currently have 9 players in the rotation.
Sears, Estrada, Nelson, Griffen, Wrightsell, Stevenson, Pringle, Walters, Wague
And on the bench are Cosby and Dioubate.
Parker’s Position is F-G.
So whose time will Parker get?

Not sure, but if they are going to burn the redshirt, I think it would signal him getting real PT. My guess of the guys in the rotation would be Walters, even though I'd hate to see him get buried on the depth chart. Walters has a lot of potential, but hasn't shown himself to be ready defensively.
All conjecture at this point though. The tweet could also mean nothing.
