In the long drought of the Alabama Football offseason, the A-Day spring scrimmage game is a bit of a refresher for both fans and players. Here is a list of players I am most excited to see at A-Day.

Spring is officially here as the Alabama football team delves into the thick of spring practice. Spring in Tuscaloosa means the A-Day scrimmage is quickly approaching. The 2019 season will feature many prominent players with plenty of experience, the likes of those debuting their refreshed talents on April 13th, 2019 in the A-Day scrimmage.
Dylan Moses

With Mack Wilson moving on to the NFL, it will be Dylan Moses’ time to shine in the upcoming season. A-Day game will be his first opportunity to demonstrate his seniority in leading the defense. In recent interviews, he has stressed his preparedness to become the leader on the field, no longer the “puppy” in the room following the big dogs. I am hopeful that Moses will rise to the occasion and join the likes of CJ Mosley, Reggie Ragland, and Rueben Foster to become the next great Alabama linebacker.

Evan Neal

A 5-star recruit out of the IMG Academy in Florida, Evan Neal has already made an impression in spring practice. At 6’7” 360 lbs, Neal certainly has the potential to see playing time this season. With offensive line veterans Ross Pierschbacher and Jonah Williams going to the league, the offensive line will need both depth and experience. While Neal may not earn a starting position this year, I anticipate he will earn a spot in the rotation as needed earning valuable experience for the future.

Tua Tagovailoa

Tua Tagovailoa enters his Junior season with the Tide under the third new offensive coordinator this season. While such changes cause an adjustment period, Tagovailoa seems to be embracing the change with Sarkisian. I am very interested to see how Sarkisian’s new style offense highlights Tua’s strengths in the passing game. Reports have touted Tua’s work ethic this offseason claiming he is practicing as though his job is up for grabs. Watching Tua work his magic with the elite wide receiver corps against our rejuvenated secondary in the A-Day scrimmage should be nothing short of exciting.

Trevon Diggs

After leaving early in the 2018 season with an injury, the secondary lacked depth and experience the remainder of the season. Several young players had to work into the rotation to allow the seasoned players rest during games. This lack of experience hurt the 2018 defense significantly. However, Diggs announced he would forgo the draft and return for his senior season shortly after the National Championship loss, much to the delight of Alabama football fans everywhere. His skill set and experience will be a huge benefit for the Tide next season.

Xavier McKinney

This is the player I am most looking forward to seeing next season. I believe he could prove to be the true leader of the secondary at the safety position. He began to emerge in that role by the end of the 2018 season. Several interviews have shown that he is embracing that position as well with Saban praising the Spring he has had so far. The Alabama football secondary should be a strong point for the upcoming season.

LINK ]AL.COM - Alabama tries a few new things after scrimmage struggles Posted Apr 4, 9:56 AM Michael Casagrande is an Alabama beat writer for the Alabama Media Group. Follow him on Twitter @ByCasagrande or on Facebook.
quote:

The first exam is complete and now Alabama players are cramming for the next one.

That week between spring scrimmages can be a tough one, especially for the new guys stepping into this enhanced reality of playing at Alabama. It can also be a wakeup call after a suspect performance in the first test.

Nick Saban had some concerns about a few positional groups following last Saturday’s scrimmage. There were depth concerns at places like the defensive line and middle linebacker.

After practicing Monday and Wednesday, Saban said they moved a few players around in those roles after seeing better performances.

“I think that’s helped us some,” Saban said Wednesday. “We got a lot of young players there, and that’s kind of what I was referring to that I think those guys have been a little more consistent this week in practice. It’s just part of their development to get a little more confidence in what they’re doing first scrimmage.”

Saban didn’t specify who was shifted around or who might see more action in the second of three scrimmages Saturday in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

“Maybe next time they don’t have as much anxiety,” Saban said, “they can stay a little more focused and try to do things the way that we had taught to do them rather than just trying to survive. So, I think we made some improvement in that area this week.”

Saban also dove into the whole dynamic of how you teach things in this moment. He went back to his time as a Cleveland Browns assistant under Bill Belichick when he was scolded for trying to coach too much. The message from up top was to let the players just play at times.

They will figure things out and sometimes you just need to get out of the way.

Saban also got visual explaining some of the method behind spring football.

“Look,” he said, “I'm a whole part whole teacher. I think it's like taking a bucket of whatever you want to call it, I don't want to call it what I call it, and throwing it against the wall and see what sticks. Put what falls down in the bucket and throw it up there again. If you do it enough times, it all sticks. I know you think I'm crazy, but that's how we've always done it. It seems like it works a little bit.”

Zooming out to take the bigger picture look, Saban said practice overall this week was a mixed bag.

He liked what he saw Monday coming off the first simulated game but there was somewhat of a step back Wednesday.

“Every now and then, as a coach you feel like people get the 'Poor mes,'” Saban said. “If you know what the 'Poor mes' are, they're exactly what I said. 'Poor me, my leg hurts. Poor me, my shoulder hurts. Poor me, it's hot out here today. Poor me, I don't feel like practicing. To me, I'm not big on the Poor mes. I like people not to do what they feel like doing but to choose to do what they need to do to get better and that has been very, very good all spring. Today, it could have been better.”

Alabama practices again Friday before the second spring scrimmage Saturday afternoon. Three practices remain after Saturday with the annual A-Day game wrapping things up April 13.

Alabama Football: After practice Nick Saban made a strong point

quote:

...But Nick Saban does not view youth as an excuse. Not for a player or for a team. On Wednesday, Nick said,

we’re going to get younger before we get older

Saban was referring to the 12 freshmen who will enroll this summer. It is obvious he is looking to some in that group to step up and fill the holes he sees in roster depth. He commented that nine of the 12 are defenders. Nick pretty much tipped his hand that one of the 12, running back Trey Sanders, will have a chance to contribute despite his summer arrival.

It bears repeating, when all the players arrive, more than half of the scholarship roster will be first and second-year players. That much youth does not often describe a national championship contender. But then, despite last season’s failure, Alabama football is a program built to overcome all obstacles..

2019 should be another good year for The King but 2020 could be another 2010 type year unless these newcomers getting ready to contribute for 2020. Losing 8 early to the NFL this cycle and another 8 after this season is going to sting. (plus a new QB).

LINK ]3 Reasons Why Tua Tagovailoa Will Be Slept On in 2019 Stephen Smith of Touchdown Alabama Magazine 19:20

Touchdown Alabama Magazine
Premiered Mar 18, 2019

He had a very good sophomore year; however, Tua Tagovailoa returns to Alabama for his second season as the starting quarterback and he still has something to prove. After all the individual accolades he won last season, the native Hawaiian may possibly be the most slept on/overlooked signal caller in college football next season. Stephen Smith of Touchdown Alabama Magazine dives into the explanation of why that is and talks on why it's a good thing for Alabama football.

Play of new first-team safety has Nick Saban ‘very encouraged’ By Matt Zenitz | mzenitz@al.com
quote:

It may be brother versus brother when Alabama faces Mississippi State this season.

While his younger brother competes for the starting quarterback job in Starkville, Jared Mayden is off to a good start this spring in Tuscaloosa as he tries to win the starting safety job next to Xavier McKinney.

After serving as the Crimson Tide’s sixth defensive back the final nine games of last season, the senior has gotten most of the first-team reps this spring at the safety spot previously occupied by Deionte Thompson, including during the team’s first spring scrimmage last Saturday.

“Jared has really done a nice job for us,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said. “He really showed up well in the scrimmage. He's played really well. Did a good job of tackling. Played with more toughness in the game. He's been pretty consistent. I think he has a pretty good understanding of what is expected of him. I've been very encouraged with his progress and very happy with his performance so far.”

Play of new first-team safety has Nick Saban ‘very encouraged’...Continued... By Matt Zenitz | mzenitz@al.com
quote:

...One of Alabama’s fastest players, the 6-foot, 200-pound Mayden was timed in the 4.4s in the 40-yard dash during the Tide’s junior pro day in March.

After initially playing cornerback at Alabama, Mayden moved to safety last year and moved into that sixth defensive back role in October after the Tide lost Trevon Diggs to a season-ending injury.

Now, he’s in position to be an even bigger part of the defense as a senior.

While fellow senior Shyheim Carter also got some first-team reps at that safety spot during the scrimmage last weekend, word is that Carter was primarily the sixth defensive back and that Mayden got most of those first-team reps at that safety spot.

“He’s done a great job in communicating and doing his job and making sure he’s in the right place at the right time,” McKinney said of Mayden. “He’s doing a great job and I’m trying to keep him, just like he’s trying to keep me, at that top level so we can get better as the year goes on.”

Mayden posted 14 tackles, a sack and two pass breakups in those nine games after taking over as the sixth DB last year. He’s still looking for that first career interception, though.

Maybe he’ll get it versus his brother.

“He’s an older guy, so he already knows how things work around here,” McKinney said. “He knows the plays. So there’s not really much you can’t do with him. He knows everything. He’s just out there just playing ball.”

meaning that he should stay away from the Purple Drank

Would love to see Moses take control this year and then choose to stay for his senior year and really show how he has total control of the D... be that leader the D has been missing.

As I remember it, McClain could do a lot more than only tell people where to line up.

Today marks the first full day of the Coaches Clinic there in T'town. The BEST DAMN CLINIC I HAVE EVER BEEN TO I MIGHT ADD!!! Coach Saban and his staff are the BEST!!!!
Anyway, expect 1200-1500 HS coaches to be patrolling the sidelines at today's practice before tomorrow's 2nd scrimmage. Part of the perks for attending besides hearing the GOAT and many others, you get to watch the practice and watch the closed scrimmage as well, and you get fed like kings!!!!!

A few VIPs at Alabama football practice, other notes Today 4:36 PM
By Michael Casagrande | mcasagrande@al.com

quote:

The Alabama football practice fields were extra crowded Friday afternoon with the annual coaching clinic in town. A few hundred high school coaches were there to view the workout on a warm spring afternoon in Tuscaloosa.

Here’s a quick rundown of observations in the shorter-than-normal media viewing period:

-- Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio was on the sideline watching the action. He was among the coaches who were speaking at the clinic. The former Nick Saban assistant at Michigan State met Alabama twice in bowl games, losing the 2011 Capital One Bowl 49-7 and the 2015 Cotton Bowl, 38-9.

-- There was also a film crew from the Cleveland Browns capturing footage. New head coach and former Alabama player Freddie Kitchens is also appearing at the clinic. Other coaches in town include the Detroit Lions’ Matt Patricia, Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm, New England Patriots special teams coordinator Joe Judge and Dr. Kevin Elko.

-- Also spotted watching the action was Alabama secretary of state John Merrill.

-- On the field, linebacker Terrell Lewis was in a black jersey watching the action from the side. Saban said he would be limited throughout spring practice recovering from his knee injury.

-- It also looked like cornerback Trevon Diggs had a heavy tape wrap on his upper right leg but he was in a crimson full-contact jersey.

-- This was a lighter practice before Saturday’s scrimmage. Players were in helmets and shoulder pads instead of the full gear.
